Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Do you mean once you cross over Mayfield (heading north) at Coventry? The housing between Mayfield/Coventry/Superior (NW of May-Lee) is definitely lacking in the maintenance dept. That was the area I was talking about above. Otherwise, I have no idea what you are basing that "clear difference" on. The houses in the Cumberland neighborhood (SW of May-Lee) are fairly impeccable. Same goes for Forest Hills (NE of May-Lee). The quadrant SE of the intersection is fairly bland, but you wouldn't notice any of those houses going east on Mayfield because they are behind Park Synagogue, St. Constantines, etc.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
By looking at the demographics in a census report, of course........ To be fair, it is not far from what is AND ALWAYS WAS the roughest part of CH...... the Jets, Superior Triangle, whatever you want to call it. In other words, it always was a bit rough around at least one edge. The rest of the surrounding area is just fine...... which is subjective, but let's just say it's not any worse (and in many ways better) than it has been in my approx. 30 years living close by

I don't think that is what he meant by "rough"

The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
I read the article. I wouldn't say he "trashed" the City. It comes accross as exactly what it is...... an article written by an ex-pat who returned looking hopelessly for some specific points of nostalgia from the late 70's and failed to notice all of the new momentum. The fact that he said the City was still 'thriving' during perhaps its most turmoil filled years (late 70's) when everything was going downhill in a hurry certainly made me skeptical of the rest of the article.

Exploring Cleveland
I don't find the photos offensive, but the thread should probably be retitled. Not much of "Cleveland" in here. Appears that the shots are of East Cleveland, with the exception of maybe 1 or 2. I could be wrong, but the shots I recognize are East Cleveland, which unless some drastic annexation occurs is a lost cause.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
So my brother has a new Marin bike. Fairly nice. He had to go to something at the Mayfield-Lee intersection yesterday, was in a rush, and couldn't find a place to tie down his bike with the chain he had. He decided to use the chain to lock the tires as he wasn't going to be inside long. He comes out of the building and there is a large crowd gathered on the sidewalk with cars stopped. Some kid is laying on the concrete with a concussion like symptoms and road rash on his face and body. Lucky for the kid, my brother found it amusing and did not call the cops (would have been attempted grand theft given the value). He said he thinks the concrete already handed out the kid's sentence. Why does this story remind me of that commercial from Robocop? :)

^^Is Little Italy on a separate tract from UC? If yes, then what were the numbers there? If not, the UC numbers would seem low, no?

Pet Peeves!
Rob, i can understand you not wanting people throwing their poop bags in your trash cans....... but scrubbing the can with bleach because it was infultrated by a plastic bag containing doggie dookie? A little extreme if you ask me. It is, after all, a trash can. They aren't supposed to smell like roses

Pet Peeves!
When stayed with a friend in Hoboken, NJ, we decided to walk to a nearby bar and I had never seen so many 'landmines' on the sidewalks. Literally every five feet there was another pile. This brings to mind another pet peeve of mine. CHANGE YOUR KID'S DIRTY DIAPER. I don't get people who let their kid walk around so full of piss and crap that it is nearly dragging on the ground. Mind the blue line, folks!

In that situation, all things being equal, the school would have just cause to terminate the employment relationship.

