Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Anyone and everyone can make an arrest for a felony..... including citizens if they witness it. These special police forces are empowered with the ability to issue misdemeanor tickets, which makes them different from a mall cop. They also follow through, via court appearances, etc, on all MD tickets they issue. But if they arrest for a felony, then Cleveland PD steps in and takes over the case

Absolutely. But, on the other hand, shocking the system by flooding the market with inventory far in excess of current demand might not be good for the overall economy or Main St

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I think you are judging the City on the Bexley park area, which isn't the best, but still is not comparable to the extreme north end (which has spread to the Princeton Blvd / Quarry Park / Grand Blvd neighborhood). But the Notre Dame college area is hardly the only "nice" area in the city. You have a very large and similar residential area north of Mayfield and south of Monticello roughly between Plainfield (the CH border west of Belvoir) and Professor (the Lyndhurst border east of Green) which is still "nice" despite this past weekend's incident.

JYP - you might want to slow down there with the prognastications. Something big may be happening with TC in the near future which will make you learn how nasty your foot can taste. We'll see..... CDM - our Downtown is a 'gasper'..... although dangerous, it gets off on the near-death experience Tower City's stragulation gives it. (And with that.... is it time again for a re-post of the PeterGriffin photo thread?)

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I'm guessing the far west suburban schools? I'm not so certain everything is alwight out there. I just talked to a guy who pulled his kids out of Cuyahoga Heights and moved to Geauga County. Another friend of mine complains about North Ridgeville. Berea ain't all peaches and ice cream. I'd recommend following the money if you want to find a private school esque environment in your public school system.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Let me preface this by saying I was in diapers when your sisters went to that "fine" school. But, as far back as I can remember...... yes, Brush was always known for fights, brawls, and even a full scale race riot in the 90's. Brass knuckes, bats, knives.... not at all uncommon to find in their trunks. When I went to HS, for some complex reasons, I could have went to either Brush or Heights. The decision was not hard for me or my parents (and it wasn't just limited to the fact that there were quite a few of the above mentioned wanna-be tough guys who wanted to kick my arse). Brush has always had its fair share of problems (given that its population consists and always has consisted of mostly blue-collar families) and it didn't have the elements of excellence (variety of AP programs, Arts, and cultural accolades) which Heights possessed. That said, it was and still is a "good middle class school"...... recently recognized, in fact, as one of the best in the country for black males. Where are class disruptions not becoming commonplace?

^Are you talking about loiterers..... or just people being out on the street after the bars close? I can see your point if you are referring to the issues with the young teens being down there who aren't even old enough to go in the clubs/bars. But I don't see it if you are simply referring to party goers enjoying some time on the street. As far as business being DOWN..... it is down in a lot of places. Regardless, Cleveland has this tendency to rotate hot spots anyways. The WHD might be down because it does not hold such a monopoly anymore on that type of environment with the continual rise of OC, Tremont, DS, LI, 4th, etc. I was in OC this weekend and can report that business is UP

Downtown Department Stores
Ahhh.... I see. It is 'disconnected' from downtown because it is connected to so many things downtown, within and not within the mixed use facility it is a major component of. Gotcha

Downtown Department Stores
I'm not "not getting" anything you are trying to sell. We'll just have to agree to disagree on about 98% of your points..,... especially when you continue to label The Avenue at Tower City as 'disconnected' despite that it is directly connected (through multiple traffic flow patterns) to one of the largest mixed use facilities in the region.... not to mention two large government employment centers.... two professional sports complexes..... two major transit hubs (at least what would be considered 'major' here in Ohio).... a brand new casino (soon to be two)..... two hotels.... no less than 5 large office buidlings..... and more

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
There really is no material difference in the different parts of South Euclid..... with the exception of the Cleveland border along Green Road, which has always been 'iffy' as far back as I can remember. It's a purely middle class city with little appeal other than location and bang-for-the-buck real estate. This incident is not part of a trend of any kind. The most recent murders in the City were this one committed by a non-resident, the one on Green road a few years back committed by a non-resident, and the one earlier this year on Princeton (son killing his father) committed by someone who should have been strictly medicated. I do get a kick out of the people that suggest that Brush HS is getting "rough"....... it always WAS rough. The only difference is the skin tone of the 'tough guys' has gotten a little darker. That doesn't mean they are any tougher than what they called "the Bomb Squad" in my day - a group of St. Gregs and St. Margaret Mary kids who graduated to Brush and would jump you in a heartbeat (sometimes with blunt objects) if they caught one of us from accross the Heights border alone.

US Economy: News & Discussion
^^Are the banks not free, under the free market system, to withhold property from the market in they feel it is in their best interest?

Governor John Kasich
Kasich is a hardhead..... but that appears to be a good thing because he has no issues with breaking party lines. It's almost like his ego won't let him be controlled by TPTB within the GOP. I find myself agreeing with him much, much more than I thought I would when he was elected. If polled, I would be on the "approve" side for as far as the job he is doing as Governor.

Downtown Department Stores
^^ a) You're assuming those store would be on Euclid Avenue if not in TC. I think you're wrong. JMO b) You ingore that large department stores and discount stores, such as TJMaxx, Walmart, KMart, Burlington also take significant business away from the imaginary stores that would be along Euclid, Superior, etc. I'd definitely rather have a collection of smaller shops than one large mega stores which sells itself as a one-stop-shop and undercuts all of those smaller stores right out of business. EDIT: ClevelandOhio - we are operating on similar wavelengths today

^Are you complaining about the crowd or just the lack of police presence? As for walking in the street, I personally think W6th should be closed to car traffic on Friday and Saturday night. I like seeing people walking in the street.

Downtown Department Stores
Sorry.... but I don't see a distinction in the street life sucking effect. Nothing happens in that 100 foot (est) walk from Public Square to Tower City that does not occur when you walked in the turnstyle at Higbees. That's just over-analyzing the situation. Your shopping indoors, off the street either way. I wasn't suggesting that it was preferrable to individual store street retail, just that it is preferrable compared to a department store. You also aren't quite as familiar as the locals with the connectivity of Tower City given the way you try to paint it. I also expect that connectivity to greatlyt improve with Phase II of the casino. I'll stand by my statement 100% without expanding it to suggest it stands for something it does not.

Give me Tower City every day of the week and twice on Sunday over any downtown department store. Three times on Sunday if it is a TJMaxx...

Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
If this goes through, I'm sure it would be worthy of its own thread..... but since its being mentioned here, I'm now wondering what consititutes "Playhouse Square"... does it have defined boundaries? I only ask because I never thought of anything west of 13th as being part of PHS
