US Economy: News & Discussion
NY Post + current GMU professor (who specifically works in the Mercatus Center)..... call me skeptical. There are several ways to calculate unemployment and all are far from perfect. The fact remains that the calculation method has not changed.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I agree. Take the problem head on. While fights are unfortunate, the real problem at these events is the mob rush to see the fights when they start so they can record them on their cellphones...... which leads to more fights when that rush of kids intersects with people that don't take too kindly to being knocked out of the way

3-C Stereotypes Based on Google Auto-Complete
Well, I wasn't talking about actual metro size, which us UOers know all too well. I'm talking about perception. Cities that are percieved to be large, urban cities (whether they really are or not) are seen by much of America as dangerous, ghetto, etc. Cities like NYC, LA, SF, etc. have mystiques which override those connotations, of course. And when I say "urban", I don't necessarily mean urban in the sense we would use it here on this site. Just speculation from looking at the results.

I think in this type of survey, the cities which are percieved to be the bigger cities are going to get those negative assumptions

Cleveland: Retail News
It's been there.... perhaps under a different name.... since at least 2009-2010. I recall walking to a Cavs game back then and being surprised to notice it there. I want to say it was called something similar to The Executive's Den (aka 'The Euclid Ballet') on Marginal and I assumed it was the same owner

ColDay2013: Cincinnati
Cincy definitely has the best preservation of architecture in the State. Cleveland seems to tear down our stock - which is half the age - at twice the pace. With all of those hills, Cincy has no excuse not to be the fittest city in America. Sheesh...

I think you will have to re-create your relocation advice thread alaurice. Re-post your question there and then we will be able to point you in the right direction. I would suggest giving some ideas of what you did for fun in your previous locale(s). Chances are you can find something very comparable, if not identical, here in CLE. We could all list what we individually do for fun, but the 'different strokes for different folks' effect would make that a very far-ranging discussion. FWIW, I think I have plenty of fun but don't ever go to the movies and rarely do the festivals. It all depends on your idea of what fun is.....

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I get your point (I think), but it's low risk because they had to spend that money anyways. The new CBA requires each team to spend 90% of the cap limit and this signing brings us over that threshhold. In fact, it might allow us to rightfully stay under the 90% minimum because it is his max salary with incentives that goes into the calculation. So if they didn't sign Bynum, they would've had to sign some other FA (or two) and pretty much anyone of value has already been signed to another team. I know AK47 was on their radar, but he signed with the Nets. Considering he left $10mill in Minny to sign for $3mill in BK, the NBA is going to put a probe up the anus of that deal. Methinks there will be some dirty russian money found in that deal

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The latest I've heard is that the Cavs offer is two yrs at 12mill per. However, only 6mill is guaranteed in the first yr and the second year is a team option. To earn the full 12mill in yr one, he would basically have to play as he did two years ago. It's very heavy in incentives and it's still the most money on the table for him. I'm mixed on this. I don't really care for the guy but he is undeniably a very rare and proven commodity.

Franchise Re-location
In other news, Charlotte is building a new stadium in Uptown for its Triple A baseball team. I couldn't believe that the City was using such prime real estate for a minor league baseball team, but the word down there is that the new stadium will be major league caliber and that they will try to lure a major league team once the stadium is complete. Marlins?

Kyrie is doing wonders for his own and the team's brand this weekend. I suspect we will see several nationally televised games next season.... Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I am also concerned that Kyrie is hurt worse than he is letting on. If his ankle "flares up" after the All-Star weekend, then I will have to smdh. When he rolled his ankle, I immediately thought what was probably the first thing to go through his mind..... that he was going to miss his first All-Star game. Dion has been playing great as of late. His numbers haven't jumped, but his %'s have. He is taking better, smarter shots. He still needs to quit ticking off the refs...... I know he isn't getting all the calls he should, but pissing and moaning like he does is akin to picking a scab. He needs to accept that, as a rookie, he won't get half of the calls he deserves.

