  1. I'm pretty sure the shooting occurred on 137th. The guy who took one to the stomach drove off and was picked up by EMS elsewhere (maybe Dave's) and taken to Huron.
  2. Look at the aerial rendering above. I'm talking about the NW intersection. Phase I is split into two buildings in the rendering.
  3. So.... it looks like they decided against the plaza (as depicted in the above aerial rendering) on the corner of Euclid and 115th?
  4. I assume you realize that the building in the first four pics is not the same building depicted in the last pic. Anyways, no.... it is not a cladded historic building. 113 St. Clair was simply an exceedingly "blah" structure on a prime parcel. I don't think anyone has or will shed a tear.

What nationalities are the "Asians" moving into Ky? I thought NEO (especially in my nabe on the east side) was getting a serious influx of Indian (at least that general ethnicity) immigrants.... that was until I went to Concord Mills Mall near Charlotte, where it seemed like every other person there was Indian (or that general region of Asia).
  6. To be clear, you could always dock your boat right there behind the science center. All this is doing is creating designated slips....... ie telephone pole looking things coming out of the water (I think they are called guy poles) and perhaps a few finger docks so the boats can be pulled in stern/bow fists as opposed to just pulling the starbird/port up against the harbor walls.
  7. My wife made the mistake of taking our son for a rapid ride on St. Patty's Day a few years back. Definitely not a family atmosphere. She said they saw one guy vomiting and another urinating right there in the car. I was amazed at the ridership this St. Patty's Day. I happened to be driving down Shaker Blvd around noon and the cops had closed off all the parking lots from Green Road to Warrensville because they were full to capacity. I saw people walking from all over.... even what appeared to be a large contingent of party-goers walking all the way up Green Rd from Notre Dame College.
  8. What was amazing about that halftime lead is that we started out the game down 11-2..... which means we closed out the half on a 50-15 run!
  9. ^Beach Club. I went there many times. That, Bar Cleveland, and Have-a-Nice-Day-Cafe were probably the best clubs down there towards the end of the Flats era.
  10. The property owners deserve as much blame as anybody else. Signing the tenants is only one part of the challenge of being a successful landlord. You have to retain them too. That means keeping your spaces competetive to the opportunities elsewhere. At the very LEAST, keep the common areas clean, change the carpeting every now and then, and go with the double-ply. This is an issue in Cleveland hardly limited to downtown. Take the airport, for example. The bathrooms are dirty, the floors are cracked, and the escalators are beat up. It's like we have this sense of entitlement such as places like NYC or LA where LGA or LAX can look like crap and people will still keep coming through. You don't see these kinds of conditions in places like Charlotte.
  11. Needed: private developer + private financing. "We" can help fill any slight shortfalls through tax breaks, credits, incentives, grants, etc. But the horse has to come before the horse. For instance, "we" can insist that the lot at 55th and Euclid is zoned for a mixed use development replete with stores, residences, a hockey arena, and a 5 star hotel, all connected by light rail. "We" can zone it for that particular purpose. "We" can refuse variances and at least try to fight off the lawsuits which ensue (even though defeat would be nearly certain). "We" can set whatever platitudes we want, but "we" can only do so much. All that said, there is nothing wrong with advocating for those platitutes and dreaming that one day they will be within reach.
  12. ^^it depends. If it was 'mutual combat' without any serious injuries, they would likely get disorderly conduct, which is a misdemeanor, with the ultimate penalty varying depending on previous convictions. If anyone is deemed responsible for the officer's broken ankle, they are sure to be charged with felonious assault on a police officer and will face jail time. Of course, some unlucky soul might end up like my buddy who fought off 4 drunks in collinwood and was charged with a hate crime for 'racial intimidation' ^^^they don't arrest black kids in the city of cleveland? Ever been to juve court? Don't be silly, willy
  13. Then just say gangs, thugs, etc. Using the term "they" (in quotes) implies that you want to say something which you know you shouldn't. Further, I don't think "open warfare" is the right term to use. It over-dramatizes what occured. Further still, which "gangs" were involved.... or is that just an assumption? Only minor injuries resulted. No reports of gunplay or even any knives from what I heard/read. If I had to guess, it probably wasn't much unlike the brawl I found myself in the middle of the one time I went to Mardi Gras..... or the one time I was tear gassed in Akron for being too close to a melee on Mayday. And I talked to emergency responders who were down there right in the middle of this fiasco yesterday.... i.e. treating people while other fights broke out right in front of them. They described it as a "clash of two cultures", which implied to me that the 'suburbanites' were not totally innocent, although the youth certainly were certainly the cause of more altercations. They also said that the majority of the arrests yesterday were for public urination (no.... not by homeless people.... sorry to disappoint EC).
  14. "They"?..... c'mon man. This ain't cleveland.com.

