  1. ^^You are just trusting the most extreme accounts. Sounds like you are going from the Cleveland.bomb commenter who said that 1000 to 2000 kids just suddenly showed up at closing time like a flash mob. That could have been the case, but it doesn't take away from the fact that many, many of these kids were there well prior to any trouble and were doing just what eveyone else was doing - walking around, listening to the music, watching the street performances. And, trust me on this one, if there were 1500-2000 kids fighting (as you suggest) then we would have recieved more than a blurb in the local paper. We would have been right up there with Vancouver from last week on CNN and every other major news network. Are you being serious? Here.... let me show you what maybe 100 people fighting looks like (and I'm pretty sure we saw nothing like this on Coventry yesterday)... Ain't it funny how when these types of situations arise, all of a sudden the writings of the cleveland.bomb posters become gospel? Nevermind the fact that these are arguably the sensationalist people in the city...
  2. There's a balance that needs to be applied, but rising prices could have some very positive effects. Mainly, if prices go high enough, building conversions (perhaps even new builds) into apartments will become a lot more economically feasible (i.e. developers will be able to secure loans).

You do realize that Shaker Square is not in Shaker? I'm just asking because you say you say your own experiences of Shaker are largely centered around Shaker Square. Also curious, "as a female", what are the places you suggest living that has a nice urban lifestyle?
  4. Half the people at the fair were teenagers (of all backgrounds) walking around by themselves. Take them away and the fair would have been much, much less vibrant. I don't do twitter (outside of sports) so I don't know what you mean. I know my purpose was to be out among a large crowd, enjoy the weather, maybe see some people I know, and listen to music. I imagine the great majority of these kids had the same purpose. Like I said before, they weren't causing any problems until the very end when a few bad apples spoiled the bunch. Once things got started and the cops started really pushing people to leave, it surely was "show my a@$ time" and escalated from there. I'm really not trying to sugar-coat anything, but I'm just really trying to get the point across that the fair (at least until the very end) was a perfect example of how people from all different demographics, races, faiths, etc. can come together and have a fun-loving time. It's just too bad that this ruckus at the end is all people are going to talk about.

