Cleveland: Downtown: Jack Cleveland Casino - Phase 2
I'm rather apathetic about Phase II. I don't think that the success or failure of the Hard Rock will have much of an effect on whether it gets built. You could make the argument either way. I do, however, feel that something will be built on the lot envisioned for Phase II and it might be waaaaaay more appealing to this board than any second phase of the casino.

^^^I am not sure of the extent of the rennovations, but I know they are moving at least some of the HS students over to Wiley (once the middle school students are re-assigned) to allow room for the construction activities. ^So I guess the SE pool is used for the swim team? I just don't remember that pool. I know the swim cadets used the NW pool and I think that was the only swimming event I ever attended at the HS.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I will make one guarantee. Whomever we hire is going to bring along a 4-3 defense..... because it wouldn't feel like a Browns re-boot if we didn't have to fundamentally change a part of the team that isn't broken. I loved the idea that Chud grew up a Browns fan, but this team just wasn't playing hard for him. The body language yesterday was a terrible indictment of his ability to inspire. He was also just so cliche and robotic in his interviews that I couldn't imagine him being a great motivator. One option people shouldn't cross off is actually an in-house fix. Turner stays on as O-coordinator. Horton is promoted to head coach. He was probably going to get some looks from other teams anyways (to satisfy the Rooney rule if nothing else). I'm not excited about the prospect of McDaniels. Saban and Cowher are always mentioned any time we have an opening and it never materializes.

I put re-signing TJ Ward as top priority...... but Mack would be equally hard to replace.

Wow. More Pro Bowlers than wins. JT, Mack, Flash, Haden, and Cameron. Ward named as an alternate. I think Ward and Cameron should be switched, but it is hard to argue with any of those picks from an individual performance standpoint. I wonder how much consideration Phil Taylor got..... he's my defensive MVP. Kind of odd that we had four selections from our below average offense and only one from our relatively stellar D

I recently ordered an American Flag and pole and bracket from some Veterans' Services group. The guy who sold it to me ranted and raved about how the Flag is made in America. He was right..... but when the package arrived, the pole and the bracket had big "MADE IN CHINA" imprints on them :(

A guy from Columbus who covers the Buckeyes was just on the radio up here saying that he has heard strong indications that Vonn Bell will start in the bowl game. I wish they had listened to me prior to MSU ;)....

16 overrated/underated dining trends
The term "barbeque" has a vastly different meaning here in Ohio than it does in Texas or pretty much anywhere down south. I learned that the hard way shortly after moving down south when I was told we were getting "barbeque" for dinner and didn't see one grille when I showed up....... just a large white bucket filled with slop and a bunch of hamburger buns.

^Spot on. White kids beat up someone at school, they are bullies. Black kids beat up someone at school, they are thugs. A bunch of frat boys fight and it is called a rumble. A bunch of black guys fight and it is called a riot or gang warfare. And being from a neighborhood in which I think I might have been the only kid who wasn't black or catholic, I really follow your line of thought there. Those catholic kids (especially the ones who grew up in large families with lots of brothers) are a scrappy bunch.

Well, 'Major League' ushered the best era of Indians' baseball I have ever seen. Maybe this movie can somehow give some mojo to the Browns. BTW.... is that Aaron Goldhammer at 0:11?

^Are those new additions? I don't believe so. It seems like the design just includes the idea of punching new windows into the existing building on the SE and SW corners. The main gym is in the SW corner, with the locker rooms, weight rooms, training rooms, etc. underneath. I doubt they are going to rebuild all of that. I can't remember exactly what is in the SE corner, but I seem to remember there being a pool (not the competition pool, which is upstairs on the north end), as well as the nurse's office..... I think the boiler room is somewhere around there as well.

Wow. I love the idea of removing the science/admin wing, which was a really ugly addition to an otherwise great building and destroyed the H shape. But I don't like the notion of redesigning the courtyard. I don't see how the redesign is any more useful..... and the old design contains so many fond memories for countless alumni. Just looking at the above picture, the area where I ate lunch by the bell is gone, as is the ledge I sat on every day after school is gone too :( I suppose it's better than my co-workers who are Cathedral Latin alums :P

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Oh yeah.... one nuggett from the rumor mill I heard over the weekend. All of this is just scuttlebutt, of course, so take it FWIW. Remember those incidents of the ipads getting stolen from students in CH. Some believe that the students were filing false police reports after illicitly selling the ipads themselves. One kid got away with it and it spiraled from there. It's sh!te like this (if true) that really pisses me off because it gives such a blatantly false perception.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Considering that we are now apparently posting on each and every crime the PD features, it's odd that there hasn't been any mention on here today of the Bratenahl road rage incident in which the South Euclid woman was beaten by the other driver and then run over by his truck. She is currently in critical condition. The suspect is still on the loose. I was at least expecting to hear some gripes about the PD describing the suspect as a brown-haired, medium build man..... with no mention of his race. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2013/12/man_beats_runs_over_woman_in_b.html#incart_river_default#incart_m-rpt-2 Some other media sources reported that it was a white man.... so, contrary to the suggestions otherwise, the PD does not discriminate in its much-debated policy. Another point of interest is that the police are actually now saying that there are some mixed reports on the man's 'description.' Not sure if that means there is some discrepency about his race, but that would not surprise me...... and such common confusion is indeed exactly one of the reasons why journalists are hesitant to report the race of a suspect. I think if it was up to me, I might be inclined to allow reporting of skin tone (fair-skinned, dark-skinned, etc.), but not to guess about race/ethnicity.

^Different circumstances. EC was 'historically' rich in the sense that it includes a stretch of Euclid and particularly JDR's contribution to Millionaire's Row..... specifically, a 250 acre estate (more than 1/10 of the entire city if my math is correct). Millionaire's Row disappeared (for whatever reason) well before EC went down the toilet. The vast majority of EC was not built for the wealthy. It doesn't have the sizeable chunks of real estate you will find in CH and SH which would set a new modern day nationwide precedent if it ever spiraled into a ghetto.- Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
^^^That must be devastating 'news' to that Ferrise guy I know many people hold this view, but I disagree. There definitely are more problems in Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights than "back in the good old days," but I don't see why people think historical integration had anything to do with it. There has been an "outflux" of crime from the city everywhere for quite a while now. Obviously, cities like Maple Heights, Garfield Heights, Euclid, Bedford, Parma, East Cleveland, etc. have seen the effects of it, and it's not like they were known for historical integration. I would say that if anything, CH's and SH's willingness to integrate staved off problems for longer, as the increased demand from people with jobs and money (both black and white) kept the neighborhoods stable much longer than the suburbs where the white people fled at first sight of a black person, causing property values to instantly fall and neighborhoods to decay. Unfortunately, sprawling development has made increased blight almost inevitable in all inner ring and inner city areas. Some have just fought it off better than others, and I'd put CH and SH in the "fighting it off fairly well" category. Where's MTS with his "ding, ding, ding, ding... we have a winner folks!"- Cincinnati Bengals Discussion

That is in the nicer section of CH. Not good. One of the MANY 'nicer' sections of CH..... but very close to the borders of Cleveland and EC, as well as probably the worst part of CH. Let's wait on this one. The PD reporter (perhaps deliberately) makes it sound like the guy was found on the street. Other reports suggest he was found inside his home. And for those who like the LI conspiracy theories, this part of CH is where a lot of the.... ummmmm.... more succesful LI businessmen live. - Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
