Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Really. Compared with other convention center construction around the country, $465 million is rather modest. Chicago's west expansion alone to McCormick place is twice the cost and publicly funded. It might be easier to ask you you to find comparable projects in the last 5-10 years with a cheaper price tag.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions

Cleveland: How diverse are we?
There was a recent thread with charts, graphs and discussion on this very subject. The unfortunate truth is that truly diverse neighborhoods are a rarity in America. Countless essays and books have been written about the causes and effects of white flight. It always reminds me of what Eddie Murphy sang in his SNL parody of Mr. Rogers, which I believe was called Mr Robinson's neighborhood - (to the tune of Mr Rogers theme music) "Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor...... I'd like to be your neighbor... someday.... Problem is when I move in, y'all move away"

Poll: How much sleep do you get a night?
When I went to US for 9th grade. I had to get up early enough to walk to the RTA stop on Monticello and Noble, take the bus to the Shaker campus, then take the shuttle to the upper campus in Hunting Valley, then get dressed and walk the one mile trail to their athletic fields where the dew was waiting for me tfo plant my arse in and start stretching. It was probably worse in college in NC when those insects would be chirping in harmony just to let you know that the upcoming early August day was going to melt the gear right onto your body. What are those insects, anyways? They are out in the morning and they all start and stop chirping together

Where do you live????
What has changed in Solon that (now) makes it less desirable for you to live there? I would have thought the opposite as Solon at present is more appealing to me than it was 20 years ago. I still wouldn't want to live there, but that would be because of its distance from the core and the sprawl effect. That said, the schools are great, the diversity is excellent and the neighborhoods are relatively safe.

Poll: How much sleep do you get a night?
It really varies for me. Depends on when I have to be up. Normally, I sleep from about 1am to 7am. When I have to get up earlier, I usually sacrafice the sleep and don't go to bed earlier. What really screws with me is when I fall asleep early, as my body won't let me sleep much longer than 6 hours, if that. I hate the early morning. Hate it. That smell of dew on the grass gives me anxiety flashing back to the days that I did have to get up at the buttcrack of dawn for a variety of things I hated in life (roofing gig, two-a-days, 9th grade, etc).

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Done deal? If so, looks like we have become the sacrificial lamb in Kasich's partisan politics.

Where do you live????
Yes... the whole east side vs. west side rivalry has significantly died down. But it is still fun to joke about. How come it is the West siders that always get their panties in a bunch? And since we are on the subject of rivalries that can't be let go - shuck faker! And all the while I was trying to get into downtown, and all you motherf#ckers were blocking my way! Humph! Stupid weather men - I totally would've taken the rapid if this would've been in the forecast. There goes my 'sugar and spice' image of you, Ms Pottymouth

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
Holding it here in Cleveland won't have any significant impact on which way Ohio swings IMO. The rest of Ohio won't give a rat's arse.

Cleveland: Downtown Storefront Displays
EC, I appreciate and like being kept up to date on these projects. Perhaps you should gauge interest by the amount of views, not the responses. I always read your updates. Thanks

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
It would be a strategic blunder to hold the DNC in Cleveland.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I like JJ.... but not for much more than the way he throws it down. He is an awful defender, gives poor effort for the full 48, is perhaps the worst rebounding starting PF in the league, and the list could go on. Most importantly, he is dumb as a rock. Honestly, we should have traded him during the off-season. His value is probably half of what it was given how much difficulty he has had performing on a consistent basis despite being given consistent minutes. If you can stockpile more picks, you do that. If not, you have to get a big man in return. Hickson + our trade exception could be intriguing to a few teams. Personally, I think Iggy can be had for the right price and would fit in our system. Get them to throw in Speights or Hawes and it is a done deal. But I am not in favor of trading him for a veteran that can do no more than rise us up to the level of mediocrity.

Why did Cleveland not annex more land for growth?
It was just a general observation. Of course there are instances where it doesn't apply. For instance, I can tell when I am leaving Cleveland and going into 'the Heights' because I would be traveling up a hill...... if we really are going to be that technical. Here's the point. Drive down Monticello (without looking at the signs) and tell me if you notice when you leave Cleveland Heights and enter South Euclid (are Keystone and Quarry roads distinct enough to say which one belongs to which City?) How about driving down Mayfield Road and tell me when you leave Lyndhurst and enter Mayfield Heights. Head south on Green and see if you can tell when Beachwood begins. Head west on Cedar and point to what parts are South Euclid, what parts are University Heights and what parts are Cleveland Heights. A resident who has knowledge of these borders would be able to, but a visitor is likely to be oblivious assuming it is all one City. It is all one fabric, eventually transforming into sprawl as you get to the outlying areas of Cuyahoga County and into the adjacent counties (save for those nabes bordering the Lake where sprawl does not occur until a good bit out).