Here's an interesting take on why the Cavs passed on Jonas. He is definitely not coming over next year and he won't sign a contract here until he does come over. With the new CBA negotiations, a big issue is going to be rookie salary scale. The owners want it slashed. The players honestly couldn't care less about it, but will use it as a bargaining chip. In the end, it will be lowered probably both in dollar figures and guarantees. Taking that into account and if the 'experts' are right about Jonas' potential, who's to say that Jonas won't be able to make boatloads more money over in Europe 2 years from now and just decides he is better off staying over there?
  6. I saw it spinning this weekend. But I just drove by it around noon and it was at a dead stop.
  7. And then there are people who are saying it is being blown out of proportion. One of my friends had a stand at the fair and I just called him up for the details. He said there was a fight just about closing time around Hampshire and Coventry which caused a gag of people to come screaming and running over hoping to see it (ever been in a school cafeteria when a fight breaks out? Sorta like that). He said it was mostly 13-15 year olds, if that. But there was no 'riot' on Coventry according to him and he was there the entire time. He heard no gunshots and hasn't talked to anyone who has. What happened on Mayfield once Coventry was cleared could be another story. I think it is safe (no pun intended) to say that if there really were gunshots (not fireworks, car backfire, etc.) that the PD would be all over it like white on rice. If there is one thing we can trust from our paper is that it never passes on an opportunity to put something like that on the front cover. Like I said, though, this is really taking away from the fact that the fair itself was a really good event. Don't let a few knuckleheads acting crazy in the last 10 minutes of a 6 hour event drive you away. I was there for 1 hour at the beginning and about an hour and half between 3:45-5:15. There were TONS of people there and I did not see one shred of trouble. I walked up and down the strip at least 3 times and over to the park, where kids of all different backgrounds were enjoying a nice day out and about. I have the pictures to prove it. I suppose the "don't let the terrorists" win mantra could be applied here.
  8. That is the SE-L library and is one of the most architecturally intriguing in the cuyahoga county system. Dunn Hardware has moved to Wilson Mills, just east of Richmond. Cleveland Sporting Goods was the name of the place where Krush is now. I used to get my pee-wee football stuff from there when my neighborhood was DOMINATING the Northeast league :)
  9. I don't know about that. There were PLENTY of families that returned this year and it seemed that everyone had a good time. The police presence on Conventry was excellent with at least one cop on foot at every corner and intersection. It's a dilemna, because you don't want to kill what makes these fairs great. I don't like the idea of an entrance fee and, if you make the kids have parents with them, then that will kill a lot of the spirit of the fair too. One possible solution might be to shift the hours a bit. Start it earlier and end it earlier (maybe 9-3 instead of 12-6). Also, from JJ40's experience, it appears the traffic control leaving the Fair needs to be improved. As far as kids from Heights, Shaker, Shaw, Glenville, Euclid, etc. having a fight or two when they congregate in one place, good luck. That has been going on since well before I was in HS. Social media is not helping, but there is nothing we can do about that
  10. Grum's is technically on Coventry, but close enough to Mayfield to be included. Now that's what I call a sub! Mario's (near Mayfield-Noble) is a nice little neighborhood bar.... so is the Purple Shamrock (closer to Belvoir). China Lui - if you ever want a mound of mouth watering take-out chinese food for 5 bucks and don't mind feeling like you are carrying a tire iron in your stomach for 3 days, this is your spot. Theresa's Flowers - been buying my christmas trees from there since I was a kid Dairy King - great little summertime walk-up ice cream shop Warehouse Beverage, as mentioned above. Alesci's - an italian grocer. We like to buy spreads from there when we have parties too big to cook for. East Coast Custard - world famous (among custard lovers, that is! Scalper's (near Brainard) - another decent hole in the wall neighborhood bar DiCillo's Tavern (near Lander) is one of my favorite quick, grab a bite to eat spots. EDIT: How could I forget Amy Joy Donuts... And then there are some that I truly miss: Gerome's Restaurant (Mayfield-Green) Heights Pet World (right at the CH-SE border) Center-Mayfield movie theatre (Mayfield-Noble) Plenty more that I can't think of off the top of my head
  11. It wasn't the scene at 5:15. Foot traffic was very light on Mayfield. Probably got that way after the cops cleared the street when the fair ended at 6pm. Lots of kids from a bunch of different neighborhoods (CH, Glenville, EC, Shaker, etc.) I would suspect in a large crowd trying to impress each other. It's sad the last 10 minutes and aftermath is the only thing that is going to be talked about after the Fair was such a blast for nearly 6 hours. Music, street performers, vendors, kids getting their faces painted, food.... it was such a good time I had to go twice (early on with my son - who just wanted his face painted and a t-rex baloon and then was done with it - and returned later by myself to photograph).
  12. Too bad. When I was there, everyone was having a good time and no one was causing trouble. I took a bunch of pictures and will be posting them soon. Reading the comments to that article, it sounds like huge flow of kids showed up at the end (there were plenty there already) and a few fights broke out. I hope no one was injured. Sounds like no one was. Can't these kids just wait for the Catholic School fairs to slug it out, like we did back in the day?

I am more than a little surprised to see this out of Larkin... Cut Ohio's losses by cutting a deal on SB 5: Brent Larkin Senate Bill 5 goes further in eroding public worker rights than White called for 15 years ago. And the former mayor says he has "no plans to get involved" in the likely campaign this year seeking its repeal. But of today's big-city mayors, only Mike Bell in Toledo supports retaining Senate Bill 5. The others want it gone. "I continue to say there needs to be some changes in how management and unions interact," said Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson. "We live in a world now where current work rules don't work. But the people who were promoting this went too far. This is more about destruction of the unions. And now the state has galvanized unions that often don't agree with each other." Aside from White, no big-city mayor in the last two decades has been more critical of union work rules than Akron's Don Plusquellic. Nevertheless, Plusquellic supports SB 5's repeal. t's fair to wonder if the mayor's position has something to do with a potentially competitive re-election campaign this year in a town with many union workers. But Plusquellic said he told legislators and an official in the Kasich administration before the law was enacted that "it goes too far." State officials "have really made a mistake here," said Plusquellic. "They've done something that really hurts their own cause." http://www.cleveland.com/opinion/index.ssf/2011/06/cut_ohios_losses_by_cutting_a.html

