  1. Every state has cities..... my list highlights some of the unique assetts in and around those cities, but let's face it.... a "come visit Cleveland/Columbus/Cincy" ad is not going to draw much of a crowd

The law required them to pay. Even the one-sided article you posted acknowledged that the failure to collect was an oversight. You may disagree and view it as bad policy, but it is a far cry from any inflammatory language like "breathtaking incompetence"....... unless you were referring to the oversight which would at least allow an argument for the use of that descriptor. And while I love these types of venues and would welcome efforts to subsidize their operations, let's be realistic. They don't operate on quite the "guitar-string budgets" the author of the article relates..... at least not before they skim off the top the cash they collect for admissions and liquor.
  3. Let's start a list a Ohio's assets which would make for good advertising. I'll start with what I would highlight in any campaign: - Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Scenic Railway (one of the most visited nat'l parks in the country) - Cedar Point and King's Island (two amusement parks that compare with any around the globe) - Rock&Roll Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame - Lake Erie Islands - The 'Shoe, Jacobs Field (or whatever they call it now), and Great American Ballpark (great sports venues) - Small town charm (Chagrin Falls, Granville, Amish Country)

"Breathtaking incompetence"? I'd agree that it might not be the best policy, although I think I understand what the end goal is (which the op-ed sort of hints at) a negotiated resolution in which the City can collect some of what should have been paid and the business owners won't lose their shirt in the process.

Hubbard: Best player at Team USA camp, Kyrie Irving, is not on Team USA After beginning training camp with a couple of five-minute scrimmages that were open to the media, U.S. Olympic coach Mike Krzyzewski has pulled the curtain shut. The last four days have featured games divided into four 10-minute quarters between Team USA and the select team, which consists of younger NBA players. Media has not been allowed to watch. Although statistics have not been made available, the message from those who are Coach K-approved is that there has been one player who has consistently excelled – 20-year old Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers, a member of the select team. * * * * * “Kyrie Irving is a player that literally you could move from one court to the other court,” Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo said, referring to shooting drills that have the Olympic team and the select team on adjacent courts. “He’s that far advanced in terms of his talent, it appears. He’s made a good showing here. He had a terrific rookie season in the NBA and certainly he will be one of the leading candidates going forward.” http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2012/07/10/team-usa-camp-kyrie-irving/ Here's a little video which is linked in the article.... http://www.sheridanhoops.com/2012/07/09/sh-blog-kyrie-irving-schools-team-usa-guards/
  6. Felix Jones is a RB, not a WR. Dwayne Bowe is a WR, not a LB. And some of the LBs you have listed are only LBs in a 3-4 system and would be limited to playing DE in our system.... such as Kiwanuka, Phillips and Spencer. Cameron Wake I believe is exclusively a DE. Megatron is off the list. He signed a record deal with Detroit We cut Robiskie and he was last seen on Jax's bench
  7. ^I would agree, except I think recently awareness on "Issue" voting is becoming more prevalent. People might not know what they are voting for..... but they know IF they are voting "No on (fill in the issue number" or "Yes on (fill in issue number)". This past election, people generally didn't need to read the text of Issue 2..... which was a far cry from when we voted on the gay marriage ban which was worded so that you thought you were voting to illegalize all marriages if you didn't vote yes. I did a survey on this redistricting procedure amendment. The survey was testing out the effectiveness of arguments being planned by both sides. Amusing was the theme being tested by the opponents in which the argument is that since the proposed plan takes some cues from California, if the measure is passed then Ohio will turn into California. Has "California" become the new "New York City!"? (channeling the old Bullseye BBQ Sauce advertisement)
  8. Agreed. Regional loyalty is somewhat dilluted in the NBA, but we comparing apples to apples (Cleveland's NBA market vs. some other city's, like Houston's, NBA market). You're right in that it does often come down to one player to expand the team's market. When LBJ was here, it was quite common for the seats next to mine to be filled with folks from Columbus, WVa, Toledo, and other areas in the region. Point being, the potential is there..... whereas, it doesn't matter if the Browns had an LBJ equivalent.... half of Youngstown would still spit on a Brown and Orange flag in a heartbeat.
  9. Nate Silver is the first to break the big news.... Sources: Magic accidentally deal Dwight Howard to themselves in 26-team trade. I wasn't implying that the Cavs fanbase extends in any meaningful way into Pittsburgh or Buffalo or Cincy. But the lack of NBA teams in those towns means less competition for Youngstown, Erie, Columbus, etc.
  10. ^I would think the 'market' for the Cavs is comparable, if not superior, than the market for Houston. Houston splits Texas with Dallas and SA and has NOLA directly to its east. The Cavs actually have a very large market to tap into with no teams in Pittsburgh, Buffalo, or Cincinnati. Of course, with the NBA season being played between November and April, other 'factors' come into play. Chicago has never had much luck with NBA free agents either. They have gone hard after Kobe, McGrady, Duncan, Lebron, etc. only to come up empty handed. Boozer might be their biggest signing I can think of and he was largely thought of as 3rd tier in his free agent class. I just don't know what can be done to prevent NBA players from preferring to spend their winters in Miami or LA...
  11. Cool. It matches the Mayfield Road lofts sign that has been on the other side of the tracks for about 5 years...

