Although I think the way he went about it was not handled that well, it appears that this Kasich roadblock worked out well for all involved. He deserves some credit for that.

Safety forces are somewhat of a no brainer IMHO. I don't see a significant downside that even approaches the benefits of consolidation. Yes, schools will never happen. Some administrative positions might be able to be consolidated, but any talk of merging the districts in any substantial way will destroy this whole discussion. I also think that mergers of service departments will be a harder sell than people anticipate.

Today, you are correct. Which is why people really should be encouraged to carefully examine the costs/benefits. There are always con's in any substantial modification of the status quo. People are going to focus on those con's until someone can demonstrate how they are outweighed, perhaps significantly, by the pro's. So, no matter how far fetched it seems, we should keep discussing the issue.

Good info. But we don't have a difference of opinion. I agree with you. My response was simply to offer examples of projects in which we DID lose something of significance..... or at least as significant as the Columbia.

The Ohio Constitutional Convention of 1912 gave political subdivisions local autonomy which would have precluded annexation. Before then, the suburbs just weren't built up enough to warrant any desire by the City to annex. Remember, Clevleand was a bit of a late bloomer as a major metro.

I wasn't implying that this was the developer being 'cheap'. Quite the opposite. I'd assume they cost more than using wood for the studs on the interior walls.

Obviously, you are using extreme examples which really don't apply. Nobody is going to get mad at you or offended for calling something 'lame' or 'crazy'. Using such examples is actually a pet peeve of mine. Also the term 'political correctness' is more than a bit of a misnomer. It has nothing to do with politics. It has more to do with generally accepted social standards, which we need (from sources other than ancient books written by people who knew nothing of modern society). There is no law against using the "N" word. There is no law against using the "F" word. There is no law against calling women b!tches, sluts, etc. There is no law against calling someone retarded. But all of those terms are hurtful and derogatory when used in most contexts. To suggest that people should not be able to frown upon their uses and forbid their uses in places where speech CAN legally and rightfully be restricted (e.g. place of employment, schools, my house), really is a pet peeve of mine. I agree that some people can run amuck with PC, but you are free to not associate with those people if you choose.

Go Mavaliers! Seriously... I wasn't rooting against Lebron. I actually feel sorry for the guy now. This summer is going to be BRUTAL for him. I was rooting against Miami. I was rooting against the 'superstar' formula. I love how Dallas just showed that the 'team' concept is still the way to go. If Miami would have won, it would have been bad for the league. But, what do ya know, the superstar who stayed loyal to his team through all the tough times ending up winning it all with a sold albeit not star-studded supporting cast. Nice little tidbit is that not one player on Dallas' team had ever won an NBA championship. I have a feeling Lebron is going to go into seclusion at his fortress in Bath for awhile.

These numbers are tainted by foreclosures...... unless they are limited to private to private sales. For instance, we had one foreclosure on our block.... the bank first neglected the house, not winterizing the pipes, etc..... then it sold it for about half of what private sales are going for on our block just so it could dump it without worrying about the violations in need of repair. The guy who bought it has spent the last 3 months worjing on it and will surely flip it for a nice profit. But the initial sale is sure to be used as a 'comparable' in this type of analysis and for other sales, dragging down the general value in the nabe. I imagine other areas around the metro are much more prone to this phenomenon, which we probably are going to have to deal with over the next decade or so as more and more people realize they overextended themselves.

I forgot how miserably hot it gets in N Carolina this time of year. Took my bike down here..... went for a ride yesterday..... lost my sense of direction and got lost in a large residential neighborhood...... was lokking for someone, anyone to give me directions back to where I needed to go..... trying not to pass out from heat exhaustion...... but block after block after block, not a single soul was outside. Everyone hiding away in the A/C. The air was so thick you could cut it with a knife. One of those 95 feels like 105 days. Yuck. Can't wait to get back to my summer on the north coast! I usually don't come down here during the summers, unless we are going to the mountains or beach, but grandma turned 100 yesterday. Couldn't miss that.