I agree. That is a good explanation of it. I have been in a few buildings along the south side of Shaker Blvd just west of the Square and they are definitely in the 'economy' class. Several of these neighborhoods around town come with the same caveats. For Coventry, it is probably best to stay south of Mayfield (or, maybe better put, don't go north of Mayfield). Tremont has that 'triangle' thing that I still don't understand. Lakewood has the RR tracks some say you should stay north of. Trust me on this, if SS 'as a whole' was truly unsafe to any significant degree, several people I know who live there would definitely be moving or have already moved. But they are quite happy there. They enjoy the atmosphere it offers. It isn't for everybody. A lot might depend on whether you are accustomed to a more urban environment.
  15. The new President (Falanga) was more involved with the CC/MM than Kennedy. If anything, I would guess this is a good thing for the project.
  16. Yes. A lot of it has to do with timeframe of development. Lakewood and Rocky River can hold their own with any east side suburb, but the rest are more sprawly for sure.
  17. The weather turned out nice. I could only stick around for about half the ride before breaking off due to other commitments, but it was fun. There was some guy that ate it pretty bad right at the beginning and I think there was a little confusion on which route to take at certain points.

Problem was, there was no market for Brandon Knight. What would have been your plan B? Its not like they didn't try to move down. Every report I have read has said that they desperately wanted to do so. But you should know by now that our GM's don't 'lose' in trades. They have to get the better end of it and won't just trade just to trade to appease an impatient fan base. I wasn't that high on Justin Harper so I am not unhappy with them trading him. I have no idea why everyone is talking so highly about him. This is a guy who averaged in single digits his first two years and barely cracked double digit scoring his junior year while playing at a school where most of the opponents centers were shorter than him. He only really came on his senior year. Truly talented stretch 4's don't last until the second round, especially not in this draft. Also, keep in mind that those Orlando 2nd's could be pretty high if Dwight leaves and they go into rebuild mode.

Cedar-Fairmount has a supermarket (Dave's) right at the heart of the strip. Little Italy has a brand new little market (Murray Hill Market) but does not have a 'supermarket'. But just right around the corner on Euclid is the new Uptown project which will include a grover, but probably not large enough to qualify as a supermarket.
  20. It means this company is looking to make some more $$. They purchased that garage through a bankruptcy auction and likelyy got it at a price far below the $25 million it took to contruct the garage. IIRC, their bid was a little shy of $8mill. They will flip it for a profit just like they are going to do with 200 PS.

Williams' outside shooting percentage more than doubled between his freshman and sophomore years. I'm not saying that TT is going to magically develop an outside touch, but the point is that Williams had that extra year of development in college. What might have happened with TT if he went back to school for another year is anyone's guess, but (with Hamilton gone) he would've been the man at Texas just like DWill became the man at Zona and I'm sure his stats would've improved. I also was shocked to see the difference in physical appearance between TT when he signed with Texas and his appearance in pre-draft videos. This kid is still maturing physically. He will get bigger and growing another inch is not entirely out of the question.

    Something I hadn't thought of, but comparing their freshman year statistics: Derrick Williams - 28 mpg, 15.7 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 1.0 apg, 0.6 bpg, 0.9 spg, 57% fg Tristan Thompson - 30 mpg, 13.1 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 2.4 bpg, 0.9 spg, 54%fg

And, practically anytime anyone dares to disagree with a subjective opinion about a particular area's safety or offer an opinion or facts which tend to rebut the 'unsafe' assessment, they are automatically accused of glossing things over. This is true even if no objective statistical evidence was ever offered demonstrably showing that the area is indeed unsafe.
  24. If they do, I can probably just jump on my bike and get away. The waistlines on most of those security guards are probably too big to catch me.
