Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Political pull will get you nowhere with a jury and that was a vastly different scenario. That cop was found guilty (for using excessive force) because he took a much smaller suspect, picked him up, and slammed him headfirst into a concrete floor. The shoplifting suspect was thrown into the floor so hard that he broke bones and fractured his skull. This was confirmed by several witnesses who saw the incident. The cop claimed he slipped, but the jury didn't believe him and convicted him after several days of deliberation of involuntary manslaughter. The verdict was affirmed upon appeal. The cop (now ex-cop), btw, had a long history of excessive force incidents.

^Have you ever taken a look at the success rate of second round NBA draft picks? You can catch lighting in a bottle every blue moon, but the vast majority never amount to anything. Odds are that Deng will score more points in half the season here than all of those picks will combined for their entire career. And, as I pointed out above, he is till an asset regardless of whether we are able to get him to agree to a new contract. And, btw, the worst possible outcome would be for him to resign

^He was charged with felonious assault. That was before the other guy died. I'm sure the charges will be amended to include some form of homicide. But it will be a tough case, especially if it can be considered mutual combat. From what I heard, it sounded more like a fight than an unprovoked attack. And it isn't one of those situations where a fight happened and the suspect just kept on beating the other guy once he was down. The deceased got punched during the course of a fight and hit his head as he fell.

^There's other possibilities. We could flip him at the trade deadline to a contending team for someone who is signed more long-term...... or we could sign-and-trade him at the end of the season to a team that is over the cap. Bynum was going to be cut regardless by 5pm today. The second rounders from Portland which were included are not all that sexy with the way Portland's trajectory appears to be for the foreseeable future. The right to swap firsts in 2015 might be useless for Chicago if we leapfrog them by that time. The Sacto pick is where we might lose something of value..... but that is only if Sacto can get their sh!te together and finish outside the top 10 in the draft, which doesn't appear likely with the mess their team is and them playing in the West. I think that ends up being a second rounder in 2017 when all is said and done.

What are you worried they might do? Other than the piro who was there in the late 90's, I don't recall vanalism ever being much of an issue at the school.

I also heard several loud pops in my house from the cold. I went out last night around 10pm just to say I felt it. Now I can tell my grandkids what -37 windchill feels like. My dog was alternating legs to stand on trying to take a poop this morning. I wish I could've got it on video.... might've been my one chance for something going viral. Car batter was dead and front tire flat this morning. Lovely. Had to take the wife's car to work. Best of all (sarcasm), our power keeps dripping and going out for a few seconds at a time.

^^Fickell and Vrabel are best friends, iirc. I doubt Mike would agree to supplant him as DC. I still don't understand how the defense operated. There were two coordinators, no? Withers and Fickell, right? The way I understood it, Fickell had the front seven and Withers had the coverage schemes. If somebody has to go, I would say it would Withers.

^ http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/01/as_cleveland_browns_look_for_a.html Take it with a grain of salt.... I don't have much respect for Branson Wright as a sports reporter. But I think the point which comes accross in the headline is very real. This league, right now, is all about QB play....... much moreso than I can ever remember.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The Cavs have wanted Deng ever since he was drafted a few spots ahead of us taking Luke Jackson the year after LBJ came to town. I have trouble imagining a more perfect fit for this team right now. He's a star, but not a superstar. A veteran who leads by example. Above average in about every facet of the game. I have two hang-ups about this trade. First, I don't know what are prospects are to re-sign him this summer, especially considering what he was demanding from the Bulls (the reason the Bulls were willing to trade him). He might end up being a 50 game rental. And second, I wish we didn't have to part with that Sacramento pick. If Sacto remains pitiful for the next 4 years, it will end up being a second round pick. But it could end up being a lottery pick if they make a run at the end of this season. I think the pick is Top 12 protected this year and Top 10 protected the next two years..... something like that. Overall, it is a huge win for the Cavs. Their willingness to give up the additional assett the Lakers were demanding for Pau shows how much more they wanted Deng. I am glad they got their guy. And I'm glad I won't have to see Earl Clark stepping out of bounds on the last possession of any games any time soon.

Lessons can sometimes be learned from tragedies. I very loosely knew the guy who died yesterday from injuries sustained from a bar fight on Mayfield Rd. in South Euclid. The (non-PD) story is that a fight occured and the victim was punched and briefly lost consciousness when he hit his head on a table. He got up fairly quickly, went home, and then days later had to be rushed to the hospital where it was found that he had swelling in his brain that had gone untreated. The fight happened on December 30. He was taken to the hospital on January 3 and died yesterday. This is why they say you shouldn't go to sleep unmonitored after hitting your head. So, folks, anytime you get a concussion, go to the hospital to get cleared. You can't see a bruise on your brain and this type of tragedy can result.

