  1. The Board of Ed has approved the tax abatement on the Lee/Meadowbrook project. Apparently, Fran Mench was unable to convince them that building a new, modern apartment building with central air and indoor plumbing was going to steal tenants away from the City's other rental properties. Now it heads to City Council for their rubber stamp

A couple half-glass full notations after the first six games of the season..... - We are literally two jump shots (end of games against Bucks and Suns) away from being 4-2 - Our starting backcourt is averaging 40 points/gm - Even though they might not win much, this is an exciting team to watch play
  3. Mandel was the worst debater I've ever heard in a race for a major political seat. The worst. Usually, I can discern whether the debater is not all that bright or whether the debater simply thinks the audience is gullible and stupid. When it came to Mandel, I think it was both.
  4. Um... mi scuse, but Eurotrip is funny The answer to your question, though, is Major League II. Maybe its just because it is such a monumental drop off from the first film

There was a span in the late 1st and early 2nd during which it looked like the Bulls were playing a D-league team. I know it's cliche to say they got to all of the loose balls..... but I think the Bulls literally did get to every loose ball
  6. Are you implying that charter school teachers work harder and longer hours than public school teachers? I have friends who send there kids to charter schools and most are happy. I encourage charter school as an option. But I fret the butterfly effect which may ensue. More and more "involved" parents are sending their kids to charter schools, not because those schools are inherently better, but because it means their kids will be going to school with children of other "involved" parents. It removes those parents/kids from the public schools and consequently weakens the make-up of those public schools. The other potential consequence is that charter schools completely replace the public school system. Proponents of such an outcome advocate for a 'voucher' system so that parents can have school "choice." But here's what I see occuring. Parents would be granted a voucher for maybe $12,000/yr. They get to shop around. The best charter schools will cost $30,000/yr. If the parents "choose" to spend the extra out of pocket $$, then they can "choose" to send their kids to that school. Those schools would then have the extra money to buy the best facilities and hire the best teachers. Extra-curriculurs galore, as well. 2nd-tier charter schools would cost $20,000/yr. Not as much of a bite out of your pocket, but still a healthy sum you would have to come up with. The teachers and facilities would be good, but would be limited to those who couldn't get hired by the top-tier schools. This would continue all the way down to the bottom tier schools which would cost $12,000/yr, would struggle to hire and retain faculty year after year, would not have the money to properly maintain the buildings, and would not be able to offer any extra-curriculurs. The bottom tier schools would be flooded with students of "not involved" parents who won't or can't spend an extra dime to help get their kids a better education. This is how the private sector works. Rich people can and do buy the better products the poor just can't afford.
  7. Great idea for a thread CO. CF doesn't get enough photo love on this site. In terms of just parking your car and killing a day walking around, it is hard to beat Pretty sure that is a Belgian Malinois
  8. I just feel bad for the Heights' seniors that had to deal with the inconsistent application of the rules for 2 out of their 3 years playing varsity. Going forward, I would support a rule which would not give a secondary effect to teams not involved in a forfeited game. In that scenario, only the team who forfeits the game and the team it played against in that game would see a change in their computer points.
  9. I have a sister who teaches in Compton and she has made mention of the irate and irrational 'parents' she has to deal with...... yelling at her that "my son can say whatever he da#% well wants!" So then what can be done to make the administration more responsive? We spend all of this time bad-mouthing the teachers unions. Maybe it is time we look at the other side of the bargaining table for a massive reform in the way things work?
  10. Heights gets screwed again.... from the other side. But I'm happy for Mayfield. I think it is their first ever D1 appearance.
  11. I've never heard of that, but I'll take your word for it. Is that somehow unique to CMSD? Regardless, what do you do with the kids once you remove them from class? This gets back to my original point and actually is supportive of the arguments in favor of the levy. The district needs money, and lots of it, to deal with the problems it has..... problems which aren't going away no matter how you decide to deal with them
  12. First of all, who is "they"? And how are "they" somehow preventing teachers from enforcing the rules and following through on disciplining the students that cause problems? Specifically, such as...... ?

