Cleveland: Keeping its entertainment districts safe & vibrant
^Thanks, Doc. It seems that the residents are similarly torn in St. Louis based on the comments. I will say that the process for revoking a liquor license in St. Louis is going to raise some red flags. However, it seems like the City had its ducks in a row in terms of evidence. I would have to guess that the gunshots were probably the deciding factor. But I still don't get how a private business owner can be held accountable for 'loitering' on the street.

Grease fire.... I would be willing to bet. You know how motzarella sticks look to a drunk at 2 am.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I think it used to be.... during my time in HS (1990s) it was the biggest in the state I believe. What was it like back in the 1960's, MTS?

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
I think the point here is the apparent reason for the suicides - bullying while at school. I realize that these kids were probably already mentally unstable, but the bullying must have been quite severe. I think certain students at Mentor should be forced to participate in something along the lines of MTV's bully beatdown. There is really nothing I can't stand more than a bully... usually the kid who can't fight to save his life and just looks for the easy and willing victim to show out in front of his friends. And there is nothing I love more than when a bully gets his ass called out by a tougher kid who IS willing to fight.... talk about deer in the headlights. Regardless, one a year sounds high for any school... especially for a school of only 400 kids. I can't remember one single suicide while I was in HS. As a poster above mentioned, it can be contagious when the already depressed kids who feel ignored by their parents, teachers, peers, etc. see all the attention the victims receive.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Bullying of gay teens and the high suicide rate in that particular group is hardly a new phenomenon and has been effectively ignored by many school administrators. It has just recently become a 'newsworthy' story.... probably because some nitwit attorney brought it to the forefront and challenged the school's hands-off policy on such issues.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Mentor is too big for its own good. Twice the size of Heights High, I believe. I don't understand why they haven't split up their high school like Parma has. Regardless, this is just a case of some really mean kids being at the 'head of the class'.... I hear the football players at Mentor basically run that school and they are ruthless in their tormenting. The sheep just follow along. Levels of HS bullying, IMO, varies depending on the particular students. In my one year at U.S.'s upper school, I saw more bullying, tormenting, and over-the-top hazing than I did in my three years at Heights High. I'm sure that had something to do with the 6'5 300 pound security guards walking around Heights.... but it just seemed like the boys at Heights got along alot better and weren't nearly as cruel to the smaller, weaker kids. Of course, we had plenty of girl fights to keep the liveliness up.... in my estimation, there was 3x-4x as many girl fights as boy fights at Heights.

Japanese moving to northeast ohio - Help Please
Keep in mind that Chardon, however, is in the heart of the snowbelt and sometimes get 2x the snow we get closer to the City. But I am pretty sure that gotribe brought it up because he had an itch to fit in "equidistant" into one of his posts ;)

2010 U.S. Senate Race
I believe I would have to know someone's first name before I would consider us on "buddy" level. I had to google the name to even know who you were talking about. Sounds more like your buddy than mine.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
If I am elected governor, I am going to ensure that every single Ohio citizen is given a raise in income and two chocalate chip cookies before going to bed each night. I will tell you HOW I will do this after you vote me in.

2010 U.S. Senate Race
Like ram healthcare down the American people's throats? Yeah.... my tonsils are still sore. Is there any truth to the rumor that you had to have yours removed? BTW, I think the proper GOP approved talking point is "jam", not "ram"

John Boehner
Regardless of background, Boehner has indisputedly been a man in Washington that is not shy about taking $$ from special interest groups. In fact, didn't he hand out checks ON THE HOUSE FLOOR to fellow republicans from Tobacco company lobbyists?

