We paid Phil $3.8 and $3.2 mill in the past two years. He took $2.2 to sign with SF. He wanted a shot at the Super Bowl

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
^Show your papers? You think these kids have IDs. I doubt it. Regardless, the police have to have reasonable suspicion you are engaged in illegal activity to require you to show your ID. Not saying there wasn't reasonable suspicion here or that i wouldn't want the cops to do something proactive. It's a difficult situation given that freedoms apply to all, regardless of how scary you look. Well, I'm glad that you agree that the Chief should not be a political appointee who serves at the will of the Mayor and, obviously then, agreed with the Fire Union's efforts to derail those same changes for appointing a Fire Chief (which is still civil service tested and may not be selected from outside the bargaining unit) :) But you are overlooking the contraints the local and state civil service laws factor into disciplinary measures. There are serious limitations on the discretion to discipline which do not apply to non-civil servants like you and me. Also, it is not the McGrath who controls the discipline, but the Director of Public Safety, Martin Flask. Regardless, I think you are taking one or two highly publicized (by Triv and Frantz at least) cases and overgeneralizing the City's attitudes towards its police. Like I said, it is a para-military organization and there will be discipline on a regular basis. But, overall, the discipline issued by the City pales in comparison to that of some of the stricter Chiefs in the suburbs where a cop can get terminated for things that the City barely notices.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
This is not true. Cops are given plenty of leeway both by the applicable law and their superiors. Certainly, in a department the size of Cleveland's, you are going to have some disciplinary issues, but the recent meme (all from the justice center chase) about the command staff not having the patrolmen's backs is simply not true. You can look at a few isolated incidents and come to that conclusion, or you could view it from the resolution of thousands of potential disciplinary actions which never get reported by the media or circulated on FB. It is a para-military organization and members are always going to face discipline. But they are also given every benefit of the doubt by the investigators.

Cleveland: Downtown: May Company Building
I suspect it would be to maximize the number of units they can put in the building. A courtyard serves the same purpose as an atrium or light well.

The City should just import the guys (I mean girls) who make their presence felt at about 1:00 of this video.....

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I don't think you have to worry about FG's inside the 20, regardless of who they sign. We could get the kicker from Iggy to knock those down. It is more like the situations where we are facing fourth down inside the 40. I'm hoping that not having the "Sure Thing" Dawson crutch might incentivize the coaching staff to not play to the field goal and actually go for the gusto

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Whatever happens, I want something that embraces and is premised upon the fact that it is a WATERFRONT. Start from there and build a design that capitalized first on the location and then takes other factors into account. There is no sense in building something there that can go pretty much anywhere else there is available land. We already learned that lesson with the stadium and the shoreway

Are 'interior' units (no walls on the exterior of the bldg) allowed under the fire code and other laws? Wouldn't such units have to be in the plans to squeeze 400 units into the MCB?

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Buffalo avoided it being a laugher only because they had the best player on the field yesterday: Khalil Mack. I had seen the first round projections, so I had made it a point to try and pay attention to what he did. As it turns out, I didn't have to pay any special attention...... it is impossible to not notice that guy play. He was all over the field with TFLs, sacks, returning an INT for a TD, and was even the one that sacked Miller way back on the goal-line when that penalty was called that KJP referenced. I know the announcers harped on it, but I have to re-emphasize that Mack (6-4 250) could not be caught by either Dontre Wilson or Braxton Miller on his way to the TD. Those are two of our fastest, if not THE fastest, players on our team. I honestly think that I haven't been as impressed with a college level OLB since Lavar Arrington played at PSU. It looks like the MAC is going to have two straight years of a top 5 pick in the draft

Cleveland: Retail News
The retail/services component of the Galleria is being forced into something whcih must survive on its connections.... which are vast considering it is directly connected to Erieview Tower and has underground connections to the AJC building and One Cleveland Center. I would guess that at least 95% of the traffic in the galeria is coming from or going to the surrounding office space

