  1. Eh... would it have been dirtier politics to sign the agreement now, or after (in the happenstance) he was defeated in the election and it became a lame-duck administration? Not saying he would have faced certain defeat, but (if he felt compelled to do it before he left office) this was the better way IMO. At least he will be judged, for better or worse, by the voters for making this decision.

This article gives a good, recent update.... and explains why the school board is a necessary party to the negotiations. http://blog.cleveland.com/sunmessenger/2010/10/ohio_epa_approval_gained_for_c.html
  3. Had to post this one before the editors at cleveland.com notice. A fire burned down a playground in South Euclid that was built with handicap accessibility elements. Cleveland.com broke the story and the following was placed in the caption of the photo of the smoldering remains of the playground: All that remained Monday night of the special needs children in Bexley Park in South Euclid was the smoldering skeleton. It took South Euclid firefighters about 90 minutes to get the fire, fed by plastic equipment and rubberized shavings, under control. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/11/south_euclid_firefighters_seek.html
  4. If you guys don't scoop up Randy Moss, I will be monumentally disappointed. Ever heard the phrase "like a glove"?

If there was ever a time for TJ to establish himself as a "repeat offender"...... One can dream, at least.

The latest from polling analysis sensation Nate Silver - http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/31/strickland-foley-hoping-voters-will-split-tickets/ Strickland's odds of winning are at 25% and rising according to his model.

I think that Lanci is looking at the job the way it should be viewed.... as a 'manager.' He won't be able to do much without Council. His main job will be running the administrative side of the County, not so much determining policy. He will have to act as the 'face' of the County in its dealings and has to be a "go-getter", so I think his background is relevant there. He's operated several businesses here in Cuyahoga County and knows what does and does not make the County attractive to business. As far as him being an independent, I see that as a valuable assett in trying to bridge differences among council members, which are bound to exist. Dolan and Fitzgerald are not as likely to be able to do that given their partisan leanings.

Hey! Don't tread on David's free speech rights! We don't want anybody around here resorting to their "second amendment remedies"! Regardless, 'illegal' is not the right term. Libel is 'actionable' in a civil forum if certain conditions are met, conditions which are considerably more difficult to satisfy if you are a public figure like Kasich or Boehner. Don't worry David, despite Scrabble's likely dropping of the dime, the cops aren't going to come for you anytime soon (at least not for what you wrote in this thread ;))
  9. ^I agree... and if they had knocked down a few City blocks and built something along the lines of the monstrousity (Ahuja) they are erecting in the Chagrin Highlands, I'd pitch in on the c-4 (kidding). But this design is not so offensive to urban planning for us to truly despise it. It just comes down to a matter of taste. Personally, I like how it interacts with UC.... especially the impact it has when approaching from the east on Euclid.
  10. ^It's a hospital, not a strip mall. I'm with you, originaljbw. I understand the viewpoint from an urban ethusiasts critical lense and don't mean to say for a minute that our input should not be considered.... but sometimes we just have to let hospitals be hospitals, suburbs be suburbs, and so on. When we reach a critical mass where every inch of development needs to be scrutinized, then we can start complaining about a 10 foot setback for a building that isn't even supposed to have ground floor retail or anyother interaction with the sidewalk.

I believe that grocery on Payne Ave in Asiatown is a "Dave's Supermarket". Local chain, expanding a bit into the suburbs now. The factory conversion you mention in your second to last sentence may have been Tyler Village, roundabouts 39th and St. Clair, which has its own thread (recently updated) in the NEO Developments forum. That is a really interesting project. An old elevator (I believe) factory/compound that is being converted into a "Village".... it involves several interconnected structures covering a few city blocks.
  12. Well.... there is a major difference between Hillcrest and Ahuja in terms of setting and design.... especially with Hillcrest's new addition that brings it much closer to the street. Ahuja is a tower surround by a parking lot that is surrounded by an open, undeveloped field.

Whatever happened to the "20 second timeout"..... nowadays, it seems to be there in name only
  14. The jury convicted that Warmus guy.... the one who shot the parking lot attendent near the Q last season and then claimed self-defense. Jury didn't buy his story, which conflicted with all the witnesses version of events. One more thug off the street.
  15. And, as we've discussed above, the Feds might have to be in on that deal because it is a U.S. Route (6) as it runs through PS.
  16. UC is so diverse in its architecture, I don't think there is a uniform pattern to adhere to. It is a cluster of buildings, all with their own design and architectural significance. This is only going to become more apparent with Uptown and MOCA, the latter of which is going to stick out like a sore thumb (whether you like the design or not).

I don't find it nearly as frustrating as what they do for the whole game in the NFL. Lead in - commercials - kickoff - commercials - series of play - commericals - punt - commercials - punt return - commercials - offense takes the field before a tv timeout - commercials - series of play then timeout - commercial - touchdown - commerical - extra point - commercial - kickoff - commericials..... OK.... so maybe I am exaggerating a BIT. But that is how it feels on Sundays sometimes.

Where is the "red zone" in basketball?

Like I said upthread, Jamison might be the odd man out... if we can find a 'taker' at the deadline. His trade value will probably be in the dumps by then, though. I have to admit, JJ Hickson is a better player than I thought he would ever become. He's really starting to grow up, both mentally and physically. He'll be fun to watch if him hitting those jumpers last night was no fluke. His first step is beyond fast. I'm thinking 40+ wins. We just have too many above average NBA players to be as bad as some experts are predicting. Some of those players are really going to come out of their shell the more they take on a bigger role. Boobie is one to watch there, for sure. He was solely a spot up shooter with LBJ on the court. Now, he will be a key compenent of the offense and this offensive system fits his skill set perfectly IMO. On an unrelated note, I really wish we could have closed the deal with Shannon Brown this summer. Or better yet, I wish we could have made that deal in '08 without including him. The kid is looking REAL good this year.

  21. ^As an outsider, what was your take on the scene and the issues discussed in this thread?

I was worried it was going to be like that windstorm we had in the early-mid 90's. I believe it was sometime around August or October when that storm hit. It literally picked up a 20x10 shed in my neighbors yard and blew it into our yard.... over a 4 foot fence! Sounds like it was more mild downtown today than it was out here on the east side.
  23. Is that a City owned lot?

I agree. I'm actually MORE excited to watch the Cavs this year. The regular season feels more like a challenge than a going-through-the-motions required exercise like the past couple seasons. Besides, I think it'll be fun to (hopefully) watch some real basketball instead of Lebron dribbling the shot clock down to 4 then either scoring or trying one of his "amazing passes". I don't fool myself into believing that the absence of LBJ will make the games more exciting. That said, the anxiety of "all or nothing" is definitely gone. So I get your point about the regular season and how it was simply going through the motions on the way to the playoffs..... where, once there, it was either win it all or utter failure.
