US Economy: News & Discussion
It will be interesting to see what/if anything comes out on this. I noticed this morning this info was already being buried in many MSM sites. Just like most of the other stuff about the banks and the FED has been. One day headline and no need to discusses it again. Ahhhh.... the good ole "MSM" acronym and accompanying conspiracy talk. This explains a lot.... and I was always wondering "why all the glee?"

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I would be all over the SF/Harbough suck for luck conspiracy, but then they ended up using a high pick on a QB this year (Kaepernick). But playing for a low level team is not what I find amusing about Braylon going to SF...

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
Well that didn't take long. In letters exchanged today by both sides, it couldn't be any clearer that it is all about posturing for the campaign and there is very little desire to have GOOD FAITH negotiations. We Are Ohio feels that it has the bear by the tail, and Kasich and Co are merely looking for campaign ad material.

No need to email him pics from out of town, just tell him to replicate Tony Brush Park in the downtown area. Ideally, it would be very near other attractions which is what makes TPB so great. It has the playground, a small pavillion, picnic tables, an urban farm/garden, and a decent yet not overly expansive greenspace. Exactly what Downtown needs.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
There's a catch, of course. Kasich and Co will insist a deal be in place before any vote on repeal occurs. The unions on the other hand, will probably insist upon repeal before they start talking. And I'm sure the national interests are getting involved with the GOP wanting it resolved and the Dems wanting it to go to referendum. The Dems, frankly, don't have anything to lose and will only gain support from otherwise consistently conservative voters (especially from the safety force community)

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
A little bit of that. But it probably more is about getting some good campaign material. While I think you should never refuse a sit-down, which is what I think the unions will do, the only way to do this is to start from scratch. The bill is so flush with foul intentions, even the provisions that will be up for discusiion will need to be rewritten. And you have a couple deal breakers on both sides, involving merit pay for teachers and seniority protection for all public employees. The merit pay issue is a tricky one and they may be able to fracture off the safety forces if that was their main target. But the seniority issue is not something the unions will budge on, mainly the preference given in layoffs and RIFs. So... point is, I think it may be a bit of an empty invitation. I think it is going to be stupid of the unions to turn it down and that will give Kasich the material he wants, but let's face it... looks like we are in for a bitter battle.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
Any move to LA would in all likelihood simply involve a sale of the franchise for a record setting price tag. If all he cares about is money, then I definitely wouldn't give him the justification.

I thought it was in one of their recommendations. Granted that doesnt mean it will be implemented as the funding is opaque at best right now. I can't imagine, in the larger scheme of things, a new playground (even one as nice as the LI playground) would be a budget buster. Especially given the fact that you can usually get volunteers (i.e. the community) to perform the labor on these types of projects.

^Double edged sword, my man. Do that and the Bengals might be in LA before you know it in that fancy new $1.2 billion stadium they just approved. And the NFL would call it justified.

I meant the warehouse, it's just for some reason I was picturing it to the west of the FC. Thanks. It's a buffer zone I suppose.... but I had held out some small smidgen of hope that the 'lost triangle' would gentrify with spill over from UC. Oh well...

^I think you also have a unique sampling from a 'mommy board'. Not saying anything bad about the participants, but I think those boards tend to attract more 'like minded' individuals who more typically really want that suburban comfort zone. Not knocking it at all, I live in the suburbs and find it best for my family. As far as a playground, I can't tell you how much more appealing a family night out in Little Italy is with the new park there. When we have our neices and nephews in town, we typically go down there with them and our son to enjoy the playground, the atmosphere and, of course, some Presti's. I was really hoping that the City would consider a playground for one component of the Group Plan.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
The PD got under my skin with this one. In an online poll of possible teams up for elimination if the NBA decides to contract, they listed the Cavs as one of the five options. Joining them were Sacramento, NOLA, Charlotte, and Memphis. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, Starting Blocks?!?!? What the H-E-double hockey sticks were you thinking?!?!? The fan support for the Cavs is outstanding. Sure, it varies with team success and I do expect attendance to be down this year, but that is the case with virtually every market. The Cavs have an exceptionally large market considering there is no team in Cincy, Pittsburgh or Buffalo. As bad as they were last year, their TV ratings were still up there. Why include them, but not the Bucks.... or the f'in Clippers. Makes no sense whatsoever. If contraction comes, there will easily be 10-15 teams on the chopping block before Stern even considers the Cavs. http://www.cleveland.com/ohio-sports-blog/index.ssf/2011/08/nba_lockout_david_stern_sugges.html