Ohio High School Football: General News & Discussion
Glenville also pulls from outside the City. They've had a number of talented kids transfer in from numerous inner ring east side neighborhoods over the years. They also tend to get a lot of kids who transfer/flunk out of St. Eds after 9th or 10th grade. I know that one of Heights' better players (Chaz Jones iirc) prior to its rebirth transferred to Glenville for his senior year. I seem to remember that one of his parents lived in the CMSD. If the parents have joint custody, that is all that is really needed, even if the one outside the district is technically the "residential parent." While I was in HS, my mom moved just a few blocks away in to the SE-L school district, but my dad lived in CH so I was able to stay put

Ohio High School Football: General News & Discussion
Bagley went for 275yds and 4 TDs against Toledo St. John's last night in another blowout (51-20) to open the season. I'm sure he had a boatload of tackles on defense as well. I'm still somewhat shocked that he isn't being recruited more heavily, but have heard (definitely not first hand from someone that would know) that grades may be an issue. The WR/DB, Dorian Baker, is getting much more buzz nationally. They also have a senior transfer from CCC at QB (Taz Pauldo) this year who is supposed to have a really impressive arm. They'll need him because their schedule is absolutely brutal playing at Maple Hts, Euclid, and Shaw... with Strongsville, Glenville, and Warren G. Harding visiting the intersection of Cedar and Lee.

Cleveland anniversary suggestions
I doubt you'll need a reservation on a Sunday, but it is a rather small space and it can't hurt to make one. We've only made reservations when going in a larger group. If I could make another suggestion..... if you can do it, go on Friday or Saturday. The ambience of LI is not in full throttle on Sunday. It won't be empty, but it won't feel quite so alive. LI never gets rowdy, so it will be laid back no matter how much foot traffic there is. But if you go on one of the other days, you might, for instance, get the added perks of street performers (possibly)

Cleveland anniversary suggestions
While we went to Accent (highly recommended) this year for our anniversary, the wife and I had (for about three or four years running) been enjoying our night in Little Italy. We would go to one restaraunt for appetizers and drinks (La Dolce Vita is good for that), another for dinner (we like Michael Angelo's or Etna), and then spend some time on the street patios eating dessert at one of the bakeries. There is live music often this time of year. Little Italy just has that romantic and easygoing vibe to it which fits an anniversary date nicely. If you want to get the day started earlier, I would also highly recommend a trip over the Art Museam prior to dinner. If you haven't been there since the renovations were completed, it will blow you away.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Is the difference that the PD is reporting "jobs", not how many individuals are employed? One person can have multiple jobs.... potentially dozens if each "corporate hat" counts as a separate "job" for BLS purposes. I suspect the public sector drag is still having the most significant effect on the numbers for NEO. That is hopefully coming to an end. First, there was the initial shock of layoffs. Then the layoffs slowed or ended and the retirement weren't being backfilled 1 for 1. That strategy for police and fire is going to be tested as all the DROP members in OPF are coming due in bunches over the next 5 years.

US Economy: News & Discussion
Not when the other $9,000 is in a Cayman Island bank account, 'gifted' to a business partner's daughter's ex-roommate, or tucked away in some trust fund for the debtor's kid ;) For all these safety nets, including bankruptcy, I just wish we could do a better job of rooting out those who are gaming the system. The problem is that would require investment and, gasp, government workers. Unless...... I GOT IT...... we privatize investigation and enforcement, making it a for profit business paid on commission by how much savings result from exposing the fraud.

US Economy: News & Discussion
I'd say fraud within the safety net system is the problem, not the system itself. Too many people collecting disability or workers' compensation who are not really disabled or injured. Too many people claiming to be single parents when they really are not. Too many people claiming to be unemployed who are really working under the table. Too many employers using under the table workers to their advantage and profit. And then don't get me started on people (corporations are people too!) who cheat on their taxes by underreporting their income (or not reporting it at all), those not paying sales or other taxes for cash purchases, and those hiding money overseas and then claiming bankruptcy here in the states.