Moving to Cleveland... where to live???
Cleveland Heights is extremely diverse in just about every aspect - racially, religiously and economically - except politics as it is unabashedly liberal. The Fairmount Historic District is upper class..... Cedar-Fairmount is more mixed. I gave you shots of the historic district because Cedar-Fairmount flows right into it and it is a great area to ride a bike.... lots of side streets with beautiful scenery. You will find rentals in Cedar-Fairmount, not the historic district. Most of the rentals you might be interested in will be in Coventry, Overlook or Cedar-Fairmount, which are all within close proximity of the Clinic. Have you given any thought to a house. With your price range, I'd bet you could rent a decent house in the Cedar-Lee neighborhood. Some new apartments are going to be built there next year, but won't be done in time for you (too bad). The one thing CH lacks is "new".... which isn't a bad thing IMO. BTW, coming from Chicago, you would be surprised how relatively affordable those houses in the historic district can be.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I don't know many of those. Not really my type of people. But if that is your best guess, I'll defer to your informed judgment. I was more referring to my friends who prefer their space..... who prefer not to be in a joint that is shoulder-to-shoulder crowded..... who like to park their truck by the front door for free as opposed to paying $10 and then having to walk half a mile..... who are perfectly content to spend their Friday evenings at places like the Chesterland Tavern or the Eagle Club. Those types. The types that don't care about the color of your skin but tend to not care too much for you East Village, NYC types.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
^d'oh! The CHAGRIN River. The one that separates God's Country.... I mean Geagua County.... from the heathen filled Cuyahoga County ^^Easy there, Tigress ;) I didn't say there wouldn't be ANY local interest. I just was saying that I THINK people are OVERESTIMATING the local interest. I'm a surbanite too, BTW. Never lived in the City of Cleveland my whole life. All I can go by is the people I know and the people I know who listen to country music are not the types to frequent downtown..... and that's not because there isn't a country bar down there. I simply suspect that the joint's big draw will be from out of town folks and it will indeed help solicit more out of town folks to come in for a weekend to, among other things, visit the RROF, the aquarium, go to a sporting event, or some other reason.

Good for them. Us parents run our own rec leagues in South Euclid - Lyndhurst. It is a great community bonding experience. We even have travel teams and practices indoors during the winter (at the Euclid Sports Complex)

I agree with Surf that the franchise seems more than a bit cheesy a la the Cadillac Ranch. I also don't like the land use, but I think that was already solidified before this franchise was even signed. But I'm all for diversification and no one can argue with the fact that this brings something to downtown we don't have. That said, I think people are overestimating the local interest this will draw, mostly because the majority of locals who like Country enough to make a night of it, seldom cross I-80 or the Geauga River. But it will definitely appeal to our tourists from the more rural parts of the surrounding states (i.e. the ones you see in jeans shorts and timberlands taking photos in front of the guitars and other sights downtown).

Moving to Cleveland... where to live???
Here are links to some picture threads I did of the Cleveland Heights neighborhoods. The top three are probably along the lines of what you are looking for and are also the closest to the Clinic. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26394.0.html (Coventry) http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26396.0.html (Overlook) http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26397.0.html (Cedar-Fairmount) http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26398.0.html (Fairmount Historic District) http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26399.0.html (Cedar-Lee & Fairfax & Cain Park) http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26400.0.html (South Taylor & Severance Circle) http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26401.0.html (Superior Triangle & Cumberland & Mayfield Lee & Forest Hills) http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,26402.0.html (Inglewood Historic District & Center Mayfield & Noble Monticello)

Moving to Cleveland... where to live???
The most common complaint about safety in Downtown Cleveland I hear is from people who are afraid of panhandlers. I see plenty of panhandlers in Chicago, so chances are you will feel safe here if you feel safe there. Outside of fights when the clubs/bars let out at 2:00am, Downtown's crime is relatively few and far between. That said, I usually don't recommend Downtown to newcomers who aren't in their early 20's, although I suspect most on this board (especially those who live downtown) would disagree with my rationale. In all honesty, the rents are going to largely match the desirability. If you see an ad for a 3,000sq ft loft for $500/mo, you can take that as a clue that nobody wants to live there. There are no 'luxury lofts' in the east side neighborhoods the scary mary's are directing you away from. There are some places which are, for lack of a better term, on the "frontier"..... such as Circle East Townhomes that try to draw in Clinic employees. I wouldn't recommend that for newcomers. I would echo the recommendations to look into Cedar-Fairmount in Cleveland Heights, as well as Little Italy and University Circle. In fact, there is a building on Random Road in Little Italy which might be right up your alley (someone help me out with the name of the newer style buiding on Random). Uptown in University Circle http://uptowncleveland.com/ and the Alcazar in Cedar-Fairmount http://www.thealcazar.com/ are other possibilities. You also may want to look into Park Lane Villa in University Circle http://www.parklanevilla.com/. All of those options offer a good, safe place to live withing minutes of the Clinic (walking distance, in fact). Lakewood, Tremont and other areas west of the river are possibilities, but the commute time significantly increases.
