Cleveland: Zoning Discussion
1) I would be surprised if there is no "grandfather" clause, especially for existing downtown businesses. 2) Variances are common place with these kinds of ordinances in the surrounding communities. 3) I don't think it is a good idea.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Divided Ohio House passes budget full of cuts on heels of rosy revenue news COLUMBUS, Ohio — As the Ohio House approved a budget Thursday that makes gouging cuts to schools, local governments and other programs, good news arrived that may ease some of the pain. It came in the form of robust tax revenues for April that put Ohio on pace to have nearly $1 billion more than expected when fiscal 2011 wraps up June 30. As the budget deliberations move to the Senate, the extra money could soften the punishment meted out by the two-year spending plan. http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2011/05/divided_ohio_house_passes_budg.html

South Euclid: Cedar Center
I am not a fan either, but in fairness, we have to consider that this and many other projects were first conceived and the wheels were turning when the recession hit. They still have to do better than the cwap they show in the article. I am glad that there are leaders like Zaminski who recognized that and sent Coral back to the drawing board.

But it doesn't really change any economic impact Lubrizol has on our economy, does it? This is not like TRW packing up and leaving.

What are you watching?
Kill the Irishman was AWESOME! Somewhat of a more griddy, more authentic Goodfellas...... they even used the same guy who played Paulie to be the head boss from NY. Just the right amount of humor. Ray Stevenson was great as Danny Greene. He gets my Oscar vote! Vincent D'onofrio doing his best to pull off a Great Lakes accent had one of his best performances. Val Kilmer sucked as the cop though. I did get a kick out of the environment they depicted his place of death to be (definitely not Lyndhurst).

Ohio: Fortune 500 Companies Updates & Discussion
Hmmmmm..... I was wondering about that. But then I saw that Burlington Northern Santa Fe was still on the 2010 list even though BH bought it in 2009. But checking the 2011 list, it is gone, so I suppose you are right. It's odd because BH is a holdings company and Lubrizol will maintain its name, its structure, and stay in Wickliffe as far as I know.

There's something very disturbing about that comment.

Lubrizol should shoot up that list if the deal with Buffett goes through, I would think. What is the feeling on Macy's maintaining its revenue in the coming years. I don't think the future is bright for department stores.

South Euclid: Cedar Center
http://blog.cleveland.com/sunmessenger/2011/05/developer_of_cedar_center_nort.html#incart_mce Developer of Cedar Center North in South Euclid shows plans to city's planning commission Developer Peter Rubin unveiled a plan for the Cedar Center North shopping center his Coral Co. is developing off Cedar Road and, after hearing critiques from members of the city’s Planning & Zoning Commission, it was back to the drawing board. ............................ “Walkability was an important factor to us,” Rubin said, stating an intention to make walking easy between Cedar Center on the south, University Heights, side of the road (where Whole Foods is an anchor) and Cedar Center North. But commission member Tracie Zamiska was critical of the site plan, stating that a pedestrian must first cross Cedar Road, not always an easy task, and then walk through the parking lot area that makes up a great deal of the frontage in the Cedar Center North plan to get to its stores. Zamiska and other commission members appeared to be underwhelmed by the public greenspace included in the site plan, space that the city has heralded as being an important part of the development as it will serve as host to public functions. ................................ Zamiska said she and residents attended design charrettes in which residents gave ideas to Coral as to what they wanted to see at Cedar Center North, including the type of greenspace wanted. “I was at those charrettes,” Zamiska said after seeing Coral’s plan for greenspace. “Why did I waste my afternoons? This public space is not what the people wanted. You have to cross a driveway to get to it.”

Too bad we lost those aerial photo threads from Clevelumbus. Probably took quite a bit of time to put those together.

Cleveland or Pittsburgh???????????
Although Pittsburgh is in Appalachia the Pittsburgh region is not rural Appalachia - its similar to every other metro in the region. To say that there are some cultural things you have to account for in Pittsburgh with regard to it being in Appalachia is quite misleading. It's not Pikeville, Kentucky. I never suggested it was rural, but I disagree with the rest of your post. There are culturakl differences you have to account for when deciding which side of Cleveland, or Cincy, to settle down on. Certainly, there are cultural differences between Pitt and Cleveland.

Cleveland or Pittsburgh???????????
I hate appalachia, so Pittsburgh wouldn't be on my wish list even if I was considering moving. Point is, there are some cultural differences you have to account for. Good luck making your choice. The only advise I can give is that if it is a close call, family should be the deciding factor.

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
The world is grey, 327. You will soon learn that. And you are once again assuming that any 'street condition' ordinance was shelved so council could pass this legislation. Please tell me YOU'RE kidding.
-
Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
That's exactly what legislating is in ANY context! Legislating people's preferences on each other. Take a look at your #3. Those are YOUR preferences, priorities, whatever you want to call it. Real world lesson for the day ;)

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
I really don't have a dog in the fight with the trans fat ban. It might be overreaching a bit but, personally, I don't want to eat trans fat so it only benefits me. And I don't buy into the "what's next" angle. The smoking law is something I think you are going to see instituted around the country in short order. Hell, even North Carolina won't let you smoke in bars anymore. You used to be able to smoke in college classroom, airport terminals, etc. I can remember my mom getting into an argument with a lady who would not put her cigarette out in a McDonald's line. People got over those bans just like they will get over this and we will be better for it.

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
Following that line of reasoning, so do the slippery-slope, libertarian principaled conspiracy theories.

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
1) Trust me when I say the City welcomes more ways to levy a fine and police love more ways to create overtime (not that the smoking ban had that effect). 2) Nanny-state, shmanny-state. Just another fear tactic. You're also assuming that "every possible visitor" wants to sit in a smoke-filled bar. 3) What 'bigger-fish' do you suspect would have been fried but for the smoking ban?

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Cleveland is a fair weather baseball town. Always has been and probably always will be. If the success is sustained, then I think you are sure to see sellouts this summer. If not, then more of these dismal crowds will show up. You also have to consider that the town still has not gotten over the trading of two Cy Young winners in two straight years. I don't think that the fans blame the Indians for that as much as MLB and its current system, but the Indians are going to feel the wrath.

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
What are the consequences? Any evidence to back it up? This is what people said about the smoking ban in bars. But the only consequence I have seen are these lovely patios the law has coerced the bar owners into building.

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
Ever been to an inner-city playground? I don't want my kid playing around clouds of black&mild smoke or the stubs that are littered everywhere. Suppose you're right. That there was no second-hand smoke on playgrounds. What's your gripe then? I personally am not bothered by smoke. But I know people who genuinely are. My mother is one. She has actual physiological reactions to it. While it doesn't bother me, I hate it when people who are smoking get close to or want to touch my kid while they have a cigarrette in their hand...... or when you have to walk a newborn out of a restaraunt and there is a group of smokers crowding the door and smogging up the air.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
And you can bet that the bottom line between him and the GM dealership is not $17,000 per purchase. And you can also bet that there is some fine print in there about sticker prices at the dealership being non-negotiable should you wish to use the credit.
