    ^We may very well be losing jobs on the whole. The economy is being reinvented. The assembly-line manufacturing has gone to China. High-skilled manufacturing and bio-medical engineering is growing. Sometimes you have to look beyond the numbers to understand why the overall picture is improving. I would suspect the biggest reason for increases in people employed is down-sizing in the public sector. Again, you can look at the raw numbers and say that things look bleak..... but that change should pay off in the long-term. If we ever do regionalize on a grander scale, the short-term pain will be enormous but the long-term gain should make the juice worth the squeeze.

  3. As happens every year, we will end up winning one of these games nobody gives us a chance in. It's the 'Any given Sunday (or Thursday)" effect of the NFL. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

    Again, the 14,300 were not jobs, but the number of people employed. Ahhh..... but it still doesn't quite add up for me. Cleveland lost 27,000 from its labor force between August 2011 and August 2012. I can believe that. There was a net change of -14,000 of people employed. I can believe that too. Yet we had a net positive growth of 9,000 "non-farm" jobs. This is what doesn't seem to jive, even if it is using a different albeit related metric. The only thing I can think of to explain this is either (a) there are literally thousands and thousands of jobs sitting unfilled in the area; or (b) the bls has redefined what constitutes a "farm" job by moving many which previously qualified into the "non-farm" job category. Do you have the numbers for "farm" job change?

    ^Then it might be useful for you to let us know what size it is. Impossible to know for sure from the picture, but it looks somehwere around a 19 (or the frame is from a road bike and it measured in centimeters?). And does the U-lock come with it?

    ^Don't put too much stock in those numbers (see a few pages back). If they are correct, then Cleveland lost more than 23,000 farm jobs over the last year. (-14,300 overall change, but a gain of 9,200 non-farm jobs over the same period???). I'm not sure we have 23,000 farm jobs to begin with.
  8. It's a critique of neither. It is simply adding two and two together given what I know of the board collective and the considerations which I anticipate will attach to the development when the status quo of the site chosen for the new medical school is taken into account. I am happy, but sad at the same time about this. I am excited that CWRU is likely to end up with a state-of-the-art medical school which will likely rival most any in the nation. But I hesitate to jump up and down because, as far as site placement is concerned, the old medical school can't be beat and the new medical school is going to dramatically alter how the medical school interacts with the campus and UH.

    I had an elderly gentleman breeze past me in the metroparks on one of those electronically assisted bikes. He was really moving on that thing. Kind of hurt my ego until I realized a few weeks later that it was one of those bikes. There are a few recommendations I would make to those people with straight bars. The easiest way to give yourself more versatility in your grip is to add bar ends. They not only allow you to change your wrist position during a long ride, but they also help climbing hills and working your upper body. The other thing that I have added to my newest bike is an adjustable stem. It allows me to widely adjust the angle my stem angle from -60 to 60 degrees. I set it lower for off-road ride and higher for more comfort rides. Very easy to adjust with one of those bike-tools. Both of these additions will give your bike some versatility which you lose without drop bars in terms of how you want to ride.

    I wish I would have been there an hour earlier when there was more light out, but you can still see the progress I noticed riding by today. Trees have been added to the perimeter. And the interior decor is.... ummmm..... fierce?

  16. ^That is going to be an Autozone. There was an older service center which was knocked down. No big loss or gain IMO. The smaller and mid-size shops at Severance will come and go. It's the anchor tenants which will decide its fate. It can probably afford to lose WalMart if it holds onto Home Depot and Dave's. Who knows... if they're creative in re-purposing the WalMart space, it could turn out to be addition by subtraction.

  18. Even during the warmer months, the option of closing off the stadium to the elements is a necessity for certain events. Promoters who book large concerts really fret about scheduling something in CBS because they lose their shirt if the concert has to be cancelled. I imagine exhibits face the same dilema.

