  1. You can always exercise your god given right to live somewhere else. Or.... maybe you can exercise your right to vote in some council members that agree more with your own views. Council represents the collective will of the people. As long as its ordinances don't violate the City's charter or the Ohio or U.S. Constitution, your remedy is at the election booth. I also don't think the smoking ban has anything to do with micromanaging people's behavoir. It is a health issue for those who DON'T smoke. Same reason there are driving while texting bans. It is not that we don't want you to freely communicate with your BFF. It is because we don't want you running over the 6 year old girl who is crossing the street. The trans fat ban is, admittedly, more controversial from a 'principal' standpoint. But, once again, you are still free to eat as much trans fat as you want. Council is not invading that 'freedom'.... if you can call it that.
  2. Be practical people. This is how the legislative process works. I could say "why do they have speed limits?"...... "how long until we are not allowed to drive at all?" Or, how about, "why do we have zoning laws?"...... "shouldn't I be able to do whatever I want with MY property?" The slippery slope approach gets tiring. Try to find a regulation to which it can't be applied. Fact is, there is always a slippery slope and it is our job to keep the representatives who respect that and boot out the ones who don't. It's all a matter of common sense, to me, sort of like what the Supreme Court said about obsenity - "I know it when I see it." These regulations don't cross the line IMO.
  3. To clarify, and ease libertarian concerns, the law doesn't state that you can't smoke or that you can't eat trans fats. It just further restricts the location of your smoking and the ingredients restaraunts can use. I say 'further' because we already have such retrictions in one form or another. I get the slippery slope concerns but you could attach those to just about any regulation.

The center can be a lonely place in politics these days, Jeff. Well said.
  5. The rumor I heard, albeit not specific to the Vikings, is for next year's 1st rounder.
  6. Newton, Miller, and Dareus are all pretty much assured to be gone when we pick, which means that at least two of Peterson, Fairley, Quinn and Green will be there for our choosing. I have them ranked in that order and they all would be good value at #6. Can't pass up on Peterson if he is there. But if he is gone, I wouldn't mind trading down and picking up Kerrigan or Jones + a pick or two in the 2nd or 3rd round. We really can't go wrong. We're going to get a REALLY good player IMO. I'm more concerned about what we do in the latter rounds.
  7. The market is correcting itself.

ha....... ha........ East Siders could never "naturalize" on the west side. Our wives don't weigh more than our pick-ups. We limit our front porch appliances to the occasional grille. And we cut off our mulletts and rat tails thirty years ago. :P

    Have you gone beserk?
  10. This was posted on Cleveland.com. Still gives me chills: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gIs5tljbt4&feature=player_embedded#at=43
  11. People get hassled inside/outside Browns stadium too. Wasn't a 10 year old kid tackled by a grown man down there just last year? I also agree that the element around the Greyhound station has more to do with current perception than the element within the station.

Total guesses here: 1: India 2: China 3. Croatia 4. Ukraine 5. Belarus

I have no idea what Wheel of Time is, but I would somewhat compare Game of Thrones to Lord of the Rings. There definitely is the supernatural element, fictional land, no clear sense of era, etc...... though maybe not as much as LOTR. Didn't know about the mini-episodes, AJ. I need to watch those as I am still a bit confused about the background. You are also making a presumption with that incest comment, no? I know they SAY they are siblings, but I assumed it was a ruse after what happened in the first episode.

Caught the first two episodes of Game of Thrones. Seems like this will be another great HBO special.
  15. I only wish the Tudor Arms wasn't so disconected from other UC attractions. It just seems so lonely over there with its back to all the action. And MH.... my man.... you really need to get off that military time. There is no 0500 bugle around these parts.
  16. ^Sadly, I foresee the same end result. Nothing against Meyer. Nothing at all. But Tressel IS Ohio State Football.
  17. ^ Another advantage we have is that Lake Erie is much more shallow than the other Great Lakes, making it easier (presumably) to build off-shore. I think I read somewhere that 5 miles or so off-shore would be ideal. I just don't want to hear any PETA complaints. Better to have the occassional seagull suffer blunt force trauma death than have one die a slow and painful death covered in oil. Plus, it seems like it would advance evolution of the seagull - i.e., the dumby who flies straight into the two hundred foot high spinning thingy on the lake won't grow up to have little seagulls of its own.
  18. For the entire midwest, especially those areas around the Great Lakes, this seems like such a no-brainer. We ARE the Saudi Arabia of wind. Let's start utilizing that natural resource the same way Alaska and Texas do with oil.
  19. For those of us who don't do FB..... where is the starting point this Friday?
  20. ^I can't imagine that Tressel or OSU is going to contest that finding.... besides perhaps the verbiage. But he clearly signed the form saying that he had reported all known violations. That was a misrepresentation, given the broad language on that form..... a misrepresentation I would feel very comfortable saying that 99.9% of college coaches make every single year. Did anybody watch the Spring game? I liked this format (1's vs. 1's) better than the traditional two team format. Here are my thoughts: - I don't want to hear any more comparisons between B Miller and T Pryor. He is much, much more like Troy Smith. - This freshman RB Rod Smith seems VERY intriguing. Cut out of stone for a RB. - The DL is going to give opposing backfields nightmares all season. Simon was in the backfield on nearly every play. Williams was constantly chasing the QB around. Hankins has got into better shape. And there were several younger guys who stepped up. - Etienne Sabino seems to have finally arrived and should win one of the LB spots. - TY Williams (WR from East Cleveland) is a beast. I hope he pulls it all together. Not many people have that kind of speed at 6'6 and well north of 200lbs. - Why does J. Berry not get the love from Tressel? Everytime that guy plays, he produces. Yet, he seems to be stuck at the end of the bench each year. I like him better than Jordan Hall, albeit he does not have Hall's versatility to split out wide.
  21. I like the monorail system. In some ways, I find it to be better than streetcar or lightrail for downtown areas.

The Amtrak service that runs through Cleveland, IMO, has survived and will continue to survive for one reason.... it is right on the b-line from Chicago to the east coast.
  23. I think they only have one section left of the top floor on the south side of the street and then it is done. I also would think that they have been working on many, many things inside as the framing has progressed.

^He, and many other mid-term candidates, won because people who employ scare tactics are incredibly successful campaign managers. Brain structure differs in liberals, conservatives: study WASHINGTON — Everyone knows that liberals and conservatives butt heads when it comes to world views, but scientists have now shown that their brains are actually built differently. Liberals have more gray matter in a part of the brain associated with understanding complexity, while the conservative brain is bigger in the section related to processing fear, said the study on Thursday in Current Biology. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/04/07/brain-structure-differs-in-liberals-conservatives-study/
  25. You mean Uptown? They are still chugging along. No holdup to my knowledge. Progress might be deceiving because throwing up a frame can be easy and quick compared to the detailed construction which must follow.