I heard all of Manhattan will be back on line by Saturday. The suburbs and coastline are another story
  14. That's exactly what I was suggesting. When I went to Heights, we had Taylor Academy and it seemed to work well. If you were a disruption, you were sent to a borderline juvy center for a semester or two until you showed improvement in behavoir and work ethic. This was a step beyond sending the kids to the basement classes for 'special' students.
  15. ^Correct ^^What do you do with the zero tolerance attitude? What is the punishment? Expulsion? Do you think this City will be better off if all of the kids who are causing trouble and not paying attention in school are suddenly set free on the City streets during the day unsupervised or with their parents in jail on "bad parenting" charges? My solution would be to build more John Hays and separate the good kids from the bad kids. Maybe even separate the kids that truly excel from the rest. Make them earn their spots in programs which can help them reach their potential. It's really just a small but very noticeable minority that need to be dealt with differently. It truly is sad that 20 kids in a classroom can't get a good education because the other 5 kids don't want one. Of course, the district needs $$$$$$$ to do anything like that. More money on a per capita basis than the schools which do have involved and interested parents. I fully support the levy and would vote for it if I could

  17. I don't think anyone is ignoring that plain truth. I hate that strawman argument. What can the CMSD do about it? What realistic, plausible, and pragmatic reform can be put in place by the CMSD or the City which will make people better and more responsible parents? The CMSD has to work with the hand they are dealt, and that includes heavy burdens that can only be managed through school reform, not fixed.
  18. There's really no clear cut way to handle this. It's too late to have a play-in game. If OHSAA were to follow their own rules, Heights would be in...... as much as that would suck for Mayfield. OHSAA decided to waive/ignore those rules, which lit a fire under Heights. You have to understand that it was the OHSAA's unwavering adherence to strict application of its rules which cost Heights a spot in the playoffs two years ago and the OHSAA denied their appeals, so Heights does have a legit argument here. The bottom line is that it is a bad situation for all involved and they are really just fighting about who has the right to lose to St. Ed's. But I do think that 8-2 Heights will give Ed's a better challenge than 6-4 Mayfield. Heights gave Ed's quite a scare in the playoffs last year. The problem is I think Ed's is better and Heights is not as compared to last year. Mayfield will/would get crushed by Ed's and I would feel fairly confident they would lose to Heights in a play-in game if one could be held.
  19. Cincy and Cleveland HS football showing well nationally - http://www.maxpreps.com/m/article.aspx?articleid=5f2269be-a289-43e0-908f-087cb7ab8064 On another note, this playoff controversy is a mess. Ed's has no idea who they are playing on Saturday

What a great feeling coming home from work to check on things and the Illuminating Co has trucks on my street :)
  21. The new D1 is going to be much smaller and inclusion will be determined by gender enrollment. Heights may have more students overall, but they have less boys than Iggy, Eds, and other all boys schools. Glenville would drop down as well. Only the mega public schools, like Mentor, would remain in DI iirc
  22. Heights just missed out. They couldn't make it in their region with a loss to a 6-3 Euclid team and Harding. The loss the Harding was not that surprising. They are pretty good this year. The loss the Euclid was disappointing. The team just didn't show up to play and got pushed around. Heights will be back in the mix next year. They lost too much from last year's senior class, including but not limited to their LT who signed with tOSU and their QB/DB who signed with Boston College. They will lose two more big-time athletes (Gibson and Laster) this year, but the overall depth of the senior class is not that great. They are built for a run next year with RB/LB Marcus Bagley, QB Taylor Jones, WR/DB Marcus McSheppard, and WR Dorean Hudson leading the way. Hopefully it will be a bit drier next year. It seemed that every game this year was played in wet conditions which obviously does not bode to well for Heights strength, which is and always has been speed. Someone also said to me (although I had not heard this) that Heights will be dropping to DII when the divisions are realigned.

Keeping in mind that we were playing one of the worst teams in the league which was missing arguably its two best players, that was a great way to open the season. A win is a win. We had pretty good control of that game except for the span in the 2nd half when the bench let the Wizards back in the game. I don't know how many of those we will see against the quality teams we will play, but I will say that this Cavs team is going to be exciting to watch. I think I finally get the logic of picking Waiters. With him and Kyrie on the court together, they are pretty much interchangeable between the 1 and the 2. It allows Dion to play to his strengths and it allows Kyrie to play some off the ball at different points in the game. They both looked great tonight. Kyrie did was Kyrie does. Waiters seemed to get to the basket at will. He might needs to work on his 'touch' around the rim, but he definitely can get to the rim..... which is more than half the battle IMO. Andy was wow. 9, 23, 9. He is the glue and keeps us going. Tristan complimented him nicely. I liked what I saw out of Tristan. He seemed a bit more physical and I will take 12, 10, 5, 2 from him any night.
  24. Be careful with those 'mold experts'...... they are in the business of selling VERY expensive remediation plans and EVERY home they inspect is in 'dire need' of remediation. Treat him like you would the window guy
  25. Before replacing the door, you might want to consider what you can do with the one already there (refinish, paint, replace glass, etc.) That's assuming it is a solid wood door. You are going to find that a quality, new wood door will cut into your retirement savings. I put a steel door on the front of my house and couldn't be more disappointed. Steel my arse..... my son's hot wheel falling down the front steps put a dent in it. This generally applies to many home renovations..... sometimes it is better to work with what you have then it is to buy something new. Food for thought....