Cleveland: UO "neighborhood score" rating system
"Walkability" should have a defined radius. I would put it at 1 mile (which is what I believe walkscore uses). Access to public transportation has to be a big factor I would assign the highest points as far as amenities for walkability to necessities, such as grocery store and pharmacy. Points should be slightly lower for things that appeal to everyone, albeit not a 'necessity', like the library, parks, a movie theatre, 24 hour businesses, dry cleaners/laundrymats. Points should then be slightly lower for perks, such as dining, coffee shops, entertainment (pubs, movie theatres), and general retail. I would also give something for foot traffic, police patrol, diversity (people, businesses, and residences). I've said it before, but using the above criteria, Cedar-Lee might be the most balances neighborhood IMHO. It has a little bit of everything (including a 24 hour CVS/pharmacy) and not too much of anything.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
We'll have to wait and see if we have a 'viable downfield threat'. Hard to tell when your QB can't throw it much farther than 25 yards with any velocity. If hit in stride, I think both Cribbs and MoMass can take it to the house. And, speaking of adding a downfield threat, we did select the fastest WR in the draft (Travis Benjamin). If AJ was in this year's draft, I think H&H would have thought long and hard about staying at 4 and drafting him as opposed to moving up to take Richardson. He was their pick last year if still on the board. They obviously did not feel the same way about Blackmon and outside of him I don't know if there was a #1 WR in this draft.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
When did I say the Browns had a "great" draft? When did I say the Bengals had a lousy draft? "Most" media outlets have given the Browns fairly average marks (B's and C's). Personally, I'd probably give them a solid B. My only really negative point about the Bengals draft (which I posted in the Bengals thread) was that they passed on DeCastro. I'm kind of mad we passed on him too. But we obviously weren't targeting a guard. The Bengals took one a few picks later. I don't think the Steelers hesitated for one second when he somehow was still on the board when they picked. If Zeitler and the DT you got with the extra 3rd rounder you picked up in the trade down turn out to be > than DeCastro, I'd be surprised. That said, I expect Zeitler to be a solid starter. But I expect DeCastro to be a perennial all-pro.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
Burict dropped out of the draft because of character concerns, which would have been overlooked but for the fact that he ran slower than any scout could justify for an NFL linebacker. 40 yd dash times at the combine were 4.93 and 5.10. That is fairly average speed..... for a 300 lb defensive tackle. Unless those times were totally out of whack for some reason, I can see only two possibilities for him at the next level - kickoff return team and goal-line defense.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Sorry, I'm not going bite on the insult and return it. If I'm posting here, I obviously still care about the team. Some part of me always will. Perhaps its the memory of being a boy. But my passions were stomped on by the team leaving, it winning a championship five years later in a different city and under another name, and enduring 22 years of futility here. If I lived with a woman who treated me that way, all my friends would be urging me to dump her. As a boy, I once cared very deeply for the Browns, maybe more than you'll believe I could. But I'm now 45 and time has taught me they are just a machine-like business, and one that isn't very good at what it does. I can't predict the future, but I find it difficult I will ever feel about the Browns like I did, including getting on a bandwagon like the ones I once rode. For one, I haven't been a boy in a very long time. And two, I can't get emotionally invested in something that isn't emotionally invested in me. Winning doesn't last. Players don't last. And even teams don't last. I have learned that, to put my emotions into something so shallow and fleeting as a pro sports team is to invite only disappointment, not joy. It would be nice to be a boy again and fall in love with in a pro sports team, but l just can't see me giving my heart to that bitch again. Didn't mean for you to take my friendly ribbing as an insult. I suppose I can somewhat sympathize because I have taken the same approach to the Indians. However, my reasons for doing that is more my general loss of interest in baseball and the completely f'd up state of the MLB (when will Masterson be signing with the yankees?) than anything to do with the organization.

US Economy: News & Discussion
^^I agree, but not when the economic intervention is nothing more than reattaching the car window with duct tape. The housing bubble got us into a bind. The bubble is deflating as it should and all we keep hearing about from the talking heads is that we need to reinflate it because 'that is the way it has always been done'

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Well..... first off, I should have said probation violations. My bad. I was thinking more in terms of when a judge orders probation and suspends the jail sentence. Judges have to make that call all the time. They have to judge who will be a danger if not locked up and when our tax dollars should be saved. And second, I don't see how you can blame a teacher or indict his/her techniques when/if a student does not graduate high school. Especially if the failure to graduate is due to the inability to pass a basic proficiency test. In those situations, the student is primarily to blame, with the parents coming in a close second, the entire school system/community a very distant third and one individual teacher who maybe had the student for one class one year bringing up the rear.
