  1. I'm glad you brought up the Zimmerman/Trayvon case. Perfect example. Check out the initial reports of that 'incident' in the Orlando Sentinel. http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/crime/os-fatal-shooting-sanford-townhomes-20120226,0,1610847.story WHOOOOPS! NO MENTION OF RACE for either Trayvon or Zimmerman. Race was not mentioned in the media reports until AFTER Trayvon's parents publicly raised concerns that race was a factor in their son's death.... AND the flubbing of the investigation by police.... AND the failure/refusal to arrest the admitted shooter. At that point, the race of the parties WAS relevant/pertinent to the ongoing media reports on the story. Like it or not, there was and still is a question as to whether race played a factor in Trayvon's death (i.e. would he be alive if he was a white kid walking in a polo shirt?). Putting aside those simple facts which show the nonsense of your analogy, there is absolutely no indication or accusation that race played a factor in the robberies in CH. None. There is no indication that On the Rise or the Dollar Store were targeted by the robber(s) because they were owned or operated by a people of a particular ethnicity. There is no indication that race has any relevance to the story. Moreover, you act like the media only fails to report the race when the suspect is black. Not true at all. The same test applies to all reports. It's just that you don't notice it because you and everybody else don't take the slightest notice to complain when the reverse occurs. Of course, as with all standards/tests, this one can be misapplied or abused. There is always the potential for human error or prejudice or bias to come into play. I'm sure there are plenty of examples of the media not reporting race when it should, and examples of the media reporting race when it absolutely shouldn't (see the link I provided above). But, re-directing the conversation back to this story, I don't see how reporting on the race of the suspect would be productive. If you are truly interested, you might be able to obtain a copy of the police report or you could call the businesses and get more information than what the media is reporting.

Kasich was not at the forefrong of SB5. That was in the works before he got elected and was pushed (mostly) and definitely drafted specifically by certain General Assembly members from SW Ohio, spearheaded by Shannon Jones (Sen. - Springboro). Believe it or not, Kasih actually insisted upon several material changes to the initial draft which took the bill off the deep end and made it, frankly, unworkable.
  3. Here's a decent write-up on the issue, which contains some observation of actual misuse or questionable use of race - http://www.arktimes.com/arkansas/not-so-black-and-white/Content?oid=1878067 Newsrooms apply a standard test, according to a 2008 article from the Society of Professional Journalists: "Is the racial information useful to people in the community who might know the attacker or want to avoid harm themselves? Or is it so general that it only merely contributes to stereotypes about one group or another?" And then there is this explanation - http://blogs.venturacountystar.com/crime/2009/04/race-in-suspect-descriptions.html The reason our policy is generally to avoid including race in suspect descriptions is we feel many descriptions are too vague to actually help people identify a suspect, and including race in a broad description can be more problematic than useful. We do include it, as we did in this case, when there is enough specific description to really narrow the field of possible suspects* * * * * If a witness said he or she saw a white man of medium height and with a slim build walk into a store, that wouldn't narrow the field of possible suspects enough to merit the inclusion of race. It might contribute more to undue suspicion being placed on some of the thousands of people matching that description than to helping police arrest the perpetrator. If, however, a witness described a white man with long black hair and a goatee, about 5' 11," 150 pounds and green eyes with a scar on his left cheek and wearing a button-down shirt and slacks, readers would have enough information to narrow the field of possible suspects to a much smaller group. In that case, race would be relevant and helpful because it is one part of a very specific description. So, the media generally seems to use some type of test to determine whether reporting the race of the suspect is "pertinent" to the story.
  4. ^Perhaps, but let's just assume that the description was a black man, light-skinned, 5'10, 185 lbs, in his late 20's. That describes more than a few people I know to a tee. I wouldn't call in a tip on that description. On the other hand, I can't remember seeing anyone recently who has a shirt with 'Intelligence' scrolled across it..... but if I did, I would call it in so the police could follow up. I agree that the more detailed the description, the better. But, in the end, I really doubt that the motivation of people who constantly complain about the lack of racial descriptors in crime coverage is more about a desire to solve crimes as it is some odd desire for vindication of thought. Hell.... these people complain when the suspect has already been apprehended if the media doesn't report that the arrestee was black. For sure, the next time I see someone complaining about a crime report which fails to report that the suspect is white will be the first.
  5. Ugh. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Ugh.