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Juding by populations trends and property values in Cleveland Heights vs. Solon, I'm not speaking for myself. I was responding to your last sentence.... about people who just stop trying to make their community a better place to live. Sure, the inner ring has more challenges (as do all non-white picket fence communities that have any sense of density and urbanity). But don't suggest that there aren't people here who care about their neighborhoods. That is the view from beyond the 271 loop, but it is not reality. You should let the students at Heights and Shaker know you're giving them a nod when they apply to Hts121 University. The accredited colleges and universities around the country - particularly in the region - do give preferential treatment to certain districts (and to be fair, Shaker is one of them...but so is Solon). In terms of what? Are you saying a C student at Solon will recieve preferential treatment over a C student from Heights? Perhaps, but I would guess that has more to do with the college simply guessing that the financial aid needs of that student would be far less than any other factor. Personally, I would frown upon a student who had a silver spoon in his/her mouth and still only managed a C average. As for top level students, I would definitely disagree. The top students from the worst districts usually have their pick of schools. The top students from Solon and the private schools probably not so much because there are simply way more 'top' students from those systems and, like I said above, colleges like to spread their demographics as much as possible. For example, you may have 10 Solon student with 4.0 gpa's and 1500 on the SAT and 2 kids from Heights with the same resume. If all of those student apply to Harvard, I would bet that Harvard takes both Heights kids before they take all 10 students from Solon..... even though every student has identical credentials on paper.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
^Speak for yourself, champ. BTW, we get our fair share of exurbanites too who are 'sick' of living out there. ^^That really depends on the college. Personally, I will take the straight A student from Heights or Shaker over the the straight A student from Solon. IMO, those A's speak a great deal towards the student's discipline and focus when coming out of a school system that does not have the resources to hold the student's hand along the way. Of course, it's not so black and white and there would be various factors to consider, but the more obstacles that were overcome the more impressive the application is going to be. Plus, the really top colleges will only take a certain amount of students from each district. IIRC, there was a big controversy at Heights my senoir year because they decided to award valedictorian to the student who didn't get into Harvard because of the numbers game (i.e. Harvard had already taken their quota from Heights ahead of her).

Shaker Heights HS used to be 'one of the best in the country'. I don't think Cleveland Heights High ever held that distinction.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I like Solon. More importantly, I tend to like Solon people. They don't seem as 'scared of their own shadow' as a lot of folks from the outer-ring. I would consider living there if it wasn't so detached from everything.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Here are my notes from the game last night: It really wasn't a good game to judge the running game because the Packers are so stout against it (particularly with Raji in the middle) and they were stacking the box. The jury is out on Marecic as a fullback, but I can pretty much guarantee he will be an impact special teams player at the very least. Buster Scrine is a future starter and definitely should be in the lead for the nickleback role this year. He looked really good covering the slot and seems to have that same passion for the game that Haden does. Anybody catch Little absolutely laying out that DL near the sideline? This guy has some Hines Ward in him in terms of toughness at the WR position. McCoy is the offensive line's best friend with his footwork within the pocket during pass protection. He makes there job a lot easier with his instincts to keep the pocket formed around him. D Jackson is still going to make a lot of tackles, but I would like to see them closer to the line of scrimmage. Titus Brown is very intriguing as a second option at MLB. He seems like he needs to get in better shape, but he has all the tools it appears (and a mouth full of gold teeth to boot). The TE group is unbelievably good and athletic. It would be interesting to see all four split out wide in the red zone. Shaefering should play a lot in this system. He was very disruptive and it didn't seem like any of the Packers could hold their block on him. Taylor and Rubin will need plenty of breathers. My biggest concern might actually be at DE. I didn't care much for what i saw out of Mitchell and Sheard. Mitchell looks like he lacks the athleticism and lower body bulk to be a real impact player, but I can't say that for sure as the sample size is so small. Sheard did not look comfortable and was losing the battle on most plays. Why the hell is he starting in a 4 pt stance..... that makes no sense for the weak side DE If Mike Adams is our starting FS, we will know the spot in the secondary most teams will target. He is a dime defense player, nothing more. B Jackson is a nice change of pace back to bring in for Hillis on occasion. As mentioned above, nothing really to go on from last night for Hillis and the running game. If McCoy keeps playing like that, then things will open up in the running game much more because the defense will be forced back on their heels. Norwood should serve as a significant upgrade over Stuckey. LJ Castille is a physical specimen. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he made the team even though the numbers game at receiver is tough - MoMass, Robo, Cribbs, Little, Norwood, and probably room for one more as long as they don't keep Alex Smith and count Evan Moore as a WR. I think it comes down to Castille and Hagerty. Auston English showed a little something and could make the team. Typically, aside from special teams players (Ventrone, etc) and the QB, only one or two of the players you see playing in the 4th quarter of these games actually make the team.

I've killed a day with my son downtown on several occassions. Nothing like the father-son experience of going to an MLB game. My boy can spend hours at the science center. He can spend a good amount of time watching the trains and boats. Lunch fits in there at some point. Sometimes there is some interesting things gong on at the port. And now, looking at all the construction sites can make any boy's eyes widen. Looking forward to the addition of the aquarium.

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
The Court of Common Pleas, the Court of Appeals, Probate Court, Domestic Relations Court, the Clerk of Courts, etc. will be staying in the Justice Center and the Old County Courthouse. The Juvenile Court just built a new home. The Sherriff obviously has to stay around the jail. Are MetroHealth employees considered County employees? If so, they would not be part of the consolidation. One of the big ones I can think of that is not already in the County Admin Building is the Board of Elections. If that office was consolidated, that would open up a very intriguing corner at Euclid and 30th.

US Economy: News & Discussion
You'll be glad to know RnR that tonight is pizza night at my house. And, no, it ain't gonna be Papa John's or Pizza Hut. We (translation - the wife) make our own doe and chop up all the toppings. We usually make two pizzas, one with cheese and the other without. I honestly think the whole process takes less time than waiting for delivery. And the result is way, way better. On the other hand, the wife experimented last week trying to make ravioli from scratch and that was a fail.... but I suppose it was her first try. Bringing this more back on topic, I see your point and it is well taken. Of course, you could further the analysis by saying that gardening is becoming a lost art among our generation. Growing your own herbs and veggies is easier than people think.
