Should Student Athletes Get Paid?
Now you're talking about royalties. Yet another can of worms. Player's names are sold on items such as jerseys and their likeness is used for things such as video games and posters. I see the overall point, but I think it would be incredibly difficult to deal with and, on top of that, I have a problem with the concept of a player saying "my jersey".... yes, your name is on it, but it is not YOUR jersey. It does not belong to you, regardless of whether you are a pro or amateur athlete. If the jersey is still in your possession after the season is over, it would be at the school's discretion (most schools allow the players to keep their jerseys. It is a piece of equipment just like their helmets.

Should Student Athletes Get Paid?
How many student athletes bring in millions of dollars to the university, directly or indirectly? How much should Kofi Sarkodie be compensated? How about Liz Hogan? And let's talk about what type of compensation we are discussing. Monthly payments? Yearly contracts? Longer-term contracts? Signing bonuses?

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
And North Carolina, due to areas like Cary (Central Area for Relocated Yankees) is now a swing state up for play in each and every Presidential election.... not just when there is a white southernor running on the left.

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
The locals in Minneapolis had mixed reactions to the Republican Convention being held there in 2008. The City suffered a few black eyes. Believe it or not, being host of these types of events can be more burden than honor.

Should Student Athletes Get Paid?
I think you are talking about two totally different things, both of which are violations of NCAA rules. One would be the schools paying the student-athletes to attend that school, such as if the Cam Newton situation were reality and whomever wanted to sign him would have to pay a $180,000 signing bonus. The other would be student-athletes, on their own incentive, capitalizing on their status as celebrities and making a profit selling their services (autographs) and/or NCAA issued equipment (rings, pants, etc.) The first situation opens a can of worms I don't think you have fully contemplated. Would their be a cap on what any individual player could recieve? Would the ability of schools to do this be limited to certain sports or divisions (e.g. DIII can't offer scholarships as is)? What happens if a star high school player busts a la Justin Zwick? What happens when a walk-on turns into a star and demands payment? Could Michigan entice an OSU player to transfer with the promise of more $$? The second situation is more controversial IMO, but the rule makes sense. Nothing stops Pryor or any other player from going out and earning their own money. They just can't capitalize on their stardom like that or what stops them from signing on with Nike while just a freshman. I played college football and had to earn my own money. It is extremely difficult, but who said life is easy? Your rent is free and so is your food. You are given a small stipend that any college kid that doesn't buy an eight-ball every weekend should be able to live with. All that said, I would be more than willing to discuss a higher stipend for D1 athletes because I know how time consuming their training is. But that would only be agreeable to me if it was applied evenly accross the board to all athletes who make that committment, not just the scholarship players and not just the profitable sports.

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
We do have a thread. And there have been strong rumors that Cleveland has all but been eliminated because our convention space is outdated and hotel space constraints. But those concerns should be null and void for 2016 ;) Nice shot of the skyline though.... if only Erieview would scoot over a bit, then the TT would be visible and that would be one of my favorite angles of downtown.

Cleveland: Warehouse District: Development and News
I always thought the Bingham was really popular but the low price it recently sold for seems to suggest otherwise. With regard to the parking lots, I think Weston is just waiting for the right opportunity. You can probably assume that they will try to get in the game for a new build hotel if CCMM/Casino/etc demands it. A project the scale of what Stark proposed is not likely to happen anytime soon. JMO.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
I also think that the Federal Grants upon which that project relied are now in question due to the shift in political power which will inevitably damage mass transit efforts everywhere. I believe KJP mentioned something about that in another thread.

Should Student Athletes Get Paid?
I agree that they (many of them) are already paid. They get scholarships and also a stipend in many cases for living expenses. I also agree that some of them are responsible for the infusion of money to the university. But certainly not all. It would create a slippery slope. Does the star football player get paid, but not the star cross-country runner? I imagine that the latter sucks more money away than he/she infuses. Not even all football programs operate at a profit. In the end though, I think the system is fine as is. Nobody forces these kids to play college sports. They can go the Brandon Jennings route if desired. They get a free education from some of the top academic institutions in the country.... institutions that many of them would stand a spitting chance of getting accepted to minus their athletic talents.

Celebrity Crushes!
I think Olivia Wilde is a bit overrated (especially being #1 on Maxim's Hot 100), but she is definitely very attractive. I just don't know why she took on the stage name "Wilde" when her birthname was a godsend - "Cockburn"

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
The Cavs waived Jawad Williams, which is not a huge surprise because his contract was non-guaranteed but became guaranteed if still on the team on January 10. But the Cavs ALSO sent Samuels to the D-League. Something's brewing with that trade-exception, me thinks...

