Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
Eh... with the tunnel concept, I think it will draw more than just field trips. I agree that it SHOULD be on the lake.... but let's not start discussing the issue as if the city can dictate location to private developers. In the end, aquariums are destinations, not just some place you drop in while walking past. Shedd is on the fringe of chicago's core and you basically have to take a cab or bus to get there without much else around. That doesn't stop it from being possibly the best aquarium in the States. The question I have is what phase two will involve.

Imagine what the coverage would have been like if the participants looked like "thugs"... at least as that term is defined by the average PD reader.

Off Topic
On the way down to Richmond Va today, I absolutely obliterated a deer. My stomach is still up in my throat, if you know what I mean. F'er just jumped right in front of me on a windy part of 522S where the hillside abuts the road. Luckily was driving my wife's pilot and not my 6 or it would likely have gone through my windsheild. Her front end is high enough that the grille took the blunt of the impact at 55mph and the deer was thrown launched forward. Also lucky that my kid was embroiled in a game on my phone and still doesn't realize why mommy screamed and started crying (told her not to look back but she didn't listen). On the bright side, property damage appears to be minimal (grille and the casing around it need to be replaced) and some WVa family is probably going to be eating well over the next few weeks.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Any "riot" that ends in one teen with minor injuries and another under arrest simply because he refused to leave the mall when asked is no "riot" in my book. From the video, it appears to be a couple skate boarder types who had too much sugar. I think it is being overblown because it was Beachwood. I'm not sure which world people grew up in where teens don't fight at the mall. I know I was involved in a few growing up. In other news (sorry, don't have a link) there was a shooting at Ultra in Wickliffe and that place has been shut down. Pretty sure it was on one of those teen nights. Anyone know if this is the same place which used to be the Coz back in the day.

New UO site design suggestions
I like it as is. But I rarely cheat on UO... so I don't really have much to compare with. I do wish there was a +1 feature which would allow you to indicate your agreement with a particular post. Just something at the bottom of each post where it would say something like "the following forumers agree with this post." You could even allow guests to indicate their agreement without giving them posting privileges. It seems silly that I have to make a new post simply saying "agreed" if that is all I want to communicate. But I wouldn't expand the option beyond indicating unequivocal agreement.

Cleveland Heights-South Euclid: Oakwood Commons
Come to think of it, the "high end" residential development won't be totally out of place. Not many people realize this but there is a private brick road abutting Oakwood on the west which is lined with homes that would easily fit in on Fairmount. You have to enter the club to get there. Its also not far from the historic neighborhood to the north of Lutheran East

US Economy: News & Discussion
"Tough guy"? Why start with the name calling? I certainly can't be the first person to challenge the accuracy of your posts. And just because you post on here non stop doesn't add credibility either. Why don't you provide a teenie bit of backup once in awhile for your comments, starting with the one above, about how the states in best fiscal shape TEND to be those that are largely rural. I countered that claim initially because Illinois is largely a rural state outside of Chicago, yet it is mentioned first & foremost as a state in financial emergency. Maybe you're correct, maybe you're not, but a quick link with a few facts here & there would definitely add to the creative discussion. If you can't support the statement, perhaps your post should say "my suspicion is that ...." or "my experience would lead me to believe that...." I guess you can't cite to a single fact I have made up. I have over 4000 posts, but you can't cite to one made up fact. It is one thing to say I didn't provide support, it is another to say I am making stuff up - i.e. lying. Here is a link to projected state budget deficits for 2010 if you care to look - http://www-958.ibm.com/software/data/cognos/manyeyes/visualizations/state-budget-deficits-2010-estimat North Dakota didn't have a projected deficit. South Dakota had the smallest, followed by Arkansas, Nebraska, Maine, West Virginia, New Hampshire, Vermont, Idaho, Mississippi, Delaware, Alabama, Oklahoma. All mostly rural states. FYI, all states are "mostly rural"... even NY and California. But these states, for the most part, lack large urban cores like.... ummmmmmm..... Chicago. I didn't make that up either. Chicago is quite large. Just trust me on that one, as I don't think I should have to provide a link.

I don't like it, but I imagine one positive will be that chain link fence along Warrensville will be gone. I mean... they have to open up the land to Warrensville Ctr Rd. How else will they create an entrace worthy of retail?

US Economy: News & Discussion
No need for personal attacks tough guy. You wanna back that claim up? Show me a single fact that I made up in any thread and I will provide the backup you apparently need. Just one.... single.... fact. How many people here feel I regularly make up facts? An opinionated A-hole, I certainly can be. A liar, I am not.

US Economy: News & Discussion
If something tends to be true, that doesn't mean it is true in every instance. Which States are in the best fiscal shape? Places like Alaska and Texas, of course, due to natural resources. After that, they TEND to be largely homogenous and almost fully rural states like North Dakota and Nebraska.