^Luke Walton will likely get shipped off to Orlando as part of the deal. And IF Humphries contract would only be guaranteed for one year, then he becomes a very valuable assett at the trade deadline because it could be treated as an expiring contract. Throw in the $3mill cash and the Nets' 2013 1st rounder we are supposed to recieve as 'sweeteners' and it makes sense. It's not a home-run deal, but it makes sense for us. Other pieces coming our way (just to make the numbers line up per the CBA) may be Quentin Richardson and/or Sundiata Gaines..... neither of these guys would be a major piece for us next season What were you hoping we would do with the cap space anyways? Some of the contracts being passed out this off-season are baffling. Ryan Anderson just signed for something around 9mill per year. Landry Fields got big money from Toronto. Roy Hibbert got a max contract offer from Portland. Screw that. I'd rather use our cap flexibility in trades, accumulating extra draft picks along the way.
  13. This should throw some fuel on the fire re the conspiracy theories about the Bejing Olympic "Redeem Team".... Assuming Dwight Howard ends up in Brooklyn or LA..... that would mean that the entire roster from that entire roster (save for two washed-up players in Michael Redd and Tayshaun Prince) all now play in the four most desirable markets for NBA players - NYC, LA, Chicago, and Miami LBJ, Wade, Bosh - Miami Kobe, CP3, (Howard) - LA Melo, Kidd, DWilliams, (Howard) - NYC Boozer - Chicago
  14. Call it Rapid Rail instead of Rapid Transit...... problem solved (if there really is a problem to begin with)

In other news, reports have Andrew Bynum listing Cleveland, Dallas, and Houston as his preferred destinations when his contract is up at the end of this year. Don't read too much into it, as it is probably a strategic "leak" to get the Lakers to pony up the $$. But, regardless, it's nice to finally be put on one of those exclusive lists :)

He is.... and for a guy who averaged a double-double, it says a lot that he has virtually no interest around the league. Ever since coming out of high school, he has been view as a selfish player and no team he has ever played on has been any good. The reason for the one year deal is that the Cavs don't really want him. He's probably seen as a decent big-man filler for the roster, but the Cavs are in the talks for whatever 'sweetener' they can get. Most likely a first round draft pick. Problem is that Orlando wants all of the first rounders the Nets can offer. The idea has been tossed out there that the Nets would send Marshon Brooks either to us in lieu of a draft pick or to another team which would then send us their pick. Humphries has to be part of the deal so that the salaries match up for Brooklyn. Due to their current cap inflexibility, they can't absorb Dwight's salary without sending out a combination of salaries within a certain range of Dwight's. Doesn't sound likely at this point, for the reason Smith just pointed out. Very unlikely the Cavs take on Humphries for 4 years at the money he wants.

Everybody OK with a 1yr rental of Mr. Kardashian?

