Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
^I don't recall anyone ever coming anywhere close to saying that crime is not a problem and should be ignored with the use of "blinders." As far as the "black community" is concerned, the sooner everyone (particularly including the black community) stops treating it as a separate community with separate problems that need to be dealt with within the community, the better off it will be (now, of course, I'm speaking in platitudes since we know that won't happen during our lifetimes). ^^That's an admirable effort. I'm not so sure about its effectiveness in non-Edgewater type neighborhoods in the City proper. I think the community I live in does this well, although certainly not in such an organized manner..... but there is a good bit of self-policing through people knowing people and not being such strangers with their neighbors. I just don't realistically see that happening on a larger scale. Realistic solutions are going to have to come through programs that aren't dependent on volunteers. I have mentioned making more effective use of police presence many times. It's really the only model that has any historical success rate on a large scale that I know of.

Cincinnati: Mayor John Cranley
^^There is a bit of a myth going around about Obama and black voter turnout in the recent elections. There was some increase from 60% in 2004 to 64% in 2008 to 66% in 2012..... but certainly not the astromical increases certain media outlets were trying to sell. The increase was actually consistent, if not less, than what we had seen from 1996 to 2000 to 2004.

^^I take serious issue with that statement. Desensitized, perhaps. Lazy, definitely not..... save for the inevitable bad apples in a bunch of well over 1000

Any ideas? It's easy to piss and moan about needing "solutions"..... it's much harder to actually state what those solutions might be. Platitudes don't help. Realistic, pragmatic solutions to crime are difficult. That said, there are plenty of people doing much more than simply stating there is a problem, but they are vastly outnumbered by those who uselessly expend all of their energy trying to get people to recognize that the sky is blue and water is wet.

Governor John Kasich
The Tea Party seems to be telling Kasich to either "Get on the Express or get run over by it"...... http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2013/12/tea_party_leader_ted_stevenot.html#incart_river_default

Northfield Park/Hard Rock Racino
I think this will, in the long run, end up being a benefit to the downtown casino experience even if it hurts the revenue. The Horseshoe will tilt more towards the high-end, high-stakes gaming, while these other places will entice the opposite sort of gamer.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I was careful to use the word "talented"...... I realize others have better long term production, of course. In terms of short-term production, we already know Gordon is all by himself all-time, leaguewide. No NFL receiver has ever had the 4 games he has had, from an individual statistical standpoint.

^I was thinking about who would take over the 9-12 slot if Rizzo doesn't return. They aren't going to let Hammer go solo. Munch Bishop is the only one I could think of. Maybe Reghi (does he still work there?) If it was Brinda, I would delete KNR from my pre-programmed stations.

JMO from an outsiders perspective, but I think those wanting to do a recall are engaging in some wishful thinking. Recalls are very difficult. Not many people who voted for him, if any at all, are going to vote to recall. Then there are sizeable portions of society who voted against him but won't like the idea of a recall (I would fall into that category). The bottom line is to succeed in a recall, I would say the reason for the same would have to be based on some outrageous actions (preferably some type of corruption or outright criminal activity) which were not foreseen at the time of his election. Didn't this guy run his campaign on killing the streetcar? As an Ohioan, I really want to see the streetcar project go forward and succeed because that would be a huge step back in the right direction for our state and hopefully would trigger other similar projects in the other major cities. I think any energy there is to overcome this guy's agenda should be expended in the courts (maybe go for some type of writ or injunctive relief or taxpayer action?), rather than on a recall.

Is Josh Gordon the most talented skill position player we have seen in a Browns uniform in the last 50 years? I can't think of anyone who I would put ahead of him.

Rizzo is not in the studio this morning. I wonder if he disclosed this to GKB before going on the air yesterday. It seems like it all came out in the middle of his show.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
^From his past court records, it looks as if he is mentally ill. Medication and mental health counseling were included in his sentence. The 4 year sentence which was suspended will now be imposed for that crime and he will get whatever he gets for this crime. I'll bet the cops knew exactly who they were looking for, which helped quickly solve this one.

