  1. Redistricting "strategies" are complex and not always apparent on the surface. But I have been pleasantly surprised by the sentiment the Enquirer article expressed, which I heard somewhere else as well. I remember when there was a big controversy in North Carolina about gerrymandering. What the Republican legislature did there was create a district which was something like 2 miles wide and 50 miles long. It ran on both sides of I-85. Proponents claimed it guaranteed a minority rep because the property values next to the highway are so low. But opponents claimed it was simply an attempt to dilute the minority vote from the 10 or so districts from which it was being sliced. It was a complicated issue to say the least. I believe the Supreme Court eventually struck it down.
  2. Mark my words. Pittsburgh's recent "success", while commendable, is significantly gilded.
  3. I keep hearing about this "Cigar Cigar" shop in Rocky River. It's where you rest your ash.

Not at all. You might even meet someone you like and start the New Year off with a bang ;)

Mighty Ducks was the only other one I could think of. Regardless, it would be tough to top Slapstick.

I'll be in Richmond Va at my Brother-in-Law's house. Can't say that Cleveland is the best place to be on NYE. As everywhere else, cover charges go through the roof (at least they did when I used to go out) and the weather does not permit outdoor activities for the most part. If I stick around, I usually am either at home or go to a friend's house for a party. Best NYE I ever had in Cleveland was 2000 and that was insane. Downtown was packed. The Isley Brothers were playing on Public Square. The East Bank of the Flats was still up and running. And either it wasn't that cold or I was really that drunk. More likely the latter.

Costner is a horribly overrated actor. He will never live down Waterworld.... and he couldn't hold an english accent to save his life in Robin Hood. That said, Field of Dreams and Bull Durham are both classics in my book and I thought he played those roles very well. Maybe he should just stick to baseball? Also.... I'm probably gonna get blasted for this, but he did surprisingly pull off the bad guy in 3000 Miles to Graceland. And, oh yeah, he deserved an oscar for his role in the Big Chill ;) Speaking of sports movies, what does everyone have on top. The Natural, Hoosiers, and Any Given Sunday come to mind for me if you break it down by sports...... and Slapstick, of course, but it doesn't have much competition from other hockey movies.
  8. Hmmm.... not sure we have seen those exact renderings, but we have seen some with the exact same footprint/layout. Of course, these pictures still contemplate an Eaton campus on the other side of the freight tracks, tucked inside an expanded loop of the waterfront line.
  9. http://www.forbes.com/2010/12/16/best-cities-jobs-hiring-leadership-careers-employment.html Best and Worst cities for finding a job.... allegedly. None of the 3 C's made either of the lists. But Akron and Toledo made the "worst cities" list, with Akron tying for the top spot (I guess NCAA soccer isn't the only thing they can claim that for). On the bright side, and I mean the really bright side.... Youngstown came in at #4 on the "best cities" list. I prefer to be selective with believing and discrediting these rankings. I'm not buying Akron's low ranking, but I'm fully on board with Forbes gushing all over the Y!
  10. ^That is exactly why there are two chambers of Congress. One (HOR) is representative of population and the other (Senate) is not.
  11. ^Newsworthy? On a personal note, I received a ticket in the mail the other day from East Cleveland. Apparently, in the beginning of November, one of their cameras on Euclid got me going 26mph in a 20mph zone. I'm not going to fight it because I assume it was a school zone..... but $95.00, you've got to be kidding me.

  13. I really don't get the line of thought that not allowing this project to proceed (or not helping facilitate its ground-breaking) will help Downtown by forcing current tenants to stay put in space they are not satisfied with. Confounding. E&Y and TE want Class A space. Would you rather they moved to Chagrin Highlands to find it? Is there some kind of misconception that the City of Cleveland has the power to tell these private companies where, when and how they can relocate?
  14. An article like that does not slip by UO for 3 days. Check the Mall Renovation thread.

That's my point. I think you were SUPPOSED to start getting a sense of that change in II... even I to an extent, but HC was just that awful. He did nothing to sell that character and McGregor simply overshadowed him throughout.

I am not sure that the right actor wouldn't have given a much different spin on Anakin. The whiny brat impression I think is all HC. Think about it for a minute. Let's just assume that the first choice for each of these roles actually came to fruition and how different those movies would have been: Beverly Hills Cop - Axel Foley - Sylvester Stalone Back to the Future - Marty Mcfly - Eric Stolz Indiana Jones - Indiana Jones - Tom Selleck Dances with Wolves - Lt. Dunbar - Viggo Mortensen Forest Gump - Forest Gump - Bill Murray
  17. Huntington is a beautiful buidling in a prime location. However, it simply did not meet the needs of E&Y's and Tucker Ellis's desire to expand. They both wanted and need contiguous Class A space which was not available downtown without a new build. And to the extent they do expand, this goes beyond some "zero-sum" analogy. Growth in business districts is hardly limited to bringing new companies in. It also involves providing existing companies with the means to expand. Buidings become outdated for their original purpose. This happens everywhere. Huntington is simply too much of a gem for some developer to not do something productive with it. And, who knows, that re-purpose might draw in new downtown tenants, whether they be busineesses or residents (depending on exactly how it is re-purposed). The bottom line is we simply can't afford to sit back hoping to entice new businesses with outdated class B and C office space. And you can't totally re-purpose a building while it is still occupied (or at least it would be incredibly difficult and disruptive).

Any workplace regulations? Or does the free market just take care of all that too?
  19. Certainly that was your intent. But then why no corresponding fan clubs for Indians and Cavs?

And in the Bengals thread: Today at 03:36:32 PM I don't know about you, but that's what I call the opposite of love! :( Hmmm.... that looks more like shots at Cincy fans, not the Bengals.... you know "the Cincinnati Bengals" Try again...

The free market does not have anti-trust laws, but I don't see even the staunchest conservatives arguing for a return to the days of monopolies.

I have not said one bad thing about the Cincinnati Bengals today. I challenge you to quote me otherwise. And f^ck 'Kibbles and Vicks'..... I will never cheer for him. There is something rotten inside of him that can't be cured with jail time and community service.

Just playing along with your Mr. Technicality rules today. So much hate.... it's not good for you. At least you are eating Chick-filet and not KFC. You might have keeled over on your keyboard by now.

Why would we need an AFC Championship when we have NFL ChampionshipS
