Westlake: Crocker Park
^Or City Hall felt they couldn't afford to set a bad precedent or cause a domino effect. You give a sweetheart deal to any of those businesses and all of the downtown businesses will come forward with their hands out when their respective leases are up. They would be watching their pocketbook, same as any business.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Yes. Colt had an offensive playbook and Fujita had a defensive playbook. Personally, I think Little is going to make an immediate impact. He is big, strong, good hands, and can run after the catch. Plus, he played in a system which relied on short crossing routes and he is fearless going over the middle. If you don't hear Phil Tayolor's name called once all season, that will mean he is probably having an All-Rookie team year. I understand that DT is not a 'sexy pick' especially when the guy is a lane-clogger, but don't underestimate the vital element of the position. Marecic should contribute immediately as well (assuming Vickers won't be back :(). One can only hope he blocks like Vickers and strikes the fear of God into opposing LBs, but I can assure you he is already a better 'ball-in-hand' player than Vickers. He should be a nice 'dump' option for Colt as the offense comes together. We need a big impact from Sheard, but I'm not so sure we will see it right away. Him, more than anyone, I will be watching in pre-season. Oh yeah...... ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?!?!?!?!

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
Is there a separate thread for this? Euclid building new fishing pier for Lake Erie anglers The City of Euclid wants to be a fishing destination for Lake Erie anglers, building a $1.1 million pier in 2011 that will anchor the proposed $30 million Waterfront Improvements Plan thatt includes a lakefront marina, sandy beach and shoreline trails. Construction will begin soon on the Sims Park Fishing Pier, adding 140 feet to the city's little-used short pier. ........................ The Waterfront Improvements Plan for the half-mile of shoreline includes a breakwall-protected marina with as many as 200 boat slips and pods of stone or "bin structures" that will protect the sandy beaches. A hiking, biking and walking trail will wind along the shoreline, where high 30-foot bluffs will be transformed into gradually-sloping access to Lake Erie. "This has been 20 years in the planning stage," said Mayor Bill Cervenik. "We want the new pier to be in place before the end of 2011. The rest of the improvements are a 5- to 10-year project." The small beach at Sims Park will be extended to the east, with the proposed marina to be located at the east end of the new lakefront park. The architectural pier design by JJR, a national planning and design firm, calls for an open-air pavilion, concrete deck, wind turbines and a broad fishing platform at its north end. A switchback trail to the fishing pier will be added in the future to provide easier access for disabled visitors. http://www.cleveland.com/outdoors/index.ssf/2011/07/post_8.html

Where can I find detailed demographic data for Ohio?
I think the NY Times has a detailed interactive map which is posted in one of the census threads.

Cleveland: Basketball Courts
The multi-plex leagues can be overwhelmingly talented. Lots of current and former NBA and college players hoop there. I think I read this week that Lebron James played there recently. I don't know about the courts themselves, but I would not consider the general area around MLK and Kinsman to be safe.

^^The rec center would cost something to get in. I don't know what non-resident fees are. I honestly don't know if Cumberland courts.

Pretty sure Keith was being sarcastic. He knows way too much about the local "amenities" to be straight.

Cleveland: Basketball Courts
Cain Park in Cleveland Heights has some courts. Same with Denison, but that would be farther away. The courts at Cain Park are right near the corner of Taylor and Washington. The neighborhood is safe. Not sure about the courts at 30th and Woodland.

Yes. That target is the best I have been in. The shopping cart / escalator thing is worth a visit by itself. But I say US is a good concept but bad design because I have been in other, similar shopping centers which are laid out much better. To me, US is somewhat confusing as to which level each store is on (the signs don't help much) and it can be a bit confusing how to get from one level to the next. I also don't think enough natural light is let into the parking deck.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I have some friends coming to town for dinner tomorrow night and Ponte Vecchio would have been the best place--that I knew of--to take them, given classiness, general vibe, price, quality, location, and view. Does anyone have any recommendations of a place that is similar? Take them to LI and you can just choose wherever you want to eat. You can scoot around to one place for apps, another for the main course, and then round out the night at a bakery. If any kids are tagging along, the playground is always a hit. Another place to do this would be Cedar-Lee, which has a lot of good options for not just food, but an after meal pub (the rear patio at Colony is particularly nice IMO) I also have had some good times with big groups at Zocalo on E4th.

NFL: General News & Discussion
When the owners unanimously approved the proposal, we should have all known it was doomed. For purely strategic reasons, you would have thought all those billionares would have had the sense to at least not give off the appearance that this was a deal they would jump on. What the h-e-double hockey sticks do they pay their high-priced negotiators for!

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
A little blurb in a broader PD article on recent city council actions - http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/07/cleveland_considers_domestic-p.html The council also banned use of social media to summon unruly "flash mobs." Violations of the new law will constitute a minor misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $100 on the first offense. The penalty would be in addition to sentences for disorderly conduct or other crimes. Reed made the proposal after recent disturbances in Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights. Reed said he wanted to head off trouble at summer festivals in Cleveland. Whenever someone decides to present a legal challenge on these new laws, that is going to present some VERY interesting issues for a court to decide. I agree with the purpose/intent, but I am not sure that these ordinances will withstand a constitutional challenge. Plus, who gets to decide whether a 'flash' mob is 'unruly'? Certainly, the Philly and Chicago flash mobs you can see on youtube would qualify. But what about the ALF-CIO flash mob that recently hit walmart with a marching band?

Ohio LGBTQ+ News
Will they take this up again next year? If I understood the article correctly, that seemingly arbitrary cut-off date was put in because they did not want to vote on something without having some feeling as to the costs. Maybe the concern is that the DP registry would skyrocket among City employees once significant economic benefits were introduced? Now THIS is encouraging.... An effort by local pastors to do away with the registry failed to get enough signatures to place the issue on the ballot.

Just a guess, but the lobby might be a good staging area for downtown filming..... and I would not be surprised at all if the Rotunda is used for a scene.

SB5 Bill and Repeal News
Oh.... it is going to get inflammatory on both sides. You probably know well how much of an a-hole a cop can be when you challenge him/her. That is why I said I think it is time for a real, genuine, good-faith sit-down. Let's not divide the state more than it already is. I think it is fairly clear the referendum will succeed, even if the gap will close. I don't see them making up THAT much ground between now and November.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I think Marriot has less than 400 rooms and a 'convention-sized hotel' would probably be double that.
-
Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
^Perhaps, but as I said, I think the higher value of that particular parcel is to hold it for possible expansion of the MM. At least wait to see how the concept works out. As nice as it would be to have a convention sized hotel right at the CC/MM's doorstep, it would be even more vital for the MM to not be parsed up in a non-contiguous fashion. I also have to think that any such hotel would want to split the distance with the casino(s).

South Euclid: Cedar Center
If by 'they' you mean the City, keep in mind that University Square is in UH and this development is in SE. SE's motive is to increase revenue through business and property taxes. It gets nothing from US, full or not.
-
Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
+1 Not everyone will use the shuttle, just like not everyone will valet their car. Just like our collective argument for the 3C, 'options' are always best. But keep in mind that is all they are.... 'options'. Nobody will force you on that shuttle to PHS or Tremont. You are free to walk/bike/take public transportation. In the end, it will be a benefit to the businesses/neighborhoods to which the shuttle takes people. Christie's does not operate a shuttle to be 'nice'.... they do it because it generates business.

South Euclid: Cedar Center
^How dare you.... Warehouse Beverage is the crown jewel of the east side! But seriously, this development sucks. And, yes, SE needs to learn that desperation is a stinky cologne. Developers smell it and we end up with this cwap.