^Although there is plenty he does and supports which I don't like, it is this type of independent streak which will probably lead me to vote for Kasich when he is up for re-election. I may not like him, but I respect him.
  7. ^I can't be sure. But it is what I heard based on word of mouth I would trust. I was talking about the On the Rise robbery. The most material aspect of the description actually WAS included. A somewhat distinct and noticeable piece of apparel is much more useful for identification purposes than simply stating the person's race. At least by describing the clothing and the type of vehicle he was driving, someone might be able to offer some leads. But if you're looking for a black guy in Cleveland Heights..... well, good luck. Just think about it for a minute.
  8. It was a black guy. Does that help you identify him? Please call the CHPD if you have any tips on where they should look. In other news, the Chagrin Falls pumpkin roll resulted in several arrests. Unfortunately, the bias media coverage omits the race of those arrested, including the girl who escaped from police after being handcuffed and was on the loose for several hours. They just recently arrested no less than 7 people in association with a string of robberies. Nobody posted anything about it, despite all of the concern about these recent crimes.... which probably left the impression that the issue was not dealt with by the police.
  9. I think you mean "lucky" enough..... for now. I can't get on board with calling someone smart who risks his life and freedom for a few hundred dollars.
  10. according to cleveland.com, the Dollar General on Lee Rd. and On the Rise bakery on Fairmount have both been robbed at gunpoint in the last few days. Whoever it is, they are not very smart. Each time only made off with a few hundred. Luckily no one was hurt.
  11. You want a new-build, low rise condo tower on PS?

I like it. They could put a whole new spin on the 7th inning stretch........ "a one, a two, a one, two, three four...... [crowd starts singing] rubber duckies your number one, you make gametime so much fun..."
  13. If they are not going to build the two other phases of the condo building, I sure hope that they do something with the 'facades' on both ends.

    T. Benji tore his ACL. Out for the season. Sucks.
  15. The one where we dont forget the part about yearning to breathe free or that that was meant in the philosophical rather than the economic sense. Ahhh..... "tired" and "poor" must've also been simply mentioned in "philosophical" sense. We didn't actually mean for other countries to send us their tired and poor and huddled masses. How silly. It must've been that we only wanted those educated, rich immigrants who wouldn't have to share their weatlh if they brought it here..... as in those "poor" old rich folk who are "tired" of paying taxes and being "huddled" together in the denser cities of Europe or Asia. They just wanted their estate ranch somewhere down in Texas.

As with most of CSU's schools, and as touched on above, if you want to work/live in Cleveland, CSU is a great choice.... perhaps even a better choice than the other two. If you want to leave the City or State when done, go with the more nationally renowned programs assuming cost is all the same. You might also want to look at trends. It wasn't that long ago when I was applying for colleges and OSU and UC were generally thought of as "safe schools" for in-state students. Now, at least in OSU's case, you needn't even apply if you are not towards the top of your class. I've heard that UC has also raised its admissions standards. Give it another 10-15 years and CSU might be on the same trajectory. Point being, while an OSU degree was not considered all that prestigious when I was looking at colleges, it would look nice hanging on my wall right now.
  17. ^Which language is it that "best people" translates to "wretched refuse"?

It's gotta be that #15 jersey, right? I say burn it and trade/cut anybody who has worn it.

Not sure where to put this. But Kasich was the one who shoved the Medicaid expansion "down our throats", so it probably best fits here. The story is that, even though they ardently opposed doing the expansion, the GOP leaders in the state house want to enact an across the board tax cut with the savings. The proposed tax cut would give the average middle class family about $40 extra dollars for the year. One more trip to Applebee's for two, in other words. Since it is an even across the board 4% cut, the savings would disproportionately go to the wealthy..... ooops, I mean "job creators". The counter proposal from the evil socialists on the other side of the aisle is to use the money for education and public services. http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2013/10/ohio_senate_gop_leaders_seek_i.html#incart_river_default

NE would never do that trade. Belichek values draft picks more than Banner does. And I don't like it anyway for the Browns. You're trading a proven talent (albeit with off-field concerns) for an unproven QB (with a big arm and slow feet, I might add...... sound familiar?) and a middle to late second round pick. That said, after some further evaluation, I can't say I am enamored with the QB class for this year's draft. Certainly no Andrew Luck in it, IMO. Truth be told, I think the best QB in college football right now is not draft eligible - FSU's Jameis Winston.

Nothing worse than a heavy, slushy snow when the leaves are still on the trees. I have a minimum of $2000 damage to my trees. A few of the smaller, ornamental trees just snapped..... trees I had planted with my own two hands. I've got a serious bone to pick with mother nature
  22. Maybe that's because we are proud of our melting pot status. We don't want our immigrants to lose all of their culture and 'assimilate' into whatever 'Kentucky USA' deems to be 'American culture.' Immigrants strengthen our society by bringing the strenghts of their own cultures to mix with ours. Everything melts together.
  23. ^It wouldn't be a convention center hotel without one. The new Westin will have a ballroom or two.... as does the Rennaisance..... the Tudor Arms...... and I assume the Intercontinental. Every nice hotel does.

Believe it or not, Campbell gets sacked more frequently than Weeden. He might not hold onto the ball as long, but his delivery is painfully slow. The Chiefs are going to pin their ears back and get after it.... which they would've done if Weeden was starting anyway.
  25. ^My point was that this is a problem that is moving inwards from the suburbs/exurbs, defying the normal path of spread of drugs. It was a huge problem in Lake before there was much of any problem in Cuyahoga. Just talk to any Lake County cop and they'll tell you.