He couldn't have given two sh!tes what else he got. I'm surprised the motor hasn't already burned out the number of laps that train made this weekend. BTW, if anyone has any Lionel O-Gauge tracks they want to get rid of or knows where to pick them up on the cheap, PM me please.

Those growth charts are not the word of god like some pediatricians would have you believe. I was in the 10th percentile in both height and weight until I was about 10 years old and I'm well over the average in both categories. IMO, the usefullness of those charts is more to monitor growth rate and make sure it is steady and not stunted as opposed to predicting full grown size.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Who suggested otherwise? Why don't you all start a thread to discuss that issue, and this thread can be left for informartive responses limited to the type Eighth and State just provided? Thanks for that BTW. I would think that a curve would make sense too. I have to assume the more urban the neighborhood is, the more innacurate the numbers are. Same probably applies once you reach a certain level of ruralness (is that a word?).

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
This black eye will have no bearing outside of ohio. Nobody in the pros cares if he sold some memorabilia (that was his to sell, btw, so I'm philosophically not seeing the problem with any of this) to get some ink. Stupid, maybe, but not illegal. That is violates some arbitrary NCAA regulation won't impact his draft status. His season, well that's another story. How much benefit will he get coming back for a half a season? That's presuming the guy who's replacing him hasn't established a rhythm/ chemistry with the team and is now 'the guy'. So then what? He's sat out a full season. This all presumes he's willing to come back and pay the $2,500 he owes to remain eligible. I still say he's gone. He was thought of as a knucklehead before this incident, which will only amplify that perception of him. As far as what is wrong with selling the memorabilia, you have to look at it from the right angle to see what is wrong with it. Suppose Pryor drives up to Cleveland and sets up a table on Public Square. From there, he proceeds to give his autograph to anyone who gives him $20. It is his autograph to sell, yet the issue is not that but why people are buying it. NCAA rules are designed to prevent the student-athletes from earning any money, by any means, that they would not have been able to earn sans being a NCAA football player. Thus, selling the memorabilia violates the rules, which are carefully explained to each and every team each and every year. If what Pryor and Co. was allowed, it would create a very slippery slope. They knew it was wrong and should be punished. Sure, they are being made an example of. Take a look at any CFB game and I would suspect there is at least $100,000 of body art on the field. If the NCAA did a true audit, it would lose half its players for the first 5 games next season, I'm sure.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
^Let it go Does anyone know what the or whether there is a generally accepted 'lab error' to cencus results? If they go just by returns and abilities of census workers to otherwise count heads, then the results are certainly under the actual population numbers. Or do they factor some equation into the final results which accounts for what will inevitably be missed? And why, whenever the issue of population/census/etc come up, it is always the same forumers engaging in the debate and with such 'hostility'? There are a lot of things to argue about in this world. Meaningless and negligible differences in population don't fall in that category IMHO. I don't know what is more pathetic, the eggers or the ones getting egged on. Whatever brings you joy. Now... if you all want to start arguing net agriculture exports, let me know!

Funniest thing I've read in a long time
IMO that's taking the easy way out as a parent. But parents do maintain some discretion which they may exercise with respect to their own kids. Teachers as well, to a much more limited extent. It's perfectly possible and reasonable that a teacher have physical contact with a student to varying degrees when self defense or defending another student or defending the student may justify it. Incidental contact during the course of the day is, of course, also perfectly fine, even if that is grabbing the kid by the arm to take him down to the principal's office. But society has clearly evolved past the point of teachers striking students as a form of discipline.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
This is a truly tragic situation: Cleveland Heights boy dies following altercation with family member http://blog.cleveland.com/sunpress/2010/12/cleveland_heights_boy_dies_fol.html#incart_mce Apparently, the boy died after his father put him in a headlock and he lost consciousness. Now check out this whopper of a comment from Kozmo at cleveland.bomb, which I seriously hope is a joke: These types of things wouldn't be in the news if parents were allowed to discipline their children - if the schools were allowed to discipline children - if neighbors were allowed to discipline children. I am 40 years old and remeber a time when I had respect for my elders because I knew I would get a whooping if I came up short. Children today know that they can get away with anything because the police and child protective services are only a phone call way. Thank the stupid liberals for all of this touchy-feely crap!

The Dating Thread
I think the key is when the friendship was developed. I, for instance, have many female friends from the neighborhood who I knew well before I ever met my wife. A few of them are close to 'sister' status, since our friendship goes back to the diaper days. I can have lunch, go to a bar, etc with these girls and my wife won't flinch. On the other hand, if I told her I was going to meet some random girl I met at the bar last night... it would be smart of me to hide the scissors.

Funniest thing I've read in a long time
I have a friend and relatives who are teachers/administrators That would just give me extra incentive. But seriously, if I have never put a hand on my kid, I'll be da#&ed if someone else does.
