Cuyahoga has been a little bit late getting into the heroin resurgence. It has been a huge problem in Lake and Ashtabula in recent years. After near extinction, 'smack' is back in a big way.

US Economy: News & Discussion
I guess someone has to step in to update this thread with tidbits of news that the sky might actually not be falling.... According to the BLS household survey, part-time jobs fell 594,000 in September while full-time workers were up 691,000. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/myth-obamacare-causing-part-time-135441398.html

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Those two have not played a lot together over the course of Tristan's career, mostly due to Andy's injuries, but the chemistry seems to be clicking just fine so far. In fact, we have seen several dynamic passes from Andy to Tristan this preseason. It helps that both of them are serviceable from 15-20 feet out with their jump shots and ability to drive.... two things neither of them were very good at earlier in their careers. They are also both interchangeable between C and PF. Ideally, you want to bring Andy early off the bench to run circles around the other teams starters once they start to get tired. When Bynum gets healthy enough to play, I expect him to start alongside Tristan, with early relief (about midway through the 1st quarter) coming from Andy off the bench. ESPN has finished their player rankings, btw. Kyrie came in at #8. Andy was at #62. Tristan was at #99. Dion, Bynum, Jack and Bennett all came in shortly after Tristan. Bynum, of course, would be a top 20 player easily if healthy. I expect Tristan to make a giant leap this year. Dion might..... he might not. I'm still up in the air as to whether he is going to be more than just a solid player. Time will tell.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
^The developers are focusing on their development, not the overall effect of an oversaturation. New restaraunts and neighborhoods tend to do well..... at least long enough for the developers to make a profit. As for the restaraunts, they go through the financing process like everyone else. If the math doesn't add up, they won't get financed. Here on this board, we take into consideration such things as what effect a bunch of new restaraunts going into the FEB might have on E 4th, WHD, Tremont, OC, DS, LI, etc. Wolstein and Co. don't. Personally, I don't feel it is too much. Especially considering that this development is bringing in new residents and helping support an added influx of visitors. Then there is also the uniqueness factors like Toby Keith's bar, which should bring in visitors from the exurbs and beyond who may have never had any interest in coming downtown. I can't think of a vibrant downtown which didn't have tons of restaraunts and bars. I've been to a few relatively "dead" downtowns in which you really have to search to find a decent spot to eat. And I'm sure you've noticed in your foodie discussions, that our food scene is one reason people implore tourists to visit here. Might as well keep building on a strength IMO

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Speaking of "Uncle Drew"..... him and Wes (Kevin Love) are supposed to be picking up a new teammate this week. I haven't seen any speculation on who is might be. My best (wild) guesses are Paul George, Steph Curry, or Anthony Davis. The latter would make a great old man with 'the brow. Whomever it is, they just need to remember Uncle Drew's rule - "don't reach, young blood."

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
^They were trying to show off a little too much for the crowd at the Schott against what might be one of the worst teams in the NBA this season. I get it though. Kyrie certainly earned some CBus fans he might not have previously had. I imagine the marketing departmnet got on the team after their poor showing in Canton. Cincy is next on the schedule. I like that they are doing a mini Ohio tour before the season. Sims is looking real solid. Typical for a Georgetown bigman. In fact, you could argue that Zeller is going to have to beat him out when he comes back for that backup center job. Sims will make the team, regardless, as he can play both C and PF. I think the Australian PG, Delladova (?), also makes the 15 man roster. I expect it to look something like this... Bynum - Varejao - Zeller Thompson - Bennett - Sims Gee - Clark - Felix Waiters - Miles - Karasev Irving - Jack - Delladova I think I've accounted for everyone. That would leave maybe one spot if Bynum or somebody else starts the season on IR (I doubt it). If there is a slot open, I would expect it to come down to Jermaine Taylor (SG) and Kenny Kadji (C/PF). Based on minutes handed out in the preseason, Taylor would seem to have the edge.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
I think it is a mistake to just look at the raw data and go to the typical Clevelander debbie downer attitude. For Cleveland moving forward, I'm more interested in quality over quantity. I also want to see greater diversification. I think we are heading in the right direction on both fronts. If you want to get at the root of the problem, I honestly don't think it is anything we are or are not doing now. The most important thing is too keep thinking long-term and not get sucked into the short-term band-aid game.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
The knee was down when the ball popped out..... but I thought I saw the ball pop loose in his hands just when the hit was made. Gipson put his shoulder right on the ball, like he was coached to do. The ball doesn't have to be out of your hands for it to be a fumble. The second he lost 'control' of the ball, it was a fumble. It at least called for a second look..... but that was precluded by the penalty. Even if it really was a fumble, the Pack would have got the ball back +15 yards.

