Cleveland: Cleveland Clinic News & Info
True... but isn't Huron a trauma II unit? The most serious emergencies go to Metro and its trauma I unit anyways, no? And, like I said, this may provide UH with the opportunity to become a major player in the ER business around here.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Has this article not been posted yet? - http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/10/cleveland_planners_approve_con.html It appears the exact color scheme has not been finalized. Planners are waiting for resolution of several issues, including: connections between the city-owned Public Auditorium and new convention center, traffic patterns for drop-off and pickup points, street lighting, paving materials, exact color and texture of the exterior of the medical mart, and types of benches and trash cans in the park areas. Following the article, I got a kick out of this gem of a comment from 'macheesmo' at cleveland.bomb - No need to get upset over the design of the future Medical Mart. This thing has zero chance of ever getting built. Nashville's Mart will be up and running long before we have our financing lined up.

US Economy: News & Discussion
Once again, I apologize for breaking the unspoken rule/theme of this thread - Sept. retail sales rise, third monthly increase WASHINGTON – Americans spent more money on cars, furniture and at hardware stores to boost retail sales to a third monthly increase in September. The string of gains since July followed declines in May and June. Those had raised worries that the country could be in danger of toppling back into recession. Economists caution that while the economy is growing, the expansion is not strong enough to lower face high unemployment and offset weak income growth. Cleveland: Cleveland Clinic News & Info
Outrage over trauma plans, Cleveland Clinic to close trauma unit at Huron Hospital There is outrage on Cleveland's east side over plans to close the trauma unit at Huron Hospital. "I'm hot, I'm mad, I'm disappointed with Cleveland Clinic," said Cleveland City Councilman Kevin Conwell. Huron Hospital is located in East Cleveland, and is the closest trauma unit to people who live in Conwell's ward in Cleveland. The clinic plans to consolidate the Huron trauma unit with Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights. It's part of its partnership with MetroHealth to develop a trauma system that sends patients to the right place for the right type of care. The clinic says the consolidation will improve care by having expertise in one place. Hillcrest was chosen because it has a new emergency room and has better highway access. FULL STORY: http://news.yahoo.com/s/newsnet5/newsnet5_ts3905 The sad truth is that with the population shifts of the past several decades, Hillcrest is probably a more "central" location for an east side trauma center. I also suspect that this could open the door for UH to open a trauma center on its UC campus. I hope this is not a sign that Huron will eventually be phased out. That would decimate EC (if further decimation is even possible).

STICKY: What do you want to see???
Welcome talkwithmike. You should check out the Cleveland relocation guide which I believe is in the 'City life' forum. Maybe start a thread there about your relocation and any questions. Your not likely to get as many responses here. If your living downtown, Steelyard Commons is about a mile or so to the West. It has all your big box store types. There is a small grocery downtown on W 9th, but it is expensive. Tower City has mall-type shopping. The suburban malls are more popular though.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
^Eh... I do remember Kasich saying something along the lines of his plans being to balance the budget so he could then cut taxes. Or maybe it was vice-versa. But, point being, he does realize and admit that you can't do both at the same time. I'll readily admit that I truly believe Kasich is going to attack the budget like a bull. That's his strong suit - balancing the budget. He played a significant role in that process for the Feds when he was in Congress, so he has the resume. I just want some more specifics on how/where he plans to cut... other than the $17 million a year he hypothetically would save us by obstructing the 3-C. $17 that is really the equivalent of feeding a tic-tac to a whale. And, wait a minute, would not actually be saved, but "shifted" towards roads and bridges.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
^just you wait until the conciliation awards start being issued for negotiations on new public sector safety force contracts (which normally set the standard for all other contracts). Many of these contract expire at the end of 2010 and the unions are going to get the shaft when it comes to compensation and benefits. Concessions and/or layoffs will become the norm for at least the next few years.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I like that type of runner too. Harrison never trusted the hole would be there. That was his problem in Mangini's system. At the high school level and even to an extent in college, a good RB can get the ball, survey the line, then pick a hole and go. In the NFL, with the exception of stretch/zone plays, the RB is more often than not told to go full steam towards the hole before it is even there. The speed of the game is too great for a runner to play pitty-pat with his feet in the backfield like Jamal Lewis was doing last year. They have to have faith that that the butts of the guard and tackle, for example, will be separating just as they get to where the hole is supposed to be. Of course, some RBs with ridiculous instincts and/or physical talent (e.g., Barry Sanders) can improvise on a consistent basis, even at the NFL level.

