Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
I think we have different definitions of "up the hill" To me, it does not mean everything south of Euclid. The geographical boundary (the large incline) occurs at most points of the city south of Terrace (not including the condo buildings and towers which line the south side of Terrace, such as Terrace Tower or whatever it is called now). The exception to this rule would be the area of the City west of Superior and south of Euclid. I would venture to guess that the portion north of Terrace is more stable than the area to the south. The area around Nela Park is probably on par with the rest of the City income wise, but it greatly benefits from the CH police satellite stations on Noble, especially the one right on the border. The areas which border CH also benefit from the mutual aid contract, which I believe extends the CH patrol to include the hill. The nicest parts of EC is Forest Hills of course and the area near Caledonia park along N. Taylor This is the only area I used. Would this area be correct? No, because it would include large residential buildings on he south side of Terrace but still down the hill. There are probably as many units in those buildings as there are residents in the entire FH neighborhood up the hill. That would impact the numbers. But, also, yes there are a lot of older residents in the FH neighborhood. I'm not sure how that impacts the numbers. Regardless, judging neighborhoods on paper can be very misleading..... and I would bet that applies double in EC

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
This team is making me nauseous. The lack of mental toughness is astounding. If making the playoffs really was the goal, perhaps going into the season with the second youngest team in the league was not such a good idea.

Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
^The upper portion (south of Terrace) I was referencing is the area around Forest Hills park which is SIGNIFICANTLY better off. If you see statistics which suggest otherwise, then the statistics are not accurate. The portion around Nela Park is not that large in terms of number of residences, and the income level might not be that much higher, but it is significantly more stable and safe due to the CH police presence. Same goes with the small sliver west of Superior between Terrace and Mayfield.... it also benefits from the CH police presence and the natural geographic barriers. It would not be surprising if the added police presence and responsiveness has some skewing effect on the crime stats. Trust me, I know these areas much more intimately than on paper. IMO, any vision for EC has to be extremely long term. We're talking several decades, if not a half to a full century, of very slow and gradual gentrification. Short term, artificial fixes won't work. There won't be any silver bullet. What it needs is a push in the right direction, and I truly believe merger/annexation/whatever is a good start.

I'd agree that you can find chunks of Cleveland just as bad as EC, particularly in the southeast parts between 55th and Lee. But the above stats are not the best metric for what we are discussing because they include Forest Hills and certain other parts of EC which there really isn't much concern about. It's the down the hill, north of Euclid, east of Superior, West of Noble block area which is the infectious part. Even absent any housing projects, that area is in the dumps

^Not sure what you mean by "fix." I think 'stabilize" is the more appropriate term here. Cleveland borders EC on the east, west, and north. EC's problems spill over into Cleveland and CH. It's very existence devalues the land on its borders, which causes a domino effect further into Cleveland and CH. Last I heard, EC's active duty patrol had dropped to something like four cars. It's recent safety director actually proposed having the city's firefighters cut grass in the parks when not out on an alarm. The current administration is well-intentioned, but simply does not have the resources to stabilize the area. I read some type of commentary in the PD from a local EC journalist opposing the merger seemingly on the basis that she thinks Morris ignores the strengths and tightness of the EC community. There's some truth to that, but I don't see how EC would lose it's identity as a community with a merger. it would simply become another neighborhood, a la Glenville, OC, D-S, Tremont, UC, Hough, CBD, Central, etc., etc. Hell, it would surely still be called East Cleveland, have its own (strengthened up) police district, be within its own council ward, and so on.

2014 Gubernatorial Election
I really wish there weren't people like Chris Redfern and Chris Schrimpf in politics these days. Their only job is to further drive the wedge...... issuing cheesy, pre-prepared statements overblowing issues which don't even need any added emphasis. I still maintain that the Lt. Gov selection means squat in the end. Kasich's re-election is going to largely depend on state of the State's economy come November 2014. If the unemployment rate starts heading in the wrong direction, as it did in the last report I saw, he is in trouble. The problem with running as a no-nonsense results oriented guy is that you have to actually produce the results and can't resort to trying to explain the uncontrollable complexities which might have frustrated your efforts.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
LSU was better than us the year we played them. I don't dwell on that game much. But the Florida game still irks me. I maintain to this day that it simply was a case of everything going wrong for OSU and everything going right for Florida to start the game which set the momentum in a direction that OSU never recovered. Damn you Roy Hall! Regardless, we are not a Jim Tressel team in 2013. Tressel built and coached up his squad to beat Michigan on a cold November day. Meyer's team is a different animal.

^And they appeared to be waaaaaay more than a bit worse than Miami going into that championship game...... and they appeared better than Florida the year they got spanked. You never know. I agree with Gramarye...... I'd rather roll the dice on the NC game.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
I think the rehab work on the Shoefield is more than a bit more complicated, particularly considering the facade restoration to earn the tax credits. I assume that molds of some kind need to be made individually for each damaged portion and then sent away for precasting? I don't know if I am using the correct industry lingo....

^IMO, it depends on if L. Ross goes back to playing like he was towards the end of last season. Sky is the limit if he does. If he doesn't, Sweet 16 would be as high as I would bet.

Oh... I never said anything about "imminent." But we do see activity. We do see work on the facade. I don't think any of that would be happening if things weren't moving forward..... at whatever pace.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
^That happened last Sunday when the Steelers defender punched Campbell in the face, causing him to lose the ball, which was returned for a TD. To make matters worse, Campbell got a concussion. So instead of the Steelers up 20-3, the Browns should have had a first down at or past midfield only down 10. I am not a big fan of that rule which doesn't allow a defender to touch the QB's head (even if it is unintentional), but so long as it is a rule, I da^# sure want it called when it happens to my team!

Remember 668 Euclid? These things take time. There was a big delay with the project, but all indications we have is that it has a green light at this point.

Peter B. Lewis, Progressive Insurance Chairman passes away at 80
The benefit to moving downtown would not be so much to appease the workforce the company has recruited while out in Mayfield. It would be to cast a larger net on potential employees..... whether those prospective employees come from the west-side or are the type of young people who would have crossed it off their list of places to apply due to the suburban location. That said, it ain't happening folks. Progressive and Mayfield Village have tied the knot. It's staying put.

I only worry because this is the one way to salvage TTUN's season. If they derail the undefeated Bucks, all will be forgiven in that cestpool outside Detroit. I hope our guys are fully aware of this and the way it could tarnish the run they are on.

NBA: General News & Discussion
^While I'm all in favor of letting a player dictate when he is healthy enough to return, these injuries are not related. Different knee.... so its not like it was an aggravation of the same injury. Rose will fall into the Grant Hill, Penny Hardaway, Tracy McGrady category of players whose injuries derailed HOF careers. He will need to reinvent his game to avoid these constant injuries. Beal is hurt again too. After seeing him play this season, I thought he was on a trajectory to be one of the best 2's in the league.
