  1. I do feel bad for the Grog Shop. I hope they are able to work out a comprimise somehow. It is going to be weird seeing Coventry at night without teenagers hangin on the corner. On a larger scale, I think the article posted by 327 is very interesting and disturbing. This is only going to get worse.... everywhere. Flash mobs (or whatever you want to call them in this situation) are becoming dangerously popular. They create an anarchist psyche even among kids who are otherwise decently behaved. Mix them with the kids who are not, and it is going to be trouble. Mob mentality at its worst. ^What did CH used to be that it is not now? If anything, I would say that Coventry, C-F, and C-L are all better than they have ever been (at least in my lifetime). A big part of the reason that these kids showed up there was because it was such a vibrant atmosphere (see photo thread I posted).
  2. Whatever happened to "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" Personally, I really like the element a flood of nepalese refugees have brought to my neighborhood. As for the age decline (or incline?) in Ohio, I think it has much more to do with our failures and short-comings from the late 90's and early 00's than what is going on right now. Point being, I expect it to start to level out. I don't think we will ever be a mecca for young people in the near future, but we won't be a repelent either.

'Rammed' down our throats I believe is the correct vernacular. I get confused too as to which one to use.
  4. Let's take this conversation over here. Looks like you drove by one of those arrests. Hopefully, the other two (charged with aggravated riot) were the a-holes responsible for instigating the fight at Coventry and Hampshire about 10 minutes before the fair ended. Also glad to hear that they are just a bit too old for juvy. Welcome to the big house fellas :) ^^^Hmmmm. Probably a necessary move, but it won't prevent the 18-21 year old crowd from loitering. In all honesty, that is the group that causes more problems than the juveniles. I suppose if you take away the packs of 15-16 year old girls with their sh!t hanging out, you might manage to indirectly eliminate that other group. I also wonder how they are going to enforce it. Is it a flat out prohibition preventing even casual passerbys? Or will it only be enforced against loiterers? Throwing Cedar-Lee in there has Kelly written all over it. BTW, "Mayor" is actually a bit of a misnomer for Kelly. He is the president of council, which CH calls 'Mayor'. The City Manager, Bob Downey, really runs CH as a more traditional mayor would.
  5. Break-boy..... as in break-dancing. What happened? Did you miss the 80's? Well played. :behind:
  6. Sorry, I meant high-rises. We really don't have many residential high-rises downtown and the ones that we do have were originally constructed for that purpose. I also never said that they have to 'learn'.... it is more they need the right conditions to evolve.
  7. Allow me to kindly suggest that anyone who is really that annoyed/bothered by this thread simply bypass visiting it. We all have feelings about other cities in Ohio and their residents' views/expectations of them, but it doesn't mean we have to throw them in to every thread possible. Personally, I think the present title is worse than the original. As has been mentioned before, I think Philly's success in converting underutilized office buildings into residential is something Cleveland developers would be wise to look into to. I'm always a big fan of more lighting, as well. And, FWIW, my cousin is a cop that works the downtown beat in Philly and he thinks Cleveland's downtown is much nicer. I suppose he regularly sees the ugly side of Center City. ^Downtown Cleveland has a decent number of tourists with the RRHOF and sports venues, not including business visits. Certainly not the amount Philly has, but enough to give some serious consideration on how to make their visits more enjoyable. That is certainly true with the CC/MM, Casino(s) and Aquarium all coming on line within the next few years.

200,000 from Cuyahoga County alone. I hear a sampling done today confirms that no less than 60% (well above the needed quota) are indeed valid.

