Cleveland's inner-ring suburbs are not sprawl at all. Lakewood, for instance, has one of the highest (if not the highest) density population between NYC and Chicago. East Cleveland (for better or worse) has more foot traffic than anywhere in Ohio IMO. Cleveland Heights and Shaker Heights are both treasures. Moreover, the borders of the inner-ring with the City are nearly seamless. I am not familiar at all with Cincy's suburbs, but it sounds like there is quite a different set-up, at least in this regard. In all honesty, you could annex all of Cuyahoga County and it would have more of a cohesive feel than a lot of big cities. Save for the 'corporate limit' signs, you simply can't tell when you pass from one city into another.

A lot of cities have settled for that 'worst case' in the form of just a new convention center.... and at a much heavier price tag.

^I had not heard that. My understanding is that a significant amount of 3C money would go towards improving/upgrading the freight lines so that the schedules could be maintained or even improved.

I wish the property values in Cleveland compared to the suburbs would support that! On a comparitive scale, they do! The closer the suburb is to the core, the lower the home values (at least per square foot). Strong cities typically have the opposite effect.

^You're probably right. Extrapolating the distance on google maps, it appears to be closer to 3/4 mile or a full mile. Still walking distance in my book..... but, yes, for Emmie maybe only during the day and when the weather is nice, depending on how much tougher than you she is ;)

Time for a rant. Now.... I live in a fairly safe neighborhood and (yes, foolishly) don't always lock my car doors. My dog sounds the alarm if anyone even thinks about taking one step off the sidewalk onto my property, so I figured that would do. Came out to the car this past Sunday morning and found my glove box, middle console, etc. all open with any papers and other junk all over the seats and floor. Same thing with the wife's car. Looking at what was taken, it was obviously kids. They took my wife's (somewhat ancient, relatively) ipod... but didn't take the ipod dock. They took the LED flashlight out of my car but did not take my $200 sunglasses, my black leather samsonite bag, my jump-starter, my reciprocating saw, a really nice pocket knife I keep in my visor, the Subway gift cards I had, or even my wife's . So, all in all, not that bad. But here's what pisses me off (for whatever stupid reason) - they took my flashlight but did not take the case it was in. They cleaned out my quarters and f'in dumped my pennies, nickels, dimes all over the floor. They took my wife's ipod, but did not take the ipod dock it was mounted in (which just pulls right out of the cig lighter). I told the cop to let me know if he catches the punk so I can make sure he gets the case for my flashlight. Something about those two being apart kind of irks me... My dog also gets no treats for a week!

Who "praised" it for its retail? As far as I can tell, you are the one who keeps bringing that up. Even the OP you were responding to did not specifically say that his friend was impressed with the specific "retail"..... just that there was a mall downtown. Personally, I shop at Children's Place whenever I pass through because it has really good clearance racks sometimes and their clothes seem to fit my son well. I don't regularly shop in any of the other stores.... but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the place. My sole point was that visitors from out of town are generally impressed with TC. Who wouldn't be?

Eh.... I think it has more to do with suburban fear of downtown (and its elements) and knowing that TC, as beautiful and great as it is, is not what it was when it opened in terms of high-end retail. More the former than the latter.

I think TC impresses most visitors. It is the locals that don't like it.
