Cleveland Cavs Discussion
All of them have bust potential. I like Kanter's look, but then I see his game (albeit there is only limited film) and have trouble translating it to the NBA. Here is the highlights from the Nike Hoops Summit where he basically made a name for himself. What I just can't get over is how 'below the rim' he plays. Jonas ('Big V') on the other hand..... And, yes. Vesely is impressive... For the last two, I would be interested in the examination of their frames to know how they might fill out. Yes, NBA teams actually do that. With Kanter, there is no such concern as he already has an NBA body. But Kanter's short wingspan bothers me. He is 6'11 with a 7'1 wingspan while Jonas is 7'0 with a 7'6 wingspan.

John Boehner
May be some contradiction out of Mr. Speaker. In 1999, he very firmly supported the President's use of similar force in the Balkans. Now he says it is illegal..... or should I say it somehow became illegal over the past two weeks. Boehner Claims Obama Is Violating War Powers Act, Two Weeks After Saying Obama Complied With Law http://thinkprogress.org/security/2011/06/14/245566/boehner-war-powers-hypocrisy/ Personally, I think this is an interesting issue. But what I find troubling is that Kucinich and his Democratic allies would have sued regardless of who was in the WH. But surely there would have been more Democrats if it wasn't for Obama. But the Republicans who joined in the lawsuit would NOT have done so if Obama was not in charge. Sorry, you can't convince me otherwise. No way, no how. I don't know enough about the War Powers Act to give an informed opinion, but I do agree with the Libya approach if we must get involved in foreign conflicts. We don't have troops on the ground. We have no intention to occupy. We are making NATO do its job and we are simply paying our fair share. It's actually pretty refreshing to see this approach.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
More bad news for you, heatohio. All indications I have read recently have the Cavs being underwhelmed by Kanter. They are brining him back on Monday to double check on that, but it appears they will take Big V at #4 if D Williams is off the board. That is... unless they can work a trade up to #2. I think the Cavs and Minny are in a game of chicken right now trying to see who will flinch first. Minny desperately doesn't want to be at 2 and the Cavs desperately want that pick. Both are trying to leverage against the other. Should be interesting.

Ohio one of the "least free" states?
Why are they leaving? Why are businesses leaving? 1) weather 2) perception 3) loss of manufacturing (which affects every state, but Ohio even moreso given our roots) Those are the biggest factors. I've never heard anyone say they are moving away because they don't feel "free" here. Ohio is a lot more business friendly than most debbie downers would like to potray it as. Of course, it varies depending on how you do the analysis, but I have seen Ohio in the top 10 in some studies. http://www.ohiomeansbusiness.com/newsroom/press-releases/single-press-release.php?id=163 http://www.abjusa.com/features/features_april_10/spotlight_on_ohio.html ( If we were as unfriendly as you would like others to believe, we would not rank 5th in terms of fortune 500 companies.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
'We' are not just "throwing up whatever"..... 'we' are building structures which have market demand now and for the FORESEEABLE future. And good thing we have PLENTY of open lots for these developers to snatch up (whenever they are ready to do so). You need to take a ride on South Blvd in Charlotte (along the new light rail Lynx line) for a good example of how the types of TOD developments you want to see can mix with the types of development which you think will ruin any chance of development in the future. And you need to understand that until you see your desired mixed use developments saturate the downtown and UC areas, you will NOT see them popping up in midtown. It's fun to imagine, though. I will give you that.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
Nor was Michigan Ave. likely to appear but for their construction. What we got might not be ideal, but it is better than abandoned lots and empty structures. Remember, the City leaders are not trying to convince YOU to invest in the Corridor.... they are trying to convince the people that actually have the funds and will to actively engage in development. These people will be more enticed by present day Euclid Ave. than by 1990's Euclid Ave.

Ohio one of the "least free" states?
People are not leaving Ohio because they feel their freedoms are being restricted here or because they feel that the State government has "too heavy a hand".

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
^Rhetorical? ^^That's because it was never realistic to see a vibrant 3.5 mile, 500 foot wide strip of mixed use development pop up out of the ashes. TPTB certainly have not batted 1.000 in terms of all the decisions that have been made, but pragmatism thankfully has not been disregarded. ^^^I disagree. There is still PLENTY of space to fill..... enough for decades of development..... particularly the type of dense development you are hoping for. Sit back and think about how long and what type of dedication and investment it would take to fill in just ONE block with the type of mixed use you want. For instance, consider the empty lot near 55th and Euclid. Think about how long 4th street took to fill in with mixed use. Also, there seems to be this misconception that whatever is being built can never be changed if the market demands a better use. Not true.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
Quick update on this. The framing for the first three townhomes is nearly complete and they have already sold out. Two in the next phase are already sold as well. Construction should start very soon on those. All in all, 16 townhomes are planned. A little perk will be a (distant) lakeview from the rooftop decks. The condo building still has a few units left but is pretty full. I don't think any of the cluster homes are left, but there are thoughts of putting two more cluster blocks in the rear (north) of the property.

The shorter buildings will help create density and activity (both of which were sorely lacking when this whole process started). In time, the momentum may entice a developer to build something bigger. Be patient.

There will be a separate licensing fee for each race track they want to put slots in. Something like $45mill per track, IIRC. There also is a requirement that the facilities be updated/modernized if the slots are added.

I just caught a bit of the Kasich interview on WTAM. A couple points of interest: 1) Kasich said that the deal allows Rock Gaming to build a "connected casino" 2) The deal does not "require" Rock to build Phase II. FYI, Triv asked this one... Kasich did not bring it up. The State has not reached a deal with Penn National yet. But just reading between the lines of what Kasich was saying, I have to assume that Rock insisted upon a "me too" clause. That might create a huge problem in the negotiations with Penn National since its planned level of investment was substantially smaller.
