^That is what I like to call a creatively disingenuous argument. Can't blame them (the pro-SB5 folks) for trying.... I suppose.

US Economy: News & Discussion
Since it would have been posted already if the numbers were gloomier.... Unemployment aid applications tick down to 400,000 WASHINGTON -- The number of people seeking unemployment benefits dipped last week, a sign the job market may be improving slowly. The Labor Department says that applications for unemployment benefits edged down 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 400,000. That's the lowest level in four months. ................................ Applications have been at or above 400,000 for 17 weeks. They fell in February to 375,000, a level that signals healthy job growth. They stayed below 400,000 for two months, but applications then surged to an eight-month high of 478,000 in April and have declined slowly since then. http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2011/08/unemployment_aid_applications_2.html

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
I understand that but I think you're missing what I'm saying. I'm speculating on having the address of the entire development itself changed once redeveloped. I think of it as a corner building and not East Ninth and Prospect but East Ninth and Euclid. I guess I am missing what you are saying. Changed to what? It already has a Euclid address. And, right now, the 'complex' (the tower plus the rotunda) IS a corner complex. But, like I said, if market rate apartments are contemplated, then I am speculating that the rotunda will be separated (if feasible) and put to other use.

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
I believe it already has a Euclid address - 900 Euclid Avenue. But my point was that it is not a 'corner building'. The tower itself does not touch Euclid.
-
Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
Euclid Avenue address in name only. Technically, the building is on E 9th unless they turn the rotunda into a lobby, which I highly doubt if the plan is for market rate apartments without a hotel component.

Cleveland: Cuyahoga County Gov't properties disposition (non-Ameritrust)
Here's a random thought, but the old Federal Courthouse on public square is used solely for bankruptcy proceedings now, I believe. I wonder if the cash-strapped Feds would be interested in consolidating those services into the new Stokes tower (not sure if there is room) and renting the old courthouse to the county for its new headquarters? This is really just spaghetti against the wall and I hate to be the "what if" guy, but that building could very well meet the county's needs with large floorplates and open spaces. Not to mention it is a building designed for government functions. And it keeps the county on the mall.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Not necessarily. Moving onto the next county would have its own issues given the more rural setting. There would be less schools and even possibly less $$ per pupil. Plus, I think you are not giving full consideration to the type of flexibility and school choice that can be brought into a county-wide system.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
If something needs to be done beyond feeding a tic-tac to a whale, then a county based system must be implemented. Otherwise, there will just be small scale mergers that really won't get at the heart of the problem. A school districts which are fine with the status quo of their system (such as Beachwood and Orange) may merge and the systems that are in dire need of transformation will be left out in the cold without a dance partner. County systems are not perfect, but they work well enough in other states (such as North Carolina) so that people are not so motivated to move farther and farther out from the city core. If you start with that baseline, then there could be some discussion about school choice within the various systems. There could be schools like John Hay that target top students and there could be school like the now defunct CH-UH Taylor Academy to which the rabble-rousers to keep them in line and not disturbing the learning environment.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I know less than I should about the westside. And I know there have been some 'changes' over there. But are there statistics to back up the notion that violent crime or just crime in general has significantly increased?
-
Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Or maybe the full story behind all this has yet to come to light. Most acts of violence, especially those involving deadly force, are not random.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
I suspect it's also hard to compare the lakefront west of downtown, which mostly faces directly north or even has a slight tilt to the northeast and is dampered by high bluffs, with the shoreline to the east, which takes a sharp turn to face directly into the winds coming from the northwest and is much more at lake level. It was always my understanding that this geographical difference is why the east side gets more snow.

Ohio University Number One Party School in America
Really surprised by Ole Miss, but I guess all I really know of that school is how they all dress up for the football games like they are going to a golf tournament or polo match. Ahhh..... my dorm's (not OU) favorite chant when cheering on the the pukers.

Show a pic of your pet
Tragic story, but I thought I'd give a head's up. We don't have a fence between us and the people that live behind us. We kind of share the larger space and both families have dogs. Last year, their Lab was poisoned somehow (still don't know how exactly). They bought two Lab puppies this year. A yelllow and a black lab. Both girls. They loved to rough house together. Really sad, but yesterday the yellow got her face caught in the black lab's collar. The parent were at work and only their youngest daughter was home. Both dogs apparently started struggling and the girl could not get them separated. The black lab suffocated to death. Keep this in mind when both buying a collar and fitting the collar. I suspect the collar was too loose because the yellow lab should have never been able to get stuck like that and also there should be some 'give' to the collar just in case the dog does get it stuck somewhere. Keep in mind that a dog's natural instinct when it feels something pull on its neck is to pull in the other direction. Freak accident, for sure, but there is a lesson here. Oh yeah.... although I would never blame the poor traumatized young girl who witnessed this, I would guess you are much better cutting the collar probably was possible if she was thinking straight at the time.

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
Good for him. It must be done for the good of our educational system. I just hope that his intent is not to simply transfer any and all savings back to the taxpayers, but to invest a good chunk of those savings in improving our schools. It's not that we pay too much for our schools. It is that we don't get what we pay for.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
FYI, I heard that the club option for 2014 on Ubaldo's contract is void now that he has been traded. If true, we have him for the next two years (unless he sucks it up and we are able to re-sign him), not the next three. I am still OK with the deal. It was nice to be a 'buyer' for once.