Couldn't have said it better myself ;) But.... Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, Boehner, O'Donnell, Hannity, McConnell, DeMint, Breitbart, Drudge and "the American people" disagree with you.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Yes, but Bell has had about as many carries in his NFL career as most starting running backs have in one year. I believe that is what was meant by "a lot of tread" left on the tires. Right. You are quoting MY post about him having "a lot of tread" left on the tires ;)

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I believe the term is ne'er-do-wells, tedolph. And public square was crap long before Frank Jackson took office (there, I made reading between the lines of your post that much easier for those who don't know you that well).

Cuyahoga County: Corruption Probe
Anybody else see the guy with the megaphone, his body draped in signs, standing outside the justice center yesterday? I couldn't figure out where all the noise was coming from until I noticed him standing there. Boy... he was angry! Yelling about corrupt judges, officials, etc. Shouting "y'all gettin' played like some fools!" and things like that. I had to soak it in for a minute, just for the entertainment value if nothing else. He was gracious enough to stop pacing for a minute and pose for a shot with my cellphone camera. I will try to figure out how to post that picture later.

Yes, they did. That's much better. Mods, please feel free to delete the picture if this violates our fair use policy - [X- I am not sure, but I think it does. If we figure out differently, I will repost it. Sorry, folks.]

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Intercontinental's brands include: Intercontinental, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Staybridge Suites, and Candlewood Suites. /So no I-con is not involved. :) I think you are confusing "brands" with "ownership and operation". Concord does indeed own and operate at least one Intercontinental Hotel, just maybe not the one in UC. Also related to Concord Hospitality, weren't their corporate offices formerly located in Cleveland?

Cleveland Browns Discussion
^ For a RB in the NFL, 27 can be relatively old. Most RBs only have about 5 or so good years out of college before they start to go downhill.... fast. This is especially true for the big backs that make their living 'moving the pile.'

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Maybe the PD just needs better picture quality on its website. For instance, the rendering of the new hotel in UC was much clearer and more detailed in the paper this morning than it was on their website last night.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
He's a big back. Close to 230 lbs. Undrafted out of Arizona. 27 years old, but a lot of tread left on the tires. New Orleans used him quite a bit last year in their march to the Super Bowl, especially inside the red zone. I think he had close to 700 yards rushing last year. Not much of a reciever out of the backfield.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Thought so. I keep hearing more and more about these. It appears that East Cleveland and the surrounding area is really having a problem with PCP and the users get emboldened to do things like this unarmed. Truthfully, it is a smart play if you are a criminal and want to minimize your sentence if caught, but I highly doubt that is their rationale.

Cleveland: Keeping its entertainment districts safe & vibrant
Not sure what you mean by "this". Fights inside the club beneath you? Dance clubs in general being in the area? Paulie D's "DJ'ing"? What was the area zoned for when you moved in? But since you live directly above, why don't you fill us in on the details as TBideon requested. On the general topic of this thread, I had a long talk with a Cleveland cop the other day. He says they have been told to proceed per the department's SOPs/SOGs. Looks like the NAACP had little influence over the administration.

Bike to work? Show of hands?
I ride my bike sometimes when going in on a weekend or at night.... when clothes don't make a difference. I have never biked to work for regular business hours. Plus, I need my car at the office during those hours anyways. My job is just not amenable to a car-free day.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Harrison will fit Philly's system better, where he can attempt to emulate Brian Westbrook. He just was not a Cleveland type running back. He's talented, but consistency was always a problem with him. Don't sleep on Mike Bell either. Philly acquired him in the offseason for a reason. He won't be a starter, but can be a capable backup.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I'm not sure if the renderings are just not high quality or it is the design itself causing this effect.... but doesn't something seem out of focus? I'll wait to comment more fully on the design, but "iconic" (as promised), it is not... IMHO.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Were any of the bank robberies "armed" (meaning it was done with the use of a deadly weapon).... I ask because it seems we are seeing more and more "strong-arm" robberies around the City as of late.
