Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
^This is a negative consequence of sprawl. Maple and Bedford were once more rural, but then got flooded with post-war housing that went out of style 20 years after it was built. The housing stock is not desirable. Expect the same to happen to Parma in the not too distant future.

I don't know that the play calling was any different under Herman. It's just that teams have adjusted to our scheme and, particularly, Barrett. Make him beat you with his arm was Clemson's approach, as well as MSU and PSU this year. Add in the fact that we haven't had a legit downfield threat since Devin Smith. Also, can't underestimate the value Zeke had to this offense. He kept defenses on their toes because he could easily beat "8 in the box" by blasting through the first level and outrunning the DBs.

Another consideration about past crime data is that what would be crimes today were not crimes, or were not charged and prosecuted as crimes, 50 or more years ago. You used to be able to rape and beat your wife with no criminal charges. You could also beat or even kill a minority without criminal charges.

This Is Why You're Fat!
I've gone through many different stages. I've been 220-230 lean with very little body fat (college), and 220-230 not-so-lean (mid-20s). In my 30's, I now float between 175-190, sometimes in very good shape and sometimes in so-so shape depending on the amount and type of exercises I'm doing. Different things work better for different people, but as far as eating is concerned, I find portion size matters more than what I eat. My biggest problem seems to be when I plateau and stop seeing the same gains I do in the first 2-3 months of getting after it. As I get older, I find that my plateau is much lower than it was in my 20's and same type of muscle gains seem more out of reach. I lose some motivation and get content, which leads me to exercise less and eat less frequently (but bigger portions) throughout the day.

^^I'm not one who blames downtown spending instead of gang battles on the murder count. Quite the opposite. I think increased downtown spending will grow the tax base in the City proper, which will lead to increased funding for other causes outside of downtown, as well as hopefully spur an organic outgrowth of redevelopment well beyond downtown. It's not a quick fix, but rather a long range vision which would require more patience than society seems to have. If you don't understand that, you don't understand my "approach" What I don't engage in is racial finger pointing. I don't like it when white people or black people or any other racial subset is blamed for any perceived "rot" in society. You can try to say it is "cultural, not racial" but that isn't helpful either when the cultural issues you are talking about are assigned to one race through stereotypes which are so easily "reinforced" through conscious or subconscious racism. Same goes for minorities who think all of their problems would be solved if racism did not exist. All of this creates a circular argument which is counterproductive to finding this "solution".

That's why I frequent this forum as well. This topic, however, seems to be one where you can only allowed to have one opinion and, if you don't, you're "making excuses"

When I think of concentrated poverty, the east side of Cleveland and many areas of the inner ring suburbs which touch Cleveland are examples of that, even if the density of the population is not what you see in more urban areas like NYC, Chicago, etc. What we have here is block after block after block, entire neighborhoods, of poor people. Outside of a few select neighborhoods, Cleveland proper is hovering right around the poverty line. That's why we rank so high on, if not top, most lists of "poorest big cities" in America. The kids are raised by poor parents, who were mostly raised by poor parents themselves.... they go to schools where nearly the entire student body is in poverty. Nearly half of the CH-UH student population qualifies for lunch assistance.

^Actually, the South has he highest murder rate per capita, followed by the Midwest, then the West, and then the Northeast. What you don't have in Appalachia is concentrated poverty. There really is no such thing as a rural ghetto, although I would venture to guess if you looked at per capita crime stats they are not as far off as you might assume. There are also a lot of places in Appalachia and the Ozarks that are also largely self-policed, where crimes are not reported or at least not taken through the criminal justice system. Concentrated poverty has led to this type of mob violence in the black ghettos and the Latino ghettos of the Americas, as it did in the Irish and Italian ghettos of NYC and other large cities back when there were large pockets of concentrated white poverty..... as it does in the ghettos of India (gang rapes and other horrific mob violence rarely seen here in America) and other places today. American gangs and "turf" hardly originated with the modern version. Russian hooligans engage in this type of mob violence and much worse. Just look at what they did at the Euro Cup or do a search on youtube for some of the largest and most brutal riots imaginable in which every single participant in white. By saying this, I'm not trying to offend or insult the more sensitive members on here. But I do find it disappointing that I get personally attacked if I say anything contra to the group think mentality this topic sadly spawns on UO.

Don't be a d!ck and don't make this personal. I don't know any of the people you work with. I never characterized them as anything unless you read my post like an idiot would.

