Weekend in Cleveland for 5 Architecture Students
Putting aside taste, which many have to do when talking about the Gehry building, I wonder what are considered the most architecturally significant structures in the City. Here's a few off the top of my head (not including churches and residences): - Terminal Tower - AT&T building - City Hall, the Old County Courthouse and other group plan buildings - RRHOF - Gehry building - Grays Armory - Severance Hall - CMA - (The ballpark formerly known as) Jacobs' Field - Pinnacle (just for the concept it has to be architecturally intriguing)

Cleveland Travel Notes
'Viable' and 'booming' are not the same thing. When it first opened, it was booming. Now, it is viable. Great narrative Jeffrey. You have a talent with your use of words.

Pet Peeves!
The bucks are intimidating, but it is "Momma Deer" that scares me. The smaller the baby, the more dangerous the situation too. I think I told this story before, but my 100 German Shepherd got too close to a newborn deer near the creek in the back of our house a few years ago and Momma was having that. She chased him down and jumped on his back. Not sure what would have happened if I wasn't able to cause such a ruckus to scare her off. My dog was fine... although his ego was certainly bruised as he is just used to the deer running away from him. He's a very big GS.

Careful. This line of common sense could be interpreted as playing the race card...

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
"Downplay" your views, EC? No, no.... nobody ever does that around here. Let's just clear it up. The fact that homeless people and black youths are in the square is a deterrent. That's undisputed. It deters most of the general public and most out of town visitors from enjoying the square. Now with that out of the way, let's talk about how a re-design / re-purpose / whatever can somehow deter the 'undesirables' away from public square so it can become a vibrant urban setting once again.

 Show me one post that has denied it being a deterrent.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
We already have ample roads and bridges, and as the others have said, the money for rail is earmarked for a specific use; it cannot be taken and then repurposed to other projects. It would employ a lot of construction workers, and, because it's a genuine infrastructure investment, it would build something that lasts. That stands in stark contrast to the entitlement boosts and local government bailouts that took up the bulk of the other half of the stimulus money that wasn't spent on tax cuts. Right on.

Harrison fined $75,000 by the NFL for the hit on MM according to reports. Part of the reason the fine was so high is because he is a repeat offender.

Ohio City Rentals
I can only offer this insight. A friend of mine rented an apartment in OC near Detroit Ave and regretted it (I think both his apt and car were broken into). I would stay as close to the Westside Market as you can. The area around there is great, but the area around the Lake is not.... neither is the area between OC and Tremont. That said, I think it is a great time to be moving into OC.

Cuyahoga County: Corruption Probe
^^How do you suppose that "million stockpiled" would not fall within the scope of assetts which were frozen?

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Isn't Superior through Public Square part of Route 6, aka Grand Army of the Republic Highway? I wonder if there are any Federal Regulation that would hinder efforts to redirect traffic and/or close that street completely.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
^How much will $17 million (at most) get you in terms of roads and bridges? Maybe a repair of one of the swing bridges in the Flats? This is not an either/or proposition. Despite what Kasich may be trying to sell you, we can't take the $400 million of federal money and redirect it to our roads/bridges. That money will just go to another state and that shift will not be reflected one bit in YOUR tax bill. You will still pay every penny that you would have had Kasich not obstructed the start-up. Also, consider the bang-for-the-buck. $17 million will get you a fully operational train and great (key words here, Dan) FIRST step towards HSR between Cleveland, Columbus and Cincy. It will cause spin-off development. It will likely have a deterring effect on the current 'brain drain' (the great majority of educated young people support the train). Killing the project will have the opposite effect.... but, hey, at least they might be able to add an extra lane to the 271 express lanes between the Chagrin Blvd and Cedar/Brainard exits.

^Probably falls into that line of 'distinctions' you were talking about last week that only certain people take notice of. I can't help it. They built me this way.

US Economy: News & Discussion
There is no single "liberal economic policy" You are confusing socialism (which is, at least in most part, an economic theory) with liberalism (latin for "of freedom"). The key components of liberalism are individual liberty and equal rights. From there, the views diverge within liberal factions. I hope you are not saying that an economic policy which emphasizes individual liberty and equal rights is only good in theory, not in practice. Socialism is totally separate, despite what Rush, Beck, Luntz, Morris, Palin, O'Donnell, Rove, McConnell, Boehner, Bachmann, etc want you to believe. Now take off your colored glasses and we can continue the discussion ;)

US Economy: News & Discussion
The protests are not evidence of that. The proposal to raise the retirement age is evidence that the people of France are going broke. The protests are purely reactionary and evidence of people acting irrationally to what appears to be a reasonable and necessary change to the status quo of that country. For the record, I read every post in this thread. I appreciate the insight you provide ragerunner, even if I think you only present one side of the argument and overall picture.... in a very subtle way gilded with the outward appearance of objectivity. But that's certainly your choice to make and you do make very persuasive arguments.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I think part of that sentiment is the stigma against buses and their ridership. If, for instance, PS was like it once was with Streetcars gliding through there, I don't think we would even be having this discussion. BTW, this - http://www.supremecourt.ohio.gov/rod/docs/pdf/8/2009/2009-ohio-6313.pdf - is the case I was referencing earlier about cleaning up public square and why the DCA is not allowed to do so.

US Economy: News & Discussion
We have discussed the concept of 'currency wars' and how that is/can affect the US and its economic state. Europe is having more and more unrest in many nations and a lot of it has to do with jobs, debt and the inability to generate increased income for its citizens. One action that a nation or nations might take to try and stimulate job growth is to devalue their currency so that their goods are potential cheaper on the world market. Japan is doing this in a big way and China is not willing to revalue the Yuan for the very same reason. Looking at these types of internal events in different nations can give insite into what pressures may be in play related to future economic decisions. Japan and China's continuing attempts to keep their currencies down are clearly affecting the ability for the US to create jobs to releave the unemployment rate and in turn, stabilize the supply and demand issue for housing. Its a world economy. But that is not what the article discusses and certainly is not the parts you chose to highlight. The article is about an internal debate in France regarding the governmental set age of retirement and the protests that have ensued in France following the proposal to raise that age by 2 years. It has relatively little to do with the "U.S. Recession" even if we are living in a world economy.

I suppose the protesters don't want parliament putting their filthy government hands on their pension. Not sure what the tie in between these protests and the U.S. Recession is...

Cleveland Browns Discussion
^Heard that too. League saying that immediate suspensions will be issued from now on for the most severe violations. I suspect the players' union is going to have something to say about that. My take is simple. I have no problem with Harrison's hits BUT FOR the fact that he led into them with his facemask aimed at the ground and the crown of his helmet aimed at our players' ear-holes. No football coach will teach you to tackle like that. It was just as dangerous for him as it was for our players. There is nothing wrong with using your helmet.... you just have to be careful how you use it. For example, a textbook tackle in my book is double uppercuts through the underarms and planting your facemask right between the numbers on the guy's jersey.