  20. I always liked the idea as long as it it retractable. Fact is, I just never understood how its minimal use durign the year justified the maintenance costs. Putting on a roof would open up the venue for larger concerts that can't fit into the Q or Wolstein, and which promoters tend to shy away from booking here due to the potential catastrophe of a rainout. I could also see it being tied into CC and spurring development not only on the port's land to the north, but also increasing the need for more routine waterfront line service and other forms of public transportation heading to that part of downtown
  21. ^^Sheldon Brown and Brandon Jackson not playing, despite being healthy, is suspect for sure. Perhaps they were being disciplined for something. I'm not buying the coaches' reasons. On a related note, I've long desired for the coaches to take a look at Sheldon as a free safety and with the way Haag played yesterday, maybe that wish will come true. However, Skine does not appear ready to start. We basically lost the game because Cincy kept the chains moving by picking on him and then exploiting the defensive shift we had to make from there. The haters will say what they will say (because haters do what they do), but it essentially boiled down to that. Gotta give Cincy credit for executing that game plan, but this really was a game where one player (Joe Haden) would have made a world of difference. We also lost the "game of inches" yesterday..... particularly that sideline pass to Gresham extending Cincy's last drive in which his feet somehow managed to stay in bounds (at least that was what was called on the field and there was insufficient evidence to overturn the call) One of these games, the offense and the defense will get on the same page. But the positives from yesterday were undeniable. Weeden confirmed his NFL potential and showed great poise and leadership as the game progressed. Richardson gave the team that spark which really got the offense going. His two touchdowns were phenomenal. The offensive line improved as the game went along (against a very tough Cincy front 4) and the recievers actually held on to the ball more often than they dropped it.

    ^These concerns are why I suggested, for us "urban riders", to try and strike a balance between mountain bike and road bike. Here's what I ride most of the time no matter whether I am on a pot-hole filled street or a smooth country road - http://www.raleighusa.com/archive/2011-hybrid/misceo-11/. The tires are thick enough to take a beating from the city streets, but much thinner and lightweight than a true mountain bike. The front fork has some elements of a suspension, and puts the tire out in front of the bike more than a typical road bike, but is not weighed down by the springs attached to mountain bikes. X - specific to the bikes you have listed, I checked them out on-line. Both seem like quality bikes. I would consider either of them for riding on the towpath, in the metroparks, and on newly redone streets. But for riding around town, I just can't recommend anything with smaller than 32's for tires. Anything smaller and you might want to carry around an extra intertube and some tire shims in a seat bag. We do live in Cleveland after all and smooth riding is not something you can count on. JMO and I'm sure it is in the minority amongst bike enthusiasts. I do want to own a bike like one of those two one of these days, I just wouldn't own it as my main commuter.

    ^Just say no to target, wal-mart and toys-r-us for bike buying. You can find a bike at a decent price from a local dealer without buying one of those carbon-fiber frames north of $1000. Point is.... how can you know if it is a fad or not if you buy some heavy clunker with crappy components and a chain which won't stay on? At least check out your options first. Wait until the off-season and then go and scoop up a 2011 model from Pro-Cycle, Solon Bicycle, B&B, that place up on Van Aiken (name slips my mind at the moment) or some other local shop. Another option would be to look on Craigslist or garage sales for used bikes. If you have to go 'big-box', your best bet for better quality would be Dick's (Legacy Village has a lot of options) I suppose.

    I wouldn't recommend on-line purchasing..... mainly because the specs really don't tell you the geometry of the bike. Depending on the brand and design, bike sizes can be labeled the same but have a very different fit. A road bike is really something you should be fitted for by someone who knows what they are doing. If you do buy on-line, keep in mind that you can adjust the height of the bike to fit you much easier than you can adjust the reach (i.e. the cockpit). Most measurements focus on height, which I don't find very helpful. Also, the type of bike you want may depend on where you live. I have two bikes.... one has 48 tires and the other has 38 tires. Both are what would technically be described as hybrids, but the bike with the 48's is more of a mountain bike and the one with the 38's is more of what I would call a city bike. Neither are true road bikes. One of these days, I will get a super-light frame with 28's or 32's, but I would limit that to riding on smoother surfaces. The roads around me are just horrible and, due to traffic, I need to be able to jump up on the sidewalk or roll over some potholes if need be without worrying about bending a rim or getting a flat. I find the bike I have with 38's blends the best of both worlds for my purposes in that it is still light but it can take a pounding too. I ride mostly through the east-side of the city and inner-ring burbs where the pavement is busted up enough to make my i-pod skip ever so often