^There are plenty of Section 8 houses in South Euclid, especially closer to the Cleveland and Euclid borders. This isn't the 1980's anymore. Nearly half of all poverty in the Cuyahoga County is in the suburbs. But if you want to say it is "cultural issues in the black community", I would say okay, sure. I don't like the term "black community". Don't like it when it is used by whites to lay blame for all the ills of society and don't like it when it is used by blacks to segregate themselves. But, if you must, we can't really talk about the "black community" without discussing concentrated poverty. It is a plague within that "community"

^That's about as complex a question as you can ask. There is no magic bullet, except maybe eliminating concentrated poverty (good luck with that). Roving thugs from less fortunate communities are a time tested tradition in modern society, in almost every country that has concentrated poverty. Ah. I thought you were talking about a general curfew. Cleveland Heights implemented rules for Coventry and Lee Rd districts under which minors had to be accompanied by an adult if it was past a certain hour. It seems to have worked well.

^The fight happened around 6:30pm. What curfew do you have in mind to prevent it? Police did use pepper spray. I'm not sure I want to go to a mall, or anywhere, where the private security uses rubber bullets.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
He's been very consistent the past five years. More HRs than any other player over that span, right? 34-42 HRs each season and BA in the .260-.280 range. High walk to strikeout rate. Seems like he showed slow but steady progress with Cin (although his BA slipped as he transitioned into being a power hitter, which is not unusual). Then he had a few injury filled seasons before settling in with Toronto and turning into one of the best power hitters in the league.

I think McMillan is gone, but I hope Samuel and Price return for their senior years. I understand if Samuel doesn't. Not sure he has much room to improve on his stock and would have to risk not getting injured.

Name your top 5 cities...
A bit of an odd question for me. I'll always be a fan of the Cleveland teams, no matter where I live.... especially with modern technology allowing me to watch them wherever I live. The professional sports teams were indeed a draw for me to move back to Cleveland. I'm not sure how big of a draw, but they were to some degree. But professional sports probably would not be a draw for me moving anywhere else. The last city I lived in didn't have any major professional sports teams and I didn't miss it. But I am not so much of a go to the stadium/arena guy.

No such thing. Well, you sure ain't gonna solve it by bringing RICO cases. You could 'solve' it by passing an ordinance outlawing dance clubs and bars that play music in downtown, but that is not going to happen. You pass a law much narrower than that, and the City will likely find itself in court, losing badly.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I think X is speaking more metaphorically and definitely contemplating something outside the reach of RICO. It is a problem without a solution.

JT's lack of progress is surprising. IMO, he has all the traits to be an all-time great college QB, but things have never come together for him to allow his talent and ability to translate into a week-by-week superstar. He does seem to have some issues in the cold (remember, he is from Texas), so I have more faith in him for the playoffs than I would have in the Big10 championship. All that said, what OSU seems to still be missing and has been missing for two years is a true deep threat at WR. He had Devin Smith his freshman year and that forced the defenses to back off in coverage, opening up some larger windows. Even if the deep threat only catches one or two passes a game, his presence makes all the difference. I still say that championship game against Florida would've been much different if Ginn Jr. hadn't broken his ankle in the endzone celebration. When he left, Florida was able to move an extra guy into the box and used press coverage on our WRs. It threw our rhythm completely off.

Cleveland: Population Trends
Do you think your experience might have been different had you grown up in a 2-4 unit building on a tiny lot with barely a yard to speak of, like many of the neighborhoods where these vacancies are occurring? Perhaps, but my house and those of my neighbors were on what I would consider "tiny lots with barely a yard to speak of." They were very much in line with, or smaller, than what you see in the vast majority of Cleveland proper...... hence why we played football in the street as opposed to someone's yard. We did, of course, have the benefit of being on a side street. Close quarters also made things more interesting at times. I can recall "the back way", which was a path we had carved out behind the garages separating the rears or abutting lots. I don't think I would even fit back there now. And it's not like we never went to the park, but we probably spent more time in the nearby ravine or just riding around on our bikes trying to pop wheelies, do endoes(?), and jump the curbs. The point of my post was not to diminish the importance of parks, but simply to note that they are not a pre-requisite to kids having something to do for fun other than video games. A good group of neighborhood kids can make fun without swing-sets and see-saws

Cleveland: Population Trends
I grew up right near several parks, but honestly can't remember spending a lot of my childhood at them. Most of my play time was spent in the front and back yards of my neighbors, along with an occasional game of street football.
