That's what I was mentioning above with the roof. I suppose such restrictions would only apply in historic districts and maybe some cookie-cutter McMansion neighborhoods (which I doubt Gramarye is buying into). I once lived in a historic district down south and there were even restrictions on changing the landscaping. We needed city approval just to remove a bush.

Tristan and Waiters are only busted picks if the alternatives picked below them prove to be better. Tristan will likely be judged based on how the Lithuanian kid Toronto picked right after him pans out this year. You have to judge a draft based on its relative strength. A lot of people thought the 2012 draft was going to be the second coming of 2003...... I would say it was one of the weakest drafts in recent memory. Those same people largely panned the 2011 draft, but I think that draft will, in hindsight, turn out to be much stronger than anticipated. Tristan should flirt with 10 boards/game this year. If he does that and shows some improvement on offense, I will be encouraged. I still expect him to grow into his a body quite a bit over the next few years so I think the best from him is still down the road. I'm not expecting much out of Waiters this year, but if Harrison Barnes really shows up in GS or Drummond starts tearing it up in Detroit, then people are going to groan about that pick.

^I think that would apply if you are planning on eliminating or changing a structural support? I don't think it would apply, for instance, if you are simply adding a wall to separate your rec room from the rest of your basement.... or if you are finishing an attic.

For most renovations that need a permit, you probably will hire a contractor to do the job anyway, right? The contractor would pull the permit. I don't know about Akron, but where I live, you need a permit to put on a roof, siding, build a deck, replace a driveway, but not to do interior repairs or renovations like finishing a basement, replacing flooring, or installing a new kitchen.

Season is supposed to start tonight (weather permitting). I actually think we are going to be a little worse this year. As much as the fanbase would get frustrated with Jamison and Parker, their leadership will be missed. We are also lacking in size a bit. I don't foresee a stellar rookie season from Waiters or a true breakout year for Tristan, but if I'm wrong on either of those fronts, then my forecast would change.

I have never bought a fixer-upper, but I plan to do so some day. I would focus on the 'bones' of the structure. Costmetic stuff (paint, holes in the wall, flooring, windows, ugly carpeting, etc) can be fixed over time. I would look at whether the floors are level..... whether there are any points that the foundation is sinking or has sunk, making parts of the house not level with the ground. Is there any signs of flooding/water damage in the basement? Any cracks in the foundation? What is the state of the electical and plumbing (i.e. does it need updating/replacement)? Are the walls plaster (and harder to work with/repair IMO)? Does it need a new roof and are there any neigborhood requirements (in terms of materials) which a new roof would need to meet? Does the wood underneath the roof need replacing? What about outside violations, such as broken pavement? A new roof and a new driveway could easily run you $20,000. Also, you shouldn't overlook what might be problematic in terms of landscaping, such as a huge oak tree which needs to come down.

Unknown callers
As I said when you raised this a few times in the current events threads, THE POLLSTERS ACCOUNT FOR THIS ISSUE in their adjustments and final projections. Regardless, you can usually gauge responsiveness and willingness to participate in surveys by gauging any enthusiasm gap. If there would be a bias or lean due to the polling organizations failing to account for your concern, then the lean is going to go to the more enthusiastic segment of society. Either way, not the answer you were looking for. I, personally, am probably different than many. Due to the 24/7 nature of my job, and the fact that I get calls I need to answer at any time of morning, day or night for immediate and urgent assistance, I can't ignore calls no matter whether the numbers showing on my caller ID are known or unknown. But if a live person is not on the line when I pick up, such as with an automated call or a robo-call in which the operator only picks up after you answer, I hang up immediately. For probably 90% of unknown callers, there is nobody on the line when I pick up.

While the easiest path to victory yesterday was for Gordon to hang on to that PERFECTLY thrown pass for the go ahead TD in the 4th quarter (might we be able to steal San Diego's equipment manager?), the old adage holds true..... to win in the NFL, you must first and foremost be able to do two things: (1) run the ball; and (2) stop the run. To do the former to a high degree, we need to let Trent get fully healthy (or at least as healthy as he can get this year following the surgeries) and we need our O-line to start run-blocking and opening holes in the 1st half. To do the latter to a high degree, we need Taylor and Rubin back clogging up the middle and generally making a mess of things...... and we could use some better play from our LBs of course. There is simply no excuse to let a finesse team like Indy have success in the run game even with their starter out and for us to not be able to gash them after NYJ ran it right down their throat the week before. Soft play on both sides of the ball lost the game for us yesterday. Terrible job of getting 'up' for the game. **Sidenote - I heard someone mention that Gordon had to 'battle the sun' on that drop. Indy had opened up the dome yesterday. How ironic given our discussions with putting a retractable roof on the stadium....