^My point was that it doesn't help to "spin it" worse than it is..... as the PD loves to do. Sunshine on a dog's arse is still sunshine. And it certainly does no good to just say "this sucks" and throw up your arms.
-
Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
^I think the PD is adding a little flair to the issue, especially the headline. We are talking about yearly job losses measured over a full calendar year. We did not lose 7,900 jobs in August. We lost 7,900 jobs from August 2012 to August 2013. Also, we didn't lose the "most" jobs if you do an apples-to-appels comparison. There were metros that lost 5x more in the same time period. The article clears that up a bit, but let's face it.... 95% of the population reads the headline and maybe a paragraph or two. I've also grown a bit skeptical of these BLS stats.... at least using them for something more than best guestimates. I would love some more detail. What was the quality of the positions lost? What was the private sector to public sector comparison? (our public sector probably still has a good bit of bleeding to go to right-size itself to population loss). Did we again suddently lose a bunch of "farm jobs" nobody ever knew existed?

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
One thing that OSU has working against them that I don't see get much play is that, while the Big 10 schedule is certainly easier than several of the other major conferences, the OSU game is the 'Super Bowl' of the season for nearly every one of our opponents. Teams come in with their best gameplan against us. You saw that in the last three games.... certainly the Northwestern and Iowa games. They 'look ahead' to us when the schedule is released and it makes it more difficult for us to blow teams out. I see a lot of similarities between this season and the national championship season. We were not considered in the same league as Miami, and we survived several close calls on our way to an undefeated season.

Cleveland: University Circle: Uptown (UARD)
I don't think we can dismiss that the location was problematic, especially considering that it was a bit of an odd-ball compared to the other businesses at Uptown. It was not street visible and was not placed in a building which Clevelanders have known for some time to have good food (L'Albatross replaced That Place on BellFlower). On 4th Street, Lee Rd, etc., Accent might have killed it. No way to know for certain. The biggest problem is that it closed before most people even knew it was open. Also keep in mind that this is hardly unusual. The failure rate for start up restaraunts is astronomical, even in the hottest markets.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
^Finley had already taken two steps, was starting to move upfield, and he himself lowered the crown of his helmet. If he keeps his head up, he does not get hurt. The NFL is making it very hard on DBs with this transition to the new rules. They will get it worked out, I'm sure. But there is no consistency at the moment. If it was just another play in the game, I wouldn't be so upset. But that was a HUGE play. Gipson jarred the ball loose and Mingo was up and running. Not only did the refs get the flag wrong..... they called him down by contact and blew the whistle while Mingo was going the other way with the ball.

I also thought the food was not as good the second time I went. They had changed the menu around a bit, but I still liked it. Sadly, it was really the only reason I had to patronize the Uptown strip. I'm not going down there for Jimmy John's or Chipolte, or to shop at Constantino's. I'm not really a MOCA guy either. I suppose I will still enjoy the sites as I ride by.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Looks like they are going to have to pay Campbell that bonus after all. The Weeden thing has been beat to death so I won't add to it. He's getting worse. He's lost all confidence. At least he was 'watchable' in the second half. It would have been nice if he could put two good halfs together. Whatever. He's done. There are other issues on this team. The drops are still inexcusable. Rogers throws the ball harder than Weeden and the backups to the backups for Green Bay are holding on to the ball. WTF is with Bess? I thought sure hands was supposed to be his strength. With a struggling QB, we can't have the WRs continually killl drives for us. The refs from yesterday need to be reprimanded. There were some calls that went our way in the first half which should not have. Too bad we weren't able to capitalize. But the calls which did not go our way in the second half were outrageous. That was a clean hit by Gipson!!. He used his shoulder! We should have had the ball in GB territory while still able to mount a comeback after Finley fumbled and Mingo recovered the ball. There was also the interference call against Skrine and a few others I can't recall right now which were terrible flags.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
The convenience store faced Cedar but was set back with a small parking lot in the front. The lot took up the actual "corner" of that intersection. There were two entraces, iirc. One was on Taylor and the other was from the diagonal street. There might have been a tiny cut street/alley through which went to Cedar from where the street ended and between where the parking lot was and the building which housed the first incarnation of Alternative Care Car Solution (after the mechanics broke away from Motorcars).
-
Cleveland Heights: Development and News
I completely forgot about the diagonal streets. I certainly remember the one on the southeast corner, but I don't recall it going all the way to the intersection. I remember it dead-ending into the parking lot of that convenient store which was on the corner and eventually torn down, along with some housing, for the current strip mall.
