  1. This could be an issue. Does the article say that narrowing the river is necessary? Or is it merely preferable? I think the Feds have to be involved if they are planning on narrowing, straightening, or doing whatever to the river.

Dan hasn't gotten the memo yet. Moderate, pragmatic, reasonable minded Republicans like Voinivich are sooooo 1994. I believe we call them "Establihsment Republicans" now...
  3. But what is the general topic of the announcement? Financing secured? Groundbreaking date? Both?

Sanchez was the most overrated QB in the league before he ever dawned a jersey.... and he has done nothing to convince me otherwise. He is an average (at most) quarterback on a team with a killer defense, solid running game, and a decent receiving corp. I couldn't be more happy that we were able to trade down 3 or 4 times and still end up with Mack, who is on a few mid-season All-Pro teams.

^Ohioans can't afford a half-a-cup of Starbucks coffee per resident each year to operate it. That's the best he's got... at the moment.

He was leading the group in song - "Ding Dong! The Train is dead. Which old Train? The 3C Train! Ding Dong! The 3C Train is dead."
  7. I feel like we have had a couple of those days with this project... only to be disappointed a few months later. Let's just hope this "announcement" is not that they are hacking off the hotel from Phase I.
  8. PlayhouseSquare stars in its own real estate revival CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Behind the marquees of PlayhouseSquare, a real estate machine is chugging along. The PlayhouseSquare Foundation, which has revived historic venues and attracted Broadway shows and more than 1 million people a year to Cleveland's theater district since the 1970s, owns roughly 1 million square feet of real estate. ................................. Today, roughly 30 percent of the foundation's revenue is tied to real estate. This week, PlayhouseSquare will buy a vacant building at 1317 Euclid Avenue. Within the next two months, it will acquire a building on East 13th Street for Cleveland State University's theater, dance and arts classrooms and offices for the Cleveland Play House. By the end of this year, PlayhouseSquare will control most of the block between East 13th and East 17th streets, north of Euclid Avenue. ..................................... "We're not aware of any other organization, particularly in the performing arts, that has taken this approach," Falco said. "It's just been an evolving strategy, as we have moved from renovations of the theaters to operations of the theaters to being a catalyst for neighborhood development." http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/11/playhousesquare_stars_in_its_o.html The article goes on to discuss specifics with particular properties, such as the former Woolworth building they are set to acquire today.

Certainly doesn't hurt that our 3 toughest remaining games are at home. I am going to say that we will win at least one of those last two against Baltiwhore and Pitts
  11. Of course not "all".... but enough to make a noticeable dent in the crime rates.

^To give credit where due, Kasich paraphrased your last paragraph during the campaign. So at least he understands that.

Time change. And, yes, spending can be cut in other areas.... but take a good look at any local budget. You can't make a significant dent without touching police, fire and city services.

some would word it differently Yeah, like "once again the apathy, careless, disrespectful, and ignorant behavior of the majority of people in urban neighborhoods comnbined with the poor civic leadership displayed by core cities elected leaders is forcing urban dwellers to segregate themselves from these populations until they demostrate they can be a responsible community withing the larger social system." I'll be quite honest - I live in Cleveland in what should be one of the better maintained neighborhoods as there are a lot of responsible, caring members of the community living in the area. But the city services and utter disregard for its residents by the city of Cleveland is discouraging. I can't tell yu how many times I've called about simple issues - the same issues like picking up leaves to prevent clogging sewage drains to avoid flooded streets after big rains - but it's not like it ever gets done unless A) I do it myself or B) I call. At some point, people just want to live where they live and not have to be so engaged in these sorts of things. But in the cities, you have to work to make your community a good place. In the suburbs, you can just live there. Until that changes, you'll see voting along these lines. Bingo. I'm not playing to the city vs. suburb stereotype because there are some great/nice/clean neighborhoods in cities and some real garbage in suburbia, but yea...at some point people get sick of looking at weedy curbs. People need to take some responsibility and cities need to start respecting themselves more in general. Cities need more $$ for the services you two are demanding. It has little to do with cities "respecting themselves" and a lot to do with revenue. In Cleveland, Scrabble, you would probably appreciate Mayor Jackson's approach of a "balanced budget" over all else, even shs96's curbside cleaniless. If you want more and better services, you can't also be in the Taxed Enough Already crowd.

Imagine if Obama had said this upon being elected to the Presidency: "Please leave the cynicism and the political maneuvering at the door. Because we need you on the bus, and if you're not on the bus, we will run over you with the bus. And I'm not kidding." "And if you think you're going to stop us, you're crazy. You will not stop us. We will beat you. And that's not arrogance." I'm sure you would have kept an "open mind"

  19. ^I guess it all looks the same to you...
  20. You can read this thread - http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,17285.0.html - from the "Abandoned Projects" forum. Nothing happening at the moment which we know about.... and you KNOW we would know about it if there was something in the works.

Yeah... but we have a "lake effect" advisory. I say bring it on. Perfect weekend for some sledding at Cain Park or Forrest Hills! Personally, I like November and December snow. It gives everything that real clean look. That goes away once the new year comes around and everything gets slushy and dirty.
