Pet Peeves!
I believe Deer cause more human deaths in the U.S. than any other animal. I live right by the Euclid Creek reservation and their population has absolutely exploded around my neighborhood in the past 5 years, especially since the Cutter's Creek development tore down a good chunk of their habitat. And they are quickly growing numb to human presence. They used to run away. Now, they barely budge as you walk past.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
And then that brings up the issue of the "window washers".... and the need for a separate thread ;) I'm leaving this thread with my belief that Public Square doesn't need a total makeover. It needs some TLC from the City and some appreciation from the public. As for the issues recently discussed, I am going to build on something EC said in regards to dilluting those issues. If PS had the type of activity it should, the bums and 'undesirable' youths would not be so noticeable to those who are bothered by them.

Weekend in Cleveland for 5 Architecture Students
For architecture (and you would need a car), I have to give a plug for the Cleveland Hts - Shaker Hts border. Drive around Fairmount Blvd, North Park, etc... that whole area. The churches on Fairmount, the Van Swerigan mansion, and many other must-sees. I would also do a drive through Bratenahl to see the waterfront estates. I'm sure you have the Lakewood equivalent covered. Downtown/UC/Little Italy/Tremont/OC.... obviously.

Could Cincinnati/Dayton be in line for an NBA team?
Cincy would have to be considered if the NBA decided to expand (big IF). More likely, an existing team (like Memphis, New Orleans, or Sacramento) would be moved and the owner would have much more say in where he is going. I know the Maloofs want to move the Kings, but I have always heard that Vegas is their preferred destination. The league may not approve that move, though, due to the gambling. Other possible destinations would be San Diego, a return of the NBA to Seattle, or (believe it or not) maybe even a place like Omaha. The NBA seems to do OK in non-traditional pro sports towns, like Portland, OKC, Orlando, San Antonio, etc.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
If James Harrison does not get fined and/or suspended for EITHER of those hits yesterday, I am going to be pissed. Ward lays into Shipley with his shoulder, is flagged for 15 yards and gets a $15,000 fine. These penalties were under the relatively new 'defenseless receiver' rule. Harrison leads into both hits yesterday with the top of his helmet, 'ear-holing' our only two downfield threats, and is not flagged on either one. WTF? Spearing (leading with the top of the helmet) has been illegal in the NFL for several decades. How did the refs miss BOTH? The league office better take notice of this.

Cuyahoga County Executive
Lanci has all but locked up my vote. While it is not the reason I am likely to pick him, I do appreciate his pledge to take a $1/yr salary. If only he would pledge to stay away from the tanning booth / bronzing cream -

Cuyahoga County: Corruption Probe
Given the depth of the charges and the amount of paperwork involved, DiMora's defense would bankrupt a small nation. Plus, the Feds froze his assetts last month, precluding his ability to get a loan. While the thought of the taxpayers footing the bill (not really) for DiMora's defense is utterly nauseating, he has to have a lawyer (or his conviction would be overturned on appeal) and lawyers don't work for free. My guess is a compromise will be reached where DiMora's will be forced to file bankruptcy, liquidate his assetts, and cover the fees as best he can with the funds for court appointed defense lawyers paying the balance.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
Weird. Litt douses the Student Center with unwavering praise, but (kind of) takes the Education building to task. The consensus on here is quite the opposite, IIRC.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
No, he opposes any government (monetary) support for passenger rail. He views it as something for private business. And if it isn't profitable as a private business then the people don't really want it that badly. Is he going to use the same rationale for roads, bridges, and highways? Perhaps we can convince Obama that if he wants any shot at retaining Ohio in 2012, he has to come out against the 3-C project and make a faux attempt to revoke the federal funds. That should do the trick of turning Kasich and rural Ohio into the project's biggest cheerleaders.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
The litter and lack of maintenance is an issue the City can't overlook. I can't seem to find the story, but I seem to remember there being an issue between the City and the service department workers' union when a non-profit (DCA?) started doing clean-up and maintenance of public square. IIRC, the union sued the City, claiming that it had given away its jobs (which it was not doing in the first place). I believe it won that case too. So.... if the service workers want the job, and sues to retain it, why is the City not making them do it? Also, don't we know have cameras filming public square 24 hours a day?

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Please, please, please, don't confuse street performance with panhandling. One adds to the urban environment, one takes away from it. Agreed. I shouldn't have worded it that way, but that was my basic point.
-
Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I don't deny that it turns residents and out-of-towners off. I think we have made some steps to curb the panhandling with the yellow boxes and a general shift in the attitude of people towards beggers. Aggressive panhandlers need to be targeted. I personally welcome the ones who are at least doing something for the money (like the guy who plays music outside the Q). I also think enforcing the littering laws more strictly would be beneficial. That's everywhere, though. The 'kids', on the other hand, I wonder about. Once again, I am not saying that they don't scare people, whether just by their presence or their behavoir. But what can REALISTICALLY be done about it - the 'loitering' that is.... not any inappropriate behavoir that can be dealt with criminally. Can you really ban loitering on a public square? Is there a crime report on Pubic Square? I tried to google "gang fights" and "public square" and came up with nothing.

Cleveland: Little Italy Neighborhood Discussion
^Right. There is plenty of land to develop. No need to tear down a functional and successful urban neighborhood. The parking lot around Coltman 27 is about as big as that little pocket of houses.
-
Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Are there crime issues on Public Square? Fights? Pick-pockets? Is there even such a thing as 'loitering' in a "public square"? Isn't that kind of the idea? Are we going to start complaining next that 'they' are walking on the sidewalks?

2010 Gubernatorial Election
How does it compare to how much CNN, NBC, ABC, the New York Times, etc. have donated to the Strickland campaign? Apples and oranges, my friend. At least Fox is not trying to disguise it anymore.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Maybe Tudor Arms will fit the bill, of a 'stylish' hotel, when completed. ^^I don't know this Htsguy, but I assumed that the "green light" was given with certain reservations.... particularly, resolving the concerns of the design committtee. They probably just wanted to avoid delay when they are, more or less, arguing about asthetics that won't change the size, scope, or footprint of the project.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
I am thinking of voting for Strickland because of his "anti-business" stance :| But, seriously, the interesting part of that article was the source and size of the donation. Not surprising, but veeeeery interesting.

- 2010 Gubernatorial Election
Not really "new" news, and hardly surprising, but worth mentioning nonetheless: Murdoch says Kasich friendship influenced $1 million donation When Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. gave $1 million to the Republican Governors Association — the first of two significant contributions to help elect Republicans in November — a spokesman said that the media company provided the money because of the RGA's "pro-business agenda" and because the group supports "our priorities at this most critical time for our economy." Apparently, there was another reason. Murdoch — whose company owns media outlets such as Fox News, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post — told Politico on Wednesday night that the RGA gift resulted from his friendship with Republican John Kasich, a former congressman and ex-Fox News host now running for governor in Ohio.
