US Economy: News & Discussion
I think the bigger problem is affording healthy food and, perhaps even more importantly, the lack of effort to eat healthy. The obesity rate keeps getting worse and worse through the whole country, but particularly the poor. It is a widely underestimated drain on our entire economy for a multitude of reasons.

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
The county has a somewhat unique need for 'on-site' storage of records. Large, voluminous records.

The YouTube Thread
Remember this? I need a freeze frame of the cop's face at 0:36. Kind of interesting how everybody under 30 in my office doesn't really get what is so funny about this scene.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Looks like the PD has settled on Tom Reed as the new Cavs beat reporter for the paper. I don't know much about Reed, but thank God we don't have to go through another season with the highly disinterested MS Boyer covering the team. She may have been better than Branson Wright, but that ain't saying much.

I would agree with that too. But, as was part of his previous point, too many people assume you can fix the problem by simply taking the welfare check away from the inner city recipients. People are also drastically underestimating the true, long-term cost of war..... particulalrly with all the increased use of explosives and advances we have made in protective gear that turns what would have been dead soldiers into life-long dependents.

Who exactly are you including in 'the entitled'? Would that include the military veteran? The schitzophrenic homeless guy? The autistic child? Or are we just talking about the not-so-single mother on welfare with the premium cable package?

Walkscore's 2011 Rankings
I always thought the opposite was true. That being, that the hills dissect the neighborhoods and hurt walkability. Sure, not to the same extent as the lake would hurt cleveland's score under certain tests, but I don't see how the topography of those cities helps. Maybe because it squeezes things together more? But I can only see that helping the internal neighborhood's walkscore, not the city as a whole

Civvik - You forgot that they also gave each of their managers a significant temporary raise, figuring that those expenses would be recouped and more throigh increased profits directly attributable to those raises. And they also have concluded that doing anything but making those raises permanent would have a crippling businesseffect, despite the lack of increased profits to date. Now they are wondering why their business is going broke while their managers are all driving brand new Bentley's

US Economy: News & Discussion
C-Dawg - the last part of the last sentence of your post was the reason for the downgrade, regardless of how you feel about S&P's decision..... which the other top two ratings agencies obviously don't agree with. And given how giddy some people sound about this, I don't expect it to change. The dysfunction in the Capital Bldg, intentional or not, is very damaging.

When do you work?
It varies. Some months, this is an appropriate question. Others, the better way to ask it seems to be "when don't I work". Office hours are loosely 9-5 but I am in and out all day. Fairly flexible. Lots of work from home where the phone isn't ringing every 5 mins. I'm more than a bit of a night owl. Some of my most productive hours come after the wife and kid are asleep, between 10pm and 2am. I am also on call pretty much 24/7 and, of course, a lot of those come in after midnight. I also have meetings to attend after business hours on a regular basis. Then..... I have a second job as a landscaper/carpenter/painter/plumber/electrician/gopher/massuese

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
If you put your visceral to the side for a minute, you might notice the reason for that link. Check the context of the conversation we were having. Hit the link and..... abracadabra.... you have links to four polls conducting by national polling firms. I would have thought you might have done that before doing that research on the background of the blogger or the website, neither of which I knew. It was simply the first site that I found which had links to all four polls. Here.... I will make it more elementary for you: PPP Mar 15th 31% for SB5 54% against SB5 http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2011/03/brutal-numbers-for-kasich-sb-5.html Wenzel Apr 12th 38% - for SB5 51% - against SB5 http://www.wenzelstrategies.com/blog/polls/wenzel-poll-majority-favors-repeal-of-senate-bill-5-2/ Quinnipiac May 18th 36% - for SB5 54% - against SB5 http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x1322.xml?ReleaseID=1601 PPP May 25th 35% - for SB5 55% - against SB5 http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/PPP_Release_OH_0525.pdf Better? Oh yeah.... here is one from July that was not posted in that link Quinnipiac July 20th 35% - for SB5 56% - against SB5 http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x1322.xml?ReleaseId=1625&ss=print The numbers on the proposed effort to repeal SB5 limiting collective bargaining in a November referendum are similar to those on Kasich personally. Republicans oppose repeal 56 - 35 percent, while repeal wins 75 - 14 percent support from Democrats and 52 - 33 percent support from independent voters. On further review, maybe I should revise my earlier statement about the gap closing...... it appears to be getting wider! :p

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
They will outspend. But they won't win. There have been multiple polls and all show a nearly insurmountable gap. 'Likely voters' is a factor these polling agencies take into account. Sorry. We have now had a series of polls, from different polling firms that all confirm Ohioans overwhelmingly support the repeal of SB5 by double-digit margins. http://anthonycaldwell.com/?p=271 Add in Kasich's approval rating and SB5 is in all likelihood toast come November. Which is why I suggest a compromise now. Let's not divide the state on such a partisan issue. I don't see how the GOP is not pushing for this. Maybe they don't realize how many voters in this crucial swing state they have turned off. The national GOP party would be wise to inform Kasich and Co. that no Republican Presidential Candidate has EVER won the general election without winning Ohio.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
I took a bit of a visual inventory last night of the available spaces between E 55 and the Clinic. All I can say is there is years and years and years of lots prime for development there. Several buildings are for lease and several acres of undeveloped land for sale/lease. What is the deal with the large lot on the south side of the street just west of the Clinic? It has a sign that says "Build to Suite" (yeah, that really is what it says). I'm surprised the Clinic has not swept in and turned that into a surface lot.

Cleveland: Local Media News & Discussion
Since 1100 doesn't really have sports talk shows anymore, I think this is just filling the market share WTAM abandoned when it became more obsessed with right-wing radio (and the occassional left-wing whacko like Art McCoy) than with sports. Hell, even Trivisommo hasn't talked sports since the 2008 election (big shocker there). I remember when WTAM was sports talk nearly all day. Now, it is Bob Franz to Glen Beck to Rush Limbaugh to Mike Trivisommo to whatever conspiracy theorist they can throw in there at night to talk about fake moon landings, alien abductions, and the white devil. They really only break for the games and some really weak post-game shows.

Mayor Frank Jackson quashes new social media ordinance aimed at killing flash mobs CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Mayor Frank Jackson -- in his first veto since taking office in 2006 -- quashed legislation aimed at putting the kibosh on flash mobs that cause trouble. ................................. Jackson, in a letter to council last week, said he was sympathetic to the goal of the legislation. "However, like any criminal prohibition, the law needs to be narrowly tailored to combat the illegal activity, be an effective deterrent to wrongdoers, and not unduly interfere with the rights of law-abiding citizens," he wrote. Andrea Taylor, Jackson's press secretary, said it was the first time Jackson used his veto power. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/08/mayor_frank_jackson_quashes_ne.html

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
I remember reading somewhere (probably on here) that the tower could hold upwards of 200 tenants depending on how the units were constructed. Add 75 or so hotel rooms across the street and that will definitely have an impact on that corner. If only some momentum could get started with the Huntington Bldg.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
"By committing the chamber's resources, financial and otherwise, to this important endeavor, Ohio's job creators are reiterating the message that Ohio must be open for business," said Andrew E. Doehrel, president and CEO of the Ohio Chamber. Huh? I don't get the connection.
