Downtown Department Stores
Putting aside that this thread is not Cleveland specific, you are lacking the specifics to make an informed argument here. There would have to be a question of how MUCH subsidy a department store would want/demand to locate within Cleveland's CBD..... especially given how Higbee's folded (even after all the subsidizing we did to put that store in a prime position to succeed. You also don't know that City leaders have not reached out to various retailers about bringing a store to downtown only to recieve lukewarm interest in return. Point being, you don't know that "we" haven't already accepted that we are on the wrong list. Moreover, I don't know how you quantify the "cost of inaction" on this topic. Personally, if we are talking about subsidizing a TJ Maxx or KMart downtown.... I think the cost of action would be one of those situations in which the juice ain't worth the squeeze. Personally, I would much rather favor subsidizing walkable outdoor shopping and local businesses which visitors won't find in the suburb/exurb/rural area/or other city they drove in from than another drop in the hat Macy's.

Thanks..... to be clear, I think they are worthy of subsidies given the overall impact. However, I think it speaks volumes about a central business districts retail consumer base if a department store can be profitable without subsidies

A white yuppie type can 'keep it real' if they take their balls out of their wife's purse. I had forgot about Chris Rock's bit..... but I actually had these Chappelle skits in mind when I made that comment earlier (WARNING - comedy central approved profanity included):

What are those black glassy things? Purely decorative?.... or do they serve some kind of function such as a natural light well?

I wonder how many of those department stores are subsidized

US Economy: News & Discussion
Both consumer spending and consumer confidence greatly affect the economy on a whole. Efforts to manipulate either in a way that hurts the economy need to be exposed and thwarted. Similar criticisms can be and are made about distorting the truth the other way (i.e. the economy is doing better than it is)...... in fact, that is kind of the theme of this blog/thread

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
My car got ravaged through a year or two ago. I called the police, not because I necessarily wanted the property back which was taken (a flashlight and some change), but rather to make them aware of the issue and to document any pattern in the neighborhood. The cop shows up and just non-stop lobbies me about how there is little he can do to follow up..... not that I was asking him to do anything specific. While speaking with him, the guy from up the street comes down and says same thing happened to his truck that same night. The cop goes to look at his truck and then returns. I told him I indicated in my written report he had me filling out about the truck up the street. He got all huffy-puffy with me, saying that was none of my business and that the guy up the street didn't ask to report anything. I told him that I was sorry if it created additional paperwork for him, but don't dictate to me how to fill out my report and what is and is not relevant in my neighborhood. Total indifference to the petty crimes on that cop's part.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
It appears that a 65 year old woman was killed in her driveway in South Euclid over the weekend during the course of a robbery. This occured just north of the Giant Eagle on Mayfield. I drove right by this crime scene early Saturday morning and didn't even realize it. So sad. The police have a 17 year old in custody. If charged, I'm sure he will be tried as an adult. I would assume that there was no per se intent to kill, but felony murder charges should attach nonetheless and, if convicted, this kid and any accomplices will be going away for a looooooong time... http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/07/south_euclid_womans_death_call.html

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Sooner or later, kids like that run into someone who 'keeps it realer'.... They'll get what's coming to them if they keep it up. And I was really half-joking ClevelandOhio (bad humor I suppose from the whole Zimmerman mixed race debate). For informational purposes (i.e. "be on the lookout").... their race is relevant.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Since the race of the suspects is somehow relevant for the purposes of this thread, we may as well be as specific as possible.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
^Agreed. But I would not be dead set against it. Coach Scott might be someone who could actually get Bynum to grow up. Talent-wise, he is the best pure center int he game (that includes DHoward). Cavs played their first summer league game last night. Ugh. I'm trying to keep in mind that Kyrie was hurt just the day before and that certainly messed up the "game plan"...... but I was extremely underwhelmed by Waiters. Sure, you NEVER EVER want to take summer league stats and think they will translate to the regular season. Several players who have never made it off the NBA bench were summer league studs. And certain all-stars (Crhis Paul, Derrick Rose, etc.) struggled mightily in their first SL game. I seem to remember that Lebron only averaged around 13 pts during his one year of SL ball. But it was more than just his stats. Waiters seemed to get frustrated when his shots didn't fall and that affected his whole game. He stopped attacking the rim (never really got started on that). He slacked off on defense. He fatigued quickly and looked out of shape (definitely one of those athletes who has the potential to become fat once his playing days are over). His shot looks quirky. It takes a lot of effort from his legs and arms to get it off with his mechanics. Looks short (he's 6'2.5 without shoes) and doesn't have particularly long arms. He had some nice cross-overs and was able to split the double teams rather easily. He also had some good assists. But overall, I was disappointed with what I saw. Hopefully, it is just the first game jitters and lack of conditioning (due to him shutting down his pre-draft workouts). Zeller on the other hand looked like he is ready to contribute right away. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he starts all 82 games at center for us. Quality pick-up. Tristan looks like he added a little bit of muscle up top, which is what he needed. But I was hoping to see something new out of him, which I didn't.... except for perhaps a little more accuracy on his sweeping through the lane shot. Samardo looked like he really concentrated on getting in shape. Much trimmer and more muscular. Coming into camp out of shape is what got him in Coach Scott's doghouse last year.

Lakeview Terrace - Cleveland
I'd agree with this position.... although I also agree that somehow, someway Lakeview has got to go. I would sympathize with the residents, but when you are getting subsidized housing, then being forced to relocate is part of the bargain IMO. While spreading the burden out (i.e. what 327 said) is wise, there should be a focused effort to keep it away from the areas that have the most potential to benefit the City/County on a whole which in turn will benefit the poor who need this housing. Not only is this property on land which could be prime for redevelopment.... it hinders the growth of one of our most promising areas.

US Economy: News & Discussion
I saw this on a message board and fully expect this 'strategy' to spread to some extent between now and November... Hey everyone. Want to unelect Obama? Lets all stop spending for a couple months. Buy only what you need. Postpone any big purchase like a car till after the election. It would work. Pass it around.

Purse snatchers? I haven't heard of that since the 80s. Maybe they can do one of those dress an undercover up as an old lady bits... Or send Kyrie as Uncle Drew

Kyrie fractured a bone in his hand today in practice. Out 6-8 weeks. No summer league, but should be ready for training camp.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Wow. Considering how much H&H covet draft picks, this comes as a surprise. They probably thought that Washington (due to Baylor ties with RGIII) was going to take him in the 2nd if they didn't
-
Cleveland Browns Discussion
I'm hoping we get slotted ahead of Washington so we are not bluffed into using a 2nd rounder. I think, with his previous issues, Gordon is a 2nd round pick in the regular draft. The supplemental draft traditionally knocks you down a round from where you would otherwise be slotted, so 3rd round sounds about right for this kid.

Ways Ohio can become a high growth state.
^With the exception of the high-growth rate of Columbus, I don't see much of a difference between minimal gains and minimal losses amongst the other metros and cities which should affect advertising strategy one way or another. Those trends can change quickly Besides, the state is not going to focus on one area over another when it comes to spending to achieve high-growth. The cities which wish to individualize their campaigns can do so on their own.

Cleveland: Mayor Frank Jackson
Get rid of the admission tax altogether or just for these venues? What about HOB, the Toby Keith joint opening in FEB, and other similar non-locally owned music venues? What about sporting events? What does this have to do with Mayor Jackson "breathtaking incompetence"?..... he couldn't unilaterally eliminate the tax even if he wanted to.