Cleveland - Relocated and looking for ways to meet people
Welcome to Cleveland, ruthanna. Given your tastes, I think you will find a lot to do. One suggestion to meet people might be to volunteer somewhere like the APL there in Tremont. You could also take part in things like the Edgewater beach clean-ups (there is a thread on here somewhere). Not trying to put you straight to work, but you would meet 'good people' doing stuff like that, whereas the bar crowd can be sketchy when you don't know anyone. Just take advantage of the free events, such as CCM, and you will surely meet people. Once you do meet people, here's a couple suggestions for the East Side of town - Cedar-Lee theatre is probably the best indie film theatre in the State and the Beachland tavern might be the best indie-rock music venue in the State (several publications have named it one of the best in the country). You may also like what the Coventry neighborhood has to offer. Go explore and you will find plenty to do.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
End result is tough to stomach, but I will still take this Browns team over any since they returned in 1999. Defense played well enough to win these two games. They have basically only given up one touchdown so far, the one in the 4th quarter against TB. I love guys like Matt Roth, TJ Ward, and Joe Haden..... all physical players for their position. Something is wrong with the 2nd half offense. Fix that and we are 2-0... beating one team that handled San Diego fairly easily in their opening week and another that appears better than people want to give them credit for.

New York City: Developments and News
And the "conspiracy" grows.... :-o Muslim summit planned over NYC Islamic center NEW YORK – A proposed Islamic center near ground zero is slowly being embraced by some Muslims who initially were indifferent about the plan, partly in response to a sense that their faith is under attack. A summit of U.S. Muslim organizations is planned for Saturday and Sunday in New York City to address both the project and a rise in anti-Muslim sentiments and rhetoric that has accompanied the nationwide debate over the project. ....................................... But Shaik Ubaid of the Islamic Leadership Council of Metropolitan New York, one of the groups organizing the gathering, said he has a growing sense that some American Muslims who initially had trepidation are now throwing their support behind the plan. "Once it became a rallying cry for extremists, we had no choice but to stand with Feisal (Abdul) Rauf," he said, referring to the New York City imam who has been leading the drive for the center. Groups scheduled to participate in the summit include the Islamic Society of North America, the Islamic Circle of North America, the Muslim Alliance of North America and the Council on American-Islamic Relations. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_nyc_mosque Worst part about this is I hear they are using the "White Man's" conference room.... you know, the one where "the Man" meets and conspires to hold the Black Man down. Do they have no decency?

US Economy: News & Discussion
Right. The jump in the value of real estate between the late 1990's and right before the crisis is really what got us into this mess IMO.... couple that with the fact that it became monumentally easier for individuals to buy homes they could not afford and disaster struck. Of the markets I was aware of, the price of real estate nearly doubled in the time period I reference above - i.e. my house in the Heights sold for $79,000 in 1997 and was re-sold in 2005 for $139,000. Just your basic three bedroom, 1 1/2 bath home in a fairly average neighborhood on the desirability scale.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I was speaking more towards Pittsburgh, than Cincy with the rock bottom comment (I realize that was not clear). Cleveland and Cincy are so different, it is hard to compare the two on any level. They were developed under different circumstances, at different times and are dependent on different factors. My point is that there is no permanent placement on these lists as the 'dumb-ass list' would infer. Cincy knows that.

I always thought of Kirtland as kind of rednecky... but, admittedly, my only interaction with that city is the fact that one of my best buddies works for a tree service that is based right off Rt 306 and he works with a lot of... well... rednecks. The old village also gives me that country vibe.

I think the lights are just to discourage squatters and might be a requirement of the county and/or city. I don't think any work is currently underway.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
^That's the area I am talking about. The Wade Park, Magnolia, etc. area. I sh!t you not, when my dad bought his house in the Dilworth neighborhood in Charlotte 20 years ago, things looked fairly similar. Now, it is one of the more desirable neighborhoods in the entire country IMO. When he bought, it was somewhat of a trendy idea, but not that popular yet. Prices ranged between $200,000-300,000 for the nicer homes and much less for the shacks. At present, families buy homes and/or lots there for 1/2 - 1 mill and put another 1/4 - 1/2 mill of renovations and updates into them, or just tear down the existing structure and build anew according to some very strict neighborhood guidelines intended to maintain the historical significance.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
^^Considering that it is often explicitly listed as a factor, I would say it plays a rather large role. I really don't mind the bashing of the status quo. Cleveland was certainly in a bit of a rough stretch, but is coming out of it quite nicely IMHO. As was stated above, if you put the same lists out 10 years ago which purport to predict some kind of permanent death of a City, Pittsburgh and Milwaukee would have certainly been listed.... Baltimore and Cincy probably too. But those cities simply hit rock bottom before we did and have done an admirable job of.... ummmm.... not 'dying'