It's not as easy as unloading an abandoned property. Thousands of residents would need to be relocated. Then you have to consider that the units themselves are probably not amenable to adaptive re-use, which would mean any developer would be looking at both demolition and new construction costs (we know all too well how developers view new construction costs in the post-2008 economic climate which aren't accompanied by public subsidy). But I think I agree with your inference that the land is not as valuable as some suggest. There is fairly heavy industry directly to the north, blocking access to the Lake and blighting the views of it. There is no direct pedestrian connections to FEB or to the park/island. Probably too many negatives to garner any serious consideration from the private sector.

You might be amazed at what alcohol can do to people, especially when a couple has problems and they are both drunk. I wouldn't be amazed at all. I've seen the worst of it and, in a past life, it was my job to deal with it. But I do know that it depends on the person. I'd like to think that the vast majority of guys in society have enough morality in them to never beat on a woman, no matter how many drinks have been consumed and how hot tempers have flared. I know I have never laid my hands on a woman before. I just never took Rizzo for that type of guy..... and I still hope that he isn't. I wouldn't have been the least bit surprised if this was certain other local radio personalities.

I just listened for about 20 minutes during the last hour of the Really Big Show. It definitely seems like he is claiming total innocence but didn't want to talk about it. Didn't he just recently marry that lady?

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Not in the slightest. It used to bother me a bit when the whole LBJ saga was going on and the NY media machine was treating it as a foregone conclusion that Lebron (and any other superstar they wanted) were going to sign with the Knicks. Ever since they were relegated to options D (Anthony) and F (Amare), it is simply something to chuckle at.

Yeah, but we converted the third down, so it's a moot point in the end. Intentional grounding is a loss of down penalty. Without the penalty, we would've been at 3rd and 7. With the penalty, we were set back to 3rd and 17, which we made on that pass to Gordon. It still was an awful, inexcusable call...... but it didn't end up affecting the outcome.

Wow. Ms. Katherine? I'm shocked. Never took Rizzo to be that guy. He was on the f'in air this morning! Take a leave of absence, Bro. If this holds up, I would suspect that he will be off KNR and lose his show on Fox 8.

Oh yeah.... I had forgot about that call. That was the worst call of the day, by far. It was the worst call I've seen in a long time. However, it was not memorable, because we still completed the ensuing 3rd and 17.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I know it wasn't technically the wrong call, but the NFL should also take another look at the intentional grounding rules. Brady would've been sacked (or worse) late in the game but he threw the ball at the feet of a running back who WAS BLOCKING ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE O-LINE. He was unquestionably "intentionally grounding" the ball to avoid a sack. The RB wasn't even turned around to look for a pass, even if he was technically an "eligible receiver" (which made the no-call techically correct).

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
It's not charity. It's foresight..... something this region has been sorely lacking for far too long. We already have plenty of mutual aid among safety forces. It would be rare for neighboring communities to not have such contracts..... although in EC's case, I would have trouble saying that the aid is really "mutual." We have joint school districts, we have joint sewer districts, we have regional municipal courts, jails, dispatch centers, etc. The next step really would be merging cities, on a small scale when it makes sense even if large scale regionalism which you see in Indy, Louisville, etc. never comes to fruition. Leaders may not do what the polls say, but good luck getting a petition for merger approved without the support of the electorate of both existing cities. The process for merging two cities is a bit different than annexation of a township. The legislative authorities can get the ball rolling short of a petition, but they still are required to submit the question to the voters...... absent some different process provided by charter in both cities which I doubt both Cleveland and EC have.

^They are mismatches. The Bowls love the Big10 teams because their fanbases travel as well as any in the country.... which leads to them being selected ahead of their on-the-field value.

If an EC merger into Cleveland gets so much resistance, we might as well delete this thread.