Why did Cleveland not annex more land for growth?
^And then you have crossing into East Cleveland, where the roads gets worse. But I was actually talking more about going from Cleveland Heights into South Euclid.... or Shaker Heights into Beachwood.

Off Topic
Someone forwarded this to me - EMBARRASSING MEDICAL EXAMS 1. A man comes into the ER and yells . . .' My wife's going to have her baby in the cab.' I grabbed my stuff, rushed out to the cab, lifted the lady's dress and began to take off her underwear. Suddenly I noticed that there were several cabs - - - and I was in the wrong one. Submitted by Dr. Mark MacDonald , San Francisco 2. At the beginning of my shift I placed a stethoscope on an elderly and slightly deaf female patient's anterior chest wall. 'Big breaths,'. . . I instructed. 'Yes, they used to be,'. . ..replied the patient. Submitted by Dr. Richard Byrnes , Seattle , WA 3. One day I had to be the bearer of bad news when I told a wife that her husband had died of a massive myocardial infarct. Not more than five minutes later, I heard her reporting to the rest of the family that he had died of a 'massive internal fart.' Submitted by Dr. Susan Steinberg 4. During a patient's two week follow-up appointment with his cardiologist, he informed me, his doctor, that he was having trouble with one of his medications.. ' Which one ?' .. . I asked. 'The patch... The Nurse told me to put on a new one every six hours and now I'm running out of places to put it !' I had him quickly undress and discovered what I hoped I wouldn't see. Yes, the man had over fifty patches on his body! Now, the instructions include removal of the old patch before applying a new one. Submitted by Dr. Rebecca St. Clair , Norfolk , VA 5. While acquainting myself with a new elderly patient, I asked, 'How long have you been bedridden?' After a look of complete confusion she answered . . .. ' Why, not for about twenty years - when my husband was alive.' Submitted by Dr. Steven Swanson- Corvallis , OR 6. I was performing rounds at the hospital one morning and while checking up on a man I asked . . .' So how's your breakfast this morning?' ' It's very good except for the Kentucky Jelly. I can't seem to get used to the taste.'.. . . Bob replied. I then asked to see the jelly and Bob produced a foil packet labeled 'KY Jelly.' Submitted by Dr. Leonard Kransdorf , Detroit , 7. A nurse was on duty in the Emergency Room when a young woman with purple hair styled into a punk rocker Mohawk, sporting a variety of tattoos, and wearing strange clothing, entered . . . It was quickly determined that the patient had acute appendicitis, so she was scheduled for immediate surgery. When she was completely disrobed on the operating table, the staff noticed that her pubic hair had been dyed green and above it there was a tattoo that read . . ..' Keep off the grass.' Once the surgery was completed, the surgeon wrote a short note on the patient's dressing, which said 'Sorry . . . had to mow the lawn.' Submitted by RN no name, 8. As a new, young MD doing his residency in OB. I was quite embarrassed when performing female pelvic exams.. To cover my embarrassment I had unconsciously formed a habit of whistling softly. The middle-aged lady upon whom I was performing this exam suddenly burst out laughing and further embarrassing me. I looked up from my work and sheepishly said. .. . ' I'm sorry. Was I tickling you?' She replied with tears running down her cheeks from laughing so hard . . ' No doctor but the song you were whistling was . . .' I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Weiner .' ' Dr. wouldn't submit his name.... 1 MORE Baby's First Doctor Visit A woman and a baby were in the doctor's examining room, waiting for the doctor to come in for the baby's first exam. The doctor arrived, and examined the baby, checked his weight, and being a little concerned, asked if the baby was breast-fed or bottle-fed. 'Breast-fed,' she replied.. 'Well, strip down to your waist,' the doctor ordered. She did. He pinched her nipples, pressed, kneaded, and rubbed both breasts for a while in a very professional and detailed examination. Motioning to her to get dressed, the doctor said, 'No wonder this baby is underweight. You don't have any milk.' I know,' she said, 'I'm his Grandma, But I'm glad I came.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Actually, this is a County project.... so County taxes are being used. Regardless, most convention centers are built with public money.