I prefer to think of it as being pragmatic. But it is nothing more than my opinion and you are certainly entitled to yours. Which "new" cities are you referring to. Because I think many of the cities you are thinking of are as old or older than Cleveland. The difference is that they are at different points in cycle, if you know what I mean. But these cycles are slow. Much slower than anyone who wants to see a 180 within the next few decades would like to believe. I never said there couldn't be pockets of growth. In fact, we are seeing that now and I sincerely think it will only pick up steam as time goes on. But you also have to realize that there are many, many areas of the City that are beyond the point of no return and will continue to empty out until the bulldozers arrive. Many more of these areas than there are promising areas. We are talking block upon block, neighborhood upon neighborhood of beat up, worn down, painfully neglected wood-frame housing stock that has seen too many winters.

(clears throat). Dear Mr. Kasich, government bureaucrats don't create jobs. Rich people do. Please redirect Mr. Kvamme's salary to lowering taxes for the 'real' job creators. No czars here in Ohio please. Sincerely, the Center for GOP Talking Points.
  17. Not sure if these have been posted yet. From the turn of the century. Amazing how much more we enjoyed our waterfront back then.

Without annexing any of the inner-ring, I highly doubt any significant population increase. But I do expect a better, more productive population than what we have today. That said, I do expect that some of the inner ring will indeed be merged with the City in the coming years. Cities like Garfield Hts, Brook Park, East Cleveland, maybe even Parma, etc. are going to find it very tough to maintain their independence given rising costs of governing (which mirrors the rising cost of living, if not more) and a general unwillingness from the taxpayers to increase revenue to reflect these rising costs.

Emmie, remember that your 'quality' of sleep is just as important (if not more) than your 'quantity' of sleep. Try to cut down on the caffeine and sugar (to avoid the crashes which really do take everything out of you). Increase exercise and your energy will go up overall. My biggest problem is waking up before my alarm clock. It drives me nuts, because I can never go fully back to sleep. As a matter of fact, I find it better to just get up and not toss and turn in the morning trying to get that extra 20 minutes. One trick I can pass along is to try some natural remedies before you go to bed, like Chamomile tea (it really does have a relaxing effect). If you need some sweetner in it, use honey instead of sugar. A glass of red wine never hurts either. DO NOT use sleeping pills. They are addictive and you will have a hard time sleeping without them once you are hooked. I remember a few years back they played this soundbite from this kid from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and nearly every other word was "know'I'mean?" It was something like "so the teachers, know'I'mean, they terrible, know'I'mean, they grabbed my man, know'I'mean, held him down, know'I'mean...." It went on like that for several minutes. Hurt the ears.
  21. ^Nice. Sounds like 113 St. Clair is coming down next week.

The lake and the river are our two biggest, relatively 'untapped' assets. I was encouraged to hear Kasich point this out the other day. Personally, I think the potential for lakefront development is a little overblown (and, for lack of a better term, far-sighted) and the potential for riverfront development is understated. But the most discouraging thing to me about oft-cited Cleveland development vision is that we have to realize that sparsely filling in long, thin stretches over time (see Euclid Avenue) is not where our efforts should be focused. Rather, we need to focus (not saying ignore other areas) on allowing/facilitating natural outgrowth from areas which have real (not artificial) momentum (see downtown, UC, Ohio City, Tremont, D-S).

The one thing this whole discussion is missing is the notion of momentum. We need a spark more than anything else. Development will follow, not the other way around. The 'build it and they will come' idea only works for cornfields in Iowa. We will also do well to accept who we are and build to that identity rather than trying to dress us up as something we're not. JMO. I do like many of the ideas, even if I am not as sour on the BRT as you two seem to be... but, on the other hand, I suppose its lifespan will not extend all the way out to 2050. That is another thing I think is lost on many... that being that many developments which fit well now under present conditions will be considered outdated and ripe for redevelopment 30-50 yrs from now.
