Urban development in Cleveland still going the wrong direction
FWIW, this thread is duplicative. We started a Cleveland Zoning Code thread awhile back to vent about the refusal to insist that every development in the City proper be urban utopias

Governor John Kasich
The "machine" told him he would be taking a dirt nap if he didn't join the conspiracy to destroy life as we know it. It all centered around Strickland's hesitation to install Sharia Law and refusal to order the State's National Guard to operate the air defense system which targets reindeer

Governor John Kasich
^Now think about what your response to this program would be if it was spawned by and operated under Strickland or Fitzgerald. I'm a mild fan of Kasich, but JobsOhio is without a doubt a train wreck (no pun intended) for his administration and political brand.

Cleveland: East Side Neighborhood Development
^Ideally, this is true. But that model is not working for people looking to establish sucessful businesses in that neighborhood.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Hmmmm...... Ogbannaya listed #1 at FB? I guess they don't plan on running out of the I-formation very much. I think the position battle which most intrigues me is the ILB spot opposite DQ52. Robertson, Carder, and JMJ are all still in the mix I would guess.

What happens to that 14.7% when you factor in 'under-the-table' workers or otherwise 'off-the-books' ummmm..... earners?

CLEVELAND - Tastefully yet Terminally Progressive (NEW PHOTOS ADDED 8/11/13!)
Nice. If anyone ever wonders why it is called "the Forest City", go up to the observation deck and have a look around. I haven't been up there since I was a kid. It have to put it on my to-do list

Best Movies Ever Made?
New subcategory - Best movie VILLIANS of all-time (sorry if already covered, but I skimmed through the thread and didn't see anything) I will start off by nominating John Kreese from the original Karate Kid. Whenver I really want to hurt somebody (physically or psychologically), I hear him in my head - "Sweep the leg...... you have a problem with that?..... no mercy" Other considerations off the top of my head would be: The Joker - Dark Knight AND Batman Bill the Butcher - Gangs of New York John Doe - Seven Little Bill - Unforgiven Sugar - No Country for Old Men Hanibal Lecter - Silence of the Lambs Nurse Ratchet - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest The Terminator - The Terminator Jack Torrence - The Shining

Best Movies Ever Made?
the only two hockey movies that come to mind are Slapstick ... and Sudden Death. There has to be more solely because I dont want to think of Sudden Death as the 2nd best hockey movie. Slap SHOT! WTF were we thinking!?! I need to do some Hail Marys tonight for that one

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
^Cal nearly beat OSU last year. OSU held on by one TD. It's not a walkover game, no matter the records. The other two are easy wins, but not "preseason." I honestly don't understand the criticism as to which games he is suspended. If you want to argue that the LENGTH of the suspension is wrong, there can be a valid debate on that (especially because I think the video show he clearly did something in retaliation for the girl smacking him..... which is another debate). But I'm not aware of any suspension handed out in the preseason which did not attach to the start of the season, beginning with the first game and consecutive games beyond that. Further, this was an individual player incident, not a team violation. There is no cause to punish the team. Hyde, on the other hand, will likely lose a significant amount of $ over this because it will shadow him through the draft process. A red flag will be attached to every scouting profile of him.

What do you define the Midwest to be?
It's not an aversion. An aversion is better exemplified as your reaction whenever someone from other parts of the state try to explain differences in their region which you somehow, for whatever reason, get offended by ;) To the extent that one insists upon diving up the Country into the most basic regions of East, South, Midwest, and West...... AND to the extent you want to use state lines to deliniate those regions..... Ohio most certainly would fall under 'Midwest'. But what we know about Ohio is that it is an extremely diverse state with extremely diverse influences. That's one of the main reasons why it is used for market testing so much. It's not anything like Kentucky or Arkansas or Oregon. We should embrace that diversity instead of constantly trying to deny its existence

US Economy: News & Discussion
I have posted numbers mainstream articles that show it has. So prove it hasn't. BLS did change the calculation method..... in 1994. The changes to the CPS were first contemplated under the Reagan Administration and implemented under the Clinton Administration.

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
Agreed on the last two sentences....... just not in THIS building. There is more than adequate space elsewhere in downtown to fill those needs.

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
A bank is not 'retail' in the way I generally think of the term, albeit it may fall within its general definition. Would you be OK with it becoming an Old Navy? How about a CVS? I think the key here is that, whatever they do, it must be tastefully done.

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
^^I haven't given it much thought, but I would first and foremost like to see it preserved and not obstructed or perverted in any way. I don't like the idea of retail in this building. Perhaps the best use IMO (although probably not practical with private ownership) would be to use it as a museam of some kind or just leave it as is and open it up to the public for touring on a regular basis. EDIT: I answered your question about my preference before you edited your post to remove it.

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
I remember something with tables and a salad bar in the middle. When I think of a grocery store, I think of high shelves dividing multiple aisles, checkout lines, and shopping carts. I don't trust mock-ups to give an accurate picture and I don't trust large grocers to put historical significance over profit.

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
Am I understanding this correct? Using the Rotunda as a grocery store? No thanks.

No. The drunk bar fight was Kickboxer. Bloodsport was the one with Bolo Yeung, the "Chinese Hercules".... who also played a villian in Enter the Dragon.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Whether based on fact or fiction, Cleveland DOES have the perception of being bad and dangerous. Look at the comments I posted above. Look at the "why is [fill in the city] so...." google search thread. This year has been particularly damaging. We have enough legitimate concern with violence to keep us in the spotlight. We really don't need this shite right now. IMO, the DCA should be all over this. DCA is all about creating a better perception. It is right up their alley.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Are you implying that City Hall was bribed? The Plain Dealer too? DCA? GCP? I could maybe buy into the idea of a hush up being coordinated from the get-go..... but not after Sheppers painted the false image of the City and the story made national headlines. What I might believe is that the truth of the story is somewhere inbetween Sheppers version and the Cleveland Scene version and the City has decided to leave it at that. His original version was discredited, and maybe they feel (for whatever reason) that it can do no good because, no matter how you tell the story, an out-of-towner got his a$$ kicked in downtown.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I fully understand the concept..... but the City, the DCA, etc have NO obligation to eat a poop sandwich so the Ranger players can save face..... not after the BS impression of our downtown they allowed the national media to run with

Best Movies Ever Made?
Actually, I find that overhyping a movie only has a negative effect. If my expectations are too high, the movie won't seem as good as it is. It seems that Animal House is indeed in most people's list of top comedies of all time. And it is highly quotable.... perhaps overplayed ad nauseam by a few. But you can't hold the movie responsible for the behavior of a few, sick twisted individuals. For if you do, then shouldn't we blame the whole movie fanbase? And if the whole fanbase is guilty, then isn't this an indictment of our film industry in general? I put it to you, AJ - isn't this an indictment of our entire American society? Well, you can do whatever you want to us, but we're not going to sit here and listen to you badmouth the United States of America!

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
So now that the Rangers have a "full understanding" (which they are apparently not sharing with the media), the team and Sheppers are "moving on" and consider the incident "done" and over with. So let's get this straight. The original story was that he was walking back to the hotel after grabbing some dinner (implying this happened around 7pm) and he was sucker punched by several young males for no apparent reason. Now, the incident occured while he was "out to dinner" at 2:30am with teammates AJ Pierzynski and Joe Nathan. Local reports are they were with a bunch of females at the bar....... errrrr, I mean restaraunt. All three are married. Nothing to see here...... except the spit all over the City's face. http://espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/story/_/id/9520066/texas-rangers-tanner-scheppers-call-cleveland-incident-done