Wonderful visual diversity! Good job Clueless. The mansions are definitely Bratenahl.... betweeen 140th and Eddy Rd to be exact, I believe. The marina photographed is Newport Harbor, which right next to the Shoreby Club. There is a great view of downtown from Hanna beach at the end of those docks.
  19. Issue 2 probably nixed this possibility. If anyone's ever heard Dennis Leary's skit on bicycle cops, that's pretty much how most officers view that particular duty. Walking a beat is even less popular of an idea. Issue 2? How so? Seems people still have a skewed view of collective bargaining rights. Scheduling and assignments always has and always will be a management right. Heights already has bike and foot partrols anyways. And if Guliani could do it in NYC with that union, I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem in Ohio
  20. He wasn't killed. Took one right in the gut and was out of commission for the better part of 6 months, but lived. It sounds like you are suggesting that the city would be better served with a larger presence in the Detective Bureau (tracking down criminals) at the expense of the patrol division. I disagree. If I was Safety Director, my priority would be on a Rudy Guliani type order-maintenance policing. I would narrow the scope and increase the frequency of geographical patrols. In appropriate settings (Coventry, Cedar-Lee, Cedar-Fairmount, Noble, etc), I would take the officers out of the cars and put them on foot patrol. They would get to know the residents, business owners, friendly frequenters, and unfriendly frequenters. This would be my philosophy in any walkable areas of any city. CH does this about as well as any ciity in the area, which is why it has maintained despite the challenges of being an inner-ring east side city which was originally designed for people of all demographics.
  21. ^Back in the 80's, one of my best friend's dad was shot for pulling a guy over for crossing parking lanes at Severance (those old enough might remember the story). Turns out the guy was wanted in several states. Point being, you never know what you are going to roll up on when you make a traffic stop.
  22. CHPD has always placed a great emphasis on 'street presence.' You can't go a few blocks in CH without seeing a cop. That pisses people off, but is beneficial in the greater scheme of things. Just think of the expense the City incurs by allowing their officers to take their cruisers home if they agree to park them on a city street outside their house. Each cruiser that does that is one less cruiser at the station for the next shift. causing the city to buy more cruisers. That is just one small example, but goes to show where the emphasis lies. Regarding the idea of limiting attendance at public events, I thought the idea of charging an admission at the Coventry Street Fair was vastly superior to shutting the thing down. I guarantee that 99% of the troublemakers would never have made the trip into CH had the tweet, facebook post, or whatever drew them there said they had to pay $5 to have their 'fun'. Obviously, the Shaker fireworks would be more difficult to limit/control admission. But shutting these events down is only going to cause the problems to spread. People will just travel further east or west to see them on the 4th. I can make a personal recommendation though.... I had a great time watching the Shaker fireworks without incident at the U.S. lower campus athletic fields. Great view from there and the crowd was light and pleasant. I don't think there is much you can do to contain the running mobs..... I was just pointing out that the comments I see on this incident and the one in CH last year makes it seem like that 'effect' of the fight causes more problems and fears than the fight itself..... and, in turn, it causes more fights to occur.

Not really. Strength in numbers, my man. Plus, the residential tax bases of those communities are still stronger than Cleveland as a whole. And think about the money they would save by not having to pay their own mayor, council members, police chief, fire chief, building commissioner, service department, law department, etc, etc, etc. The list could go on and on. We have a thread on this topic if you want to learn more.
  24. ^^What's the source of that info? I can tell you that crime rates rarely fluctuate (both up and down) to that degree from year to year. The rise in Burglary is not so outrageous as to call it into serious doubt, but the rise in Larceny and the drop in vehicle theft is very hard to believe. Also, are those numbers limited to convictions, or do they encompass all arrests or maybe even all complaints even if an arrest was not made? ^I hear your concerns C17..... but let me try to soften them a bit as far as these two communities being "overrun" by criminals. How many of the arrests at the Coventry street fair last year were CH residents? How many of the arrests made at the Shaker fireworks this year were Shaker residents? It just seems to me that the problem is not so much SH and CH, but their proximity to areas of Cleveland and East Cleveland which (especially in Shaker with the rapid) and the use of social media which causes an influx of non-residents who don't give a crap about the city into the major crowd gathering events. EDIT (I see that you made that point yourself.... sorry to jump the gun) From these two events, it is apparent that there needs to be some kind of law against kids who recklessly run to go see fights. It seems at both the fireworks show and the coventry street fair there was more fear created by the rushing mob (school cafeteria mentality) than the fistfights themselves. I do know a few CH cops who would take serious issue with your remarks about their priorities.