Who is generally more knowledgeable about their city? -- Cleveland
Eh... not sure about that. I guess it depends on what you mean by "modern city".

US Economy: News & Discussion
Eaaaassssy Trigger. No need to get pissy. Just take a look at the states which are in the best shape financially. They tend to be the least populated (both in numbers and density), the least diverse (in all respects), with economies largely based on use of natural resources (oil, agriculture, etc.). All I was saying is that it is a lot easier to govern a state made up of people with not a wide range of demographics and values. A state like Ohio, with wide ranging differences in its various parts is much more difficult to govern than a state like Nebraska. I would think that is common sense. Maybe not. Didn't mean to offend.

It's much easier to govern when you only have a few cornfields to regulate.

This is the glass damn near empty thread, guys. Take your positive outlooks and facts back to one of the development threads.

Who is generally more knowledgeable about their city? -- Cleveland
There are, generally, two classes of "suburbanites" in Cleveland.... which is why my answer was qualified the way it was.

Who is generally more knowledgeable about their city? -- Cleveland
Impossible to verify, but my money would be on the inner-ring folks as a whole. Too many people in the City proper don't know and too many people in the outer-ring don't care to know. But there are pockets of the core which make up the most passionate of our residents, such as Tremont, OC, Asiatown, UC, Waterloo, etc.

Should Student Athletes Get Paid?
I agree and said so in the OSU thread.

Yes on the first question. I have no idea what you are asking with the second.
- What are you eating?

America is Over-Retailed - Too Many Stores
It's all about volume based sales now. Stores make marginal profits on each item, but sell enough of them to come out on top. I'm not one of those "rearview mirror" old farts.... but I do long for the past with regard to retail. I remember my family doing our grocery shopping at Deli's, a small family owned business on Noble right across from the library. Couldn't have been more than 2,000 square feet. Bob and his wife Charlene were typically at the register. Bob's brother Sam and his son, Sammy Jr., manned the butcher shop in the back. An old military vet named Nigel who knew how to turn his war scars into humor for the kids always seemed to be sweeping up. Now, we have Giant Eagle, Costco and Trader Joe's. The prices have gone down, the variety has greatly increased (as have the checkout lines), but nothing will replace that running invoice the folks at Deli's kept behind the register which my mom would pay off whenever she remembered to bring her checkbook (or whenever it fit our budget best). Shops like that can't survive anymore outside of small towns that have somehow fought off the invasion of the big box stores.

Urban Wal-Marts considered in New York and DC, Ohio next?
Yeah... like Shoe Carnival, Marshall's, and Pet Supplies Inc. It has a bigger reputation for driving private, family owned businesses out of whatever neighborhood it sets one of those boxes down in. I have even heard that they would lower their already low prices to the point of not making a profit until they had the local market cornered. Sorry, but as one of the CH folks who fought tooth and nail to prevent the Walmart from locating at Severance, I think an "Urban Walmart" in the City sounds an awful lot like a "Pedestrian-Only Dirt Road" in the country.

What are you eating?
^Screw Hardee's... in NC, you have Biscuitville and an endless supply of 24 hour diners. And Cookout too (which puts Rally's to shame). Of course, I say this now but know that my stomach went from solid iron to that tinfoil from the Dollar Store about 5 years ago when it comes to that type of food :x If I even come within 500 yards of a Rally's, I feel like I have to use the bathroom. Me... I am still trying to work my way through this xmas ham.

Should Student Athletes Get Paid?
^Well... they would need more state support without them, no? I wonder... does OSU's athletic department, in its entirety, turn a profit? We also can't forget the indirect profit the schools make. OSU is way more prestigious than it was when I was applying to college. I was accepted (but did not go) at the time, but wouldn't stand a chance now with the "FA's" littering my HS transcript :| I would argue that OSU recent leap in prestige is at least partially tied to the Tressel era. ^^^Yes. Myron. ^^^^Where do you think that money goes. It pays for better facilities, like the Woody Hayes Center... which those athletes use to greatly enhance their abilities and chances at getting paid millions of dollars someday to play a game. It pays for better clasrooms and labs, which the student-athlete can choose to take advantage of if desired. It pays for better meals. It pays for better teachers and coaches, who will help you get where you need to go. There is not some Bill Gates at the top sucking up all this money. It is being reinvested back into the school.... the school which is giving you a free education.

Should Student Athletes Get Paid?
When was the last time 105k people showed up to see a kid figure out a physic's problem? Thank you, James Caan! But I believe the correct quote involves a "biology exam" You can also flip the question on its head and ask when the last time a student-athlete invented something (or significantly contributed to the invention) that gives the University some sort of IP rights to the invention? OK.... maybe Antrelle Rolle, but how many Rhodes Scholars suit up on Saturday?