  10. The Coventry Street Fair was held this past Sunday from 12-6pm. Great weather. Great crowd. Good times. I actually went twice, once with my son in the early afternoon and returned later in the day for these pictures and to hear my man Carlos Jones play. I believe the next fair is in late July and I encourage anyone who enjoys this type of event to attend. NOTE: Yes, we all know there was some trouble at closing time, but lets keep that discussion in the appropriate thread. The reports are mixed at best. Regardless, as you can see from the pictures below, there wasn’t a hint of anything but peace and love (just as it should be) through the time I left at 5:15pm. I'd ask the mods to keep it clean. Enjoy. Arriving at the fair at around 3:30pm… 1. 2. 3. Lots of tall people walking around 4. A Blues Band playing to a very uninspired crowd (I guess that’s sort of the point) at the intersection with Mayfield Rd. 5. All sorts of people enjoying a beautiful day in THE Heights 6. 7. Plenty of vendors with ‘Coventry’ type things 8. 9. Very nice turnout 10. 11. This guy was ‘spinning’ at the corner of Hampshire (more from here later) 12. Street performers galore. He actually was quite talented. Not as talented as that little guy standing in front of him (more from him later) 13. The strip was absolutely packed from Hampshire all the way up to Euclid Heights Blvd 14. 15. 16. 17. People enjoying the Panini’s patio 18. More street performers at the intersection with Lancashire 19. 20. 21. I-Tal and Carlos Jones playing reggae to a nice crowd at the top of the strip 22. 23. 24. Crossing Euclid Heights and looking back at the strip 25. 26. 27. Coventry Peace Park being put to good use on a great day 28. 29. 30. 31. Heading back down 32. 33. I think Mickey was trying to scoop those digits 34. 35. 36. 37. 38. More really, really tall people who don’t walk so good (….sure your hand just happened to touch her breast) 39. Whatever they were cooking over there smelled good 40. 41. 42. 43. 44. Nice hat (in the background there) 45. Pretty sure this guy was going for some cleavage shots 46. I’ve been spotted 47. 48. You gotta have some balls to walk on those things through a crowd like this. All it takes is one a-hole who thinks it would be funny to see you fall 49. 50. Get the word out 51. 52. Just when I was about to leave…. an impromptu b-boy competition 53. 54. 55. 56. 57. 58. 59. 60. And the winner was….. 61. 62. 63. 64. Some parting shots at around 5:15 (45 minutes prior to closing) 65. 66. 67. 68. This a-hole again.... 69.
  11. Good to hear. So you are saying that we shouldn't believe everything we read on social media? ;) I definitely had my doubts, but sadly the damage is probably already done (for Larchmere) considering that I don't even have a FB account and heard about it. Sort of like those alleged gun shots that popped of at the Coventry Street Fair on Sunday which have been confirmed nowhere outside of social media.
  12. White..... Bikini.....
  13. My (non-winter) philosophy is simple - why drive when you can ride? Any truth to the facebook posting (which I heard about but did not see) about some guy getting jacked for his bike while leaving the bar last Friday?
  14. I used to love Rally's too. Big Buford, anyone? Now, I get a 'bathroom urge' just driving by the place.
  15. The classic car dealership between noble and warrensville ctr Upholstery Talk - that old russian dude has some talent Puff N Stuff I wish Manhattan Bagels (or something like that) was still around
  16. City Club? I know Cleveland Athletic Club is on that list, but is the City Club bldg largely vacant too? Yeah. I meant the CAC.
  17. I think all of the properties which are vying for a piece of the hotel market pie are in the mix. Apartments might very well be option B for Bruer, Truman, Schofield, City Club, Huntington.... whichever loses the race to fill the new hospitality demands post CC/MM and Casino(s)

It's the same, single, unfortunate incident. Compare this link with the one KJP posted - http://www.woio.com/global/story.asp?s=12732601 To answer your second question, a helluva lot more than you will see at Shaker Square. Unfortunately, there are people out there who want to see Shaker Square and areas like it fail. They just consider it a dump (for a variety of reasons) and can't understand how someone could enjoy an environment like that. These biases lead to an effect not unlike a game of telephone with these types of instances and by the time the story makes its way around, you would have thought that SS looked something like Beruit circa 1980's when this was going on.

Another case of bad luck, RR. That is not par for the course at the movie theatre by any stretch of the imagination. ^^^KJP, funny story about the car running out of gas. A buddy of mine lived on Mayfield and Coventry and woke up one morning to find that his car was missing. He urged me to wake up and make it over there ASAP to find it. I asked him if he was crazy and said that his car was long gone. He said just to trust him and get my arse over there pronto. Sure enough, we found it just a few blocks away in the middle of the street and when I asked him how he knew, he said he was so low on gas that he was worried about getting the car started, let alone getting the 200 feet it needed to go to pull into the gas station.
  21. It's not just you that sees it as a problem. BTW, maybe the mods want to move all of this discussion over the "Suburban Crime and Safety" thread to keep this one clean.
  22. ^^Well, I guess you didn't read the last paragraph on my post about how this is a negative side-effect of social media? And there are no reports (outside of a tweet, maybe) of several thousand or even seven hundred kids actively fighting. The eyewitness I spoke to said that there was one fight involving two kids on the strip and that caused a whole crowd of people to start running and screeming down the street. I'm sure, in a crowd like that, when people started running towards the commotion, someone surely got pushed or felt like they were punched. If you went to Heights High, then you know it took little more than a loud yell to make the whole cafeteria (at least the younger ones) swarm to one spot like locust, all screaming and yelling themselves. So I can totally see how that happened and how it was 'percieved' as being a riot. Also, like I said, when the cops started yelling and getting aggressive, I would suspect that is when things really got out of control because the mob mentality took over and you have probably what JJ40 saw along Mayfield.
  23. Hts121 replied to a post in a topic in City Life
The rule is (or at least should be) "don't go north of Mayfield".... but, yes, I agree that it is similar.

I wasn't scorning you. I was honestly curious and mainly wondering if you would recommend C-F or Coventry, which I guess you do.
  25. RR.... YES! I finally found somebody else who saw or participated in a fight or two when they were a teenager. And I was beggining to think I was somewhat of an oddball ;) I think your post pretty much nails it. Their intent is NOT to ruin a family's good time, even if that is the effect. These are kids from rival high schools all in one place. I was in a HUGE fight back in the day at Shaker HS and one at my HS with the kids from Shaw. Another one down on E 222 with the kids from Euclid. And my friends and I had a thing with this wanna be bad a$$ crowd from Brush for years going all the way back to the St. Claire dances and St. Gregg's and St. MM festivals. Point being, the fact that fights happen at these types of event should come as no surprise. I think that social media has simply exploded over the past few years and now everyone know where everyone is at any given moment and people like a crowd. Years ago, you would have heard about "how jumpin'" the Coventry Street Fair was after the fact. Now, people are being urged to congregate and being fed info on whether so-and-so is there and so-and-so said this or that about your mamma.