^^true..... But nothing was going to fix the problems at LB and our line was even greener to start the year. We also lost our defensive captain before really getting into the Big 10 schedule. My point was that I don't think the problems were schematic or bad coaching. I hope that Fickell and Vrabel are back, at least. They are great sideline guys. The DC in the booth (Withers?) I don't have much of an opinion of one way or another.

I wouldn't be too quick to get rid of the defensive staff (although I think the co-coordinator - not Fickell - may be in line for a head coaching job at a smaller school). Let's look at things with some perspective: - We have the worst LB corp we have seen at tOSU in my memory. Add on that Shazier had a very quiet game against Clemson for him. I suspect he was one of the players who had the flu (the team got hit with the bug pretty bad during the week leading up to the game). I have no idea why the Orange Bowl color commentator was fawning all over Josh Perry...... other than being a big hitter, I don't think he brings much to the table. He's a strong side backer who can't cover in the flat and doesn't get after the passer. We have some good youngsters coming up and coming in, so hopefully this can be fixed. - Bradley Roby was hurt and did not play. I'm not sure if he was truly 'injured' or if he was banged up enough to not want to face Watkins and see his draft stock fall. He wouldn't have stopped Watkins, but he would've held him well under the total he ended up with. - Our best pass rusher (Spence) was suspended and our second best pass rusher (Bosa) received two injuries in the early part of the game which probably would have caused him to get pulled out of any non-bowl games. Our D-line, overall, was extremely green with the exception of Bennett. The bottom line is that I'd expect our defense to improve next year without a switch in staff. I also look around the landscape and see a lot of points being put up...... hell, even Bama gave up nearly 40 in their bowl loss.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The Lakers think that Chris Grant has to make the playoffs this year to keep his job. Even if Gasol is a half-year rental, he could theoretically get us there. LAL is reportedly insisting that the Cavs include either a 1st rounder or a young talent (Waiters, Karasev, etc.) We do have to include something because a straight Gasol-Bynum trade does not work under the cap rules. Teams seem to think that Waiters is ripe for the picking and can be had for next to nothing...... especially with the national and local media probably vastly overblowing the Kyrie-Dion locker room incident. I suppose it is encouraging about how many teams have inquired. But what they don't seem to realize is that Grant has a lot riding on Waiters (being the guy who picked him #4 overall) and couldn't just pawn him off in a deal even if he wanted to. Factor in Waiters play of late and he isn't going anywhere because no team will offer what Grant would accept. BTW, getting away from the trade chatter for a moment..... I want Dion to study that little run he went on in the fourth quarter last night. He was playing with urgency, yet relaxed. He created space (what he's best at) and then took good shots. He took his time, got his feet under him and went straight up effortlessly with his jumpers. They were almost all perfect swishes. That is the type of play I would like to expect from him on a more consistent basis.

^$250k for the salt. I don't know if that includes OT, gas, and also factors in wear and tear on the City vehicles. But I presume the larger factor is the damage is does to the roads (repairing one side street can cost well in excess of $250k) and the damage is does to the curbside trees. Keep in mind also that it does salt the major roads.

^Maybe your kids wouldn't think you were so grumpy if you didn't wake up at the butt-crack of dawn every morning. FWIW, I don't hate typical "morning guy" as much as I hate "I run 10 miles before you wake up" guy...... especially the A-holes out there in full winter gear running on a day like this.

McDaniels is obviously an early favorite to land the job...... but I think you all are going to be hearing the name Adam Gase a lot in the next few weeks (depending on how far the Broncos go in the playoffs - you can't hire an assistant while his team is still playing). I like Gase. He's my personal favorite at the moment.

I am shovel guy too. I have a snow blower and all it probably needs is a new sparkplug, but I find that we either don't get enough snow in one storm to make it worth it or we get the heavy stuff that the snow blower has trouble with. With regard to the early morning this, I inquired and ordinance where I live says no equipment prior to 9am....... but there seems to be some latitute with snow blowing due to people needing to get to work. Maybe I'll just call my neighbor next time we have a storm coming and ask him nicely to hold off at least until 7:30...... I'll call him around 1am so I make sure he and his wife have the kids asleep first.