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Not sure what you mean considering the bucks are not bowl eligible. Or are you trying to say, since they are not bowl eligible, the BCS will have an asterisk year considering one of top teams is not competing? They can win their division, but are not eligible to play in the league championship game. Also, while they are not bowl eligible, they can still win the AP poll. Surely, they are not up there (this year) with the top few teams.... but they are clearly a top 10 team, the cream of the B10, and can beat any team if they show up with their A game. If they can improve their passsing offense and cut out the big plays given up on defense, they will be in it for the NC next year and probably the year after too

Ohio Congressional Redistricting / Gerrymandering
I would agree if our state constitution served the purpose of a constitution, which is to forbid the whims of the majority from having absolute control over the minority. However, with our constitution being mob-rule, capable of being amended at any time with a vote of more than 50% of electors who show up for any given election, your concerns don't really apply.

This might be one of those situation where there is no ideal 'cure' to a problem we undoubtedly have. The status quo is unacceptable. That said, I don't have a firm opinion on Issue 2 yet.

Then the Bengals might have scored, but would still have been down in need of either a defensive stand or an onside kick. Sheldon Brown's pick-6 was much more of a game changer if you look at one play. On more of a macro level, it was that the Browns offensive line, as the game went on, started to wear down the Bengals d-line. The game started out with the Bengals D-line pretty much dominating, but they seemed to fatigue after a few series and were getting blown off the ball by the end of the game. If Trent would've stayed healthy, he most likely would have taken over in the 4th

^I was only able to catch about 30 mins of it on the radio when leaving my last appt, so maybe I just caught it at a bad time for Mandel and a good time for Brown. I just couldn't believe the questions. Did no one pre-screen these morons? They sounded something like - "Senator Brown, you are a POS who spits on the American flag every morning, can you please explain how you live with yourself?"......... or "Senator Brown [fill in long monologue of *facts* you learned from Glen Beck this morning], can you tell the people of Ohio why you did that?" I was embarrassed for the candidates and our state.

^Kindergarten and 1st grade are not in the same building? That's odd. Most of the elementaries on the east side are Kindergarten and up. The 'socialization' issue is much bigger for parents that don't send their kids to daycare and that was why Deansheen was asking. We're talking about babies that spend all day either at home or shopping with mommy. They need a break from mommy just as much as mommy needs a break from them. Also, if you don't expose your kids to germs at a young age, like they are at daycare, it is a nightmare sending them to school at first because they pick up everything and have not built up any immunity. When we put my son in preschool, it seemed like he was sick for 3 straight months.

^Apparently, he has a very mild case. The initial specialist who saw him said he would be OK. The USC doctors disagreed. But every doctor since then has cleared him to play. Mild cases of SS are not uncommon at all in football players given the impacts they take week in and week out. I like the kid because he relentlessly gets after the QB and has a "nose for the ball." In basketball, the stat which translates best to the pro's is rebounding. If a player is good at rebounding in college, chances are he will be good in the pro's. In football, the same holds true for sacks. Ignoring this led to Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumerville, two guys who had 20+ sack seasons in college, slipping far past where they should have been drafted. Both were possession receivers with 10-year careers and nearly identical numbers: Brennan 132 rec, 4336 yds, 20 TDs Jurevicius 133 rec, 4119 yds, 29 TDs LaDanian Tomlinson and Jerome Bettis also had very similar career numbers, but that doesn't make them all that comparable. Jurevicius was a very big target. Almost like another tight end on the field. He was a matchup problem because of his size and scored a bunch of touchdowns on slants towards the corner of the endzone. Brennan was a dirtbag (I mean that in a good way) in that his jersey was always the dirtiest on the field at the end of the game. He would make some fantastic diving catches and was very sneaky in getting deep. I get that they both were reliable possession recievers, but I think the comparison ends there. Cooper can never hope to do what allowed Jurevicius to stay in the league as long as he did. Since his daughter is in my son's class, maybe I'll ask Joe his opinion ;)

We walked our son into pre-school slowly. Non-day care pre-schools usually run from approx 9am-1pm. At 2 1/2 yrs old, we sent him for 1 day per week. When he was 3, he went for 2 days. At 4, he was going 4 days a week. It made the transition to kindergarten at 5 much easier, I would think.

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel ran for US Senate.
NPR is airing a debate between Mandel and Brown. The audience seems to be about 50-50 and is very lively. The candidates are taking questions from the crowd. But the Mandel supporters are really trying (intentionally or not) to turn this into a campaign talking points match, avoiding any real substance. Brown is spending his time answering idiotic, falsely premised Mandel ad claims being regurgitated by the Madel supporters in the audience. What a shame. What has happened to our democracy? On top of that, the moderator has to keep reminding Joshy to answer the f'in question asked.

That's the guy. Von Miller type potential. I thought he held his own when Haden was out. Now that he won't be asked to cover the #1 WR, he can only look better. I can see the Brian Brennan comparison. Smaller, slippery slot reciever with great hands and toughness going over the middle. But I think you are stretching the white athlete - to - white athlete comparison a little think with Joe J.
