  1. Suffice it to say, I think the divide (if there is one) gets bigger the further south you go.... as one can logically assume it naturally would. There just is no clear dividing line. There is no line where 'Akron' starts and 'Cleveland' stops. I think some Akronites do not care for Cleveland. Some I know love it. I know people from Akron who frequent our attractions beyond sports. On the other hand, I think most Clevelanders have no particular feelings about Akron one way or the other. Perhaps moreso than Akronites, we view NEO as a region. For instance, if an Akron team was playing a Cincy team for the state championship in HS sports, I would think that most Clevelanders who have any interest are rooting for the Akron team because they view it as a NEO team. I am not sure how Akron folks would feel if Glenville or Iggy were playing. We root for UofA. We root for the Aeros (naturally with them being our AA team). There simply is no animosity from Cleveland directed at Akron.... the other way around may be a different story (especially if you read between the lines of JM's post ;))
  2. I think there is some animus in the inner-city black community, so I am not suprised by LeBron's comments and believe them to be truthful from his perspective. But its not like a 'rivalry'... it is like he said; that the "city" kids from Cleveland tend to look down upon their Akron peers. But there is no 'divide' IMO. Sports is a major connector. Akron and Canton are both solid Cleveland sports towns, unlike Younstown which is half-half with Pittsburgh so close by. Businesses also have significant connections between Akron and Cleveland, as their operations will usually include both areas jointly or they will have offices in both cities. Northern Summit County is also much, much more connected to Cleveland than the central and southern portions. Those communities are pretty much Cleveland suburbs. But the reason there can be no clear answer, is because there is no clear geographic dividing point between the Cleveland area and the Akron area.... its more of a gradual transition from one city to the next.
  3. Looking at the situation from the developers' standpoint, wouldn't it make sense to try and line up the competion date of this project with that of the CC/MM and/or the Casino? I disagree with the notion that the structure is an eyesore (scaffolding or not).... but maybe that is just the UO in me.

Make no mistake about it, the Rams woke up this morning and knew they played the Browns. We hurt at least 5 of their players and rattled a few more. It might not be the best team, but this is undoubtedly the most physical team we have had since the late 1980's
  5. How exactly do you plan to do that? Which employees specifically are you speaking of? Cops? Firefighters? Service Department? Teachers? All of the above? Teachers, definitely. They make substantially more than their private sector equivalents (and I've heard--and rejected--all the arguments as to why that disparity is justified because of the different "environment," "lifestyle," etc.). Police and fire, depending on how much they're currently making (and how much their wages have risen faster than inflation since public sector unions were allowed, which wasn't actually all that long ago). In both cases, defined benefit pension plans need to go, and the government shouldn't be contributing more towards employee health and other insurance benefits than the private sector norm, particularly for teachers. (Police and fire may--may--be different because of the fact that they are in professions that deliberately put them in harm's way more than most other professions, though there are definitely some hazardous private-sector professions as well.) OK. That answers "who"..... but what about the "how"? Do you take eliminate SERB, yank Chapter 4117 out of the Revised Code, become the 3rd state without public employee collective bargaining rights?

Kasich or Strickland. Strickland or Kasich. Why do I feel like I am being forced to choose again between Bush (pre-war) and Gore? Not a big fan of either, but I agree with the above comment that Kasich is just too far out on the wing. In all likelihood, unless Strickland says something that actually excites me, I am going to be relegated to choosing between the lesser of two evils IMO. For what it's worth, I think a very moderate republican would serve our state best at the moment. However, I don't think those types exist anymore.... the last one may be in the White House right now.

I'm pretty sure "whoa is me" and "woe is me" have two totally opposite meanings ;)
  9. If you are worried about 'drunks' being outside your window at night making noise, then you might find that condition more prevalent at WT Grant from people hopping between the watering holes on E 4th, Euclid and the Warehouse District. There will be a lot of foot traffic right in front of the building at night time.
  10. Interesting. I had heard that the residents of 27 Coltman were thinking about suing the developer if this did not get cleared up. Apparently, from what I hear, promises were made at point of sale regarding the issue of ownership of the land and this lawsuit really threw in a monkey wrench.
  11. Someone told me that Danny Greene's car exploded in the parking lot outside the medical building on the NE corner of Cedar/Brainard. True?

Oh God, I hope not. He would do for Ohio's image what Pelosi has done for California's. And I'm not saying that it would be such a bad thing if the GOP took back the House because I think some more balance would help lower the vitriolic atmosphere in DC. If that happened, however, I would prefer Speaker Ryan... even Speaker Cantor. If it's Price or Boehner, you can expect the divide to get bigger. Those two are good at one thing and one thing only - disagreeing.
  13. This is what I've been saying. It is the only way, IMO, to make retail work on E. 4th at the moment. It has to be a "while I'm here" type of store to survive.

Ironically, allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire by their own terms (i.e. declining to extend the cuts) for the top tax bracket is one of the main components of how HCR will be 'paid for'
  15. Sawyer's cooking isn't my cup of tea, but I can understand why people like it so much. Congrats to him! Way to rep C-town.
  16. All areas of this forum are active. We try not to be repetitive, so go back and read the threads that peak your interest. Just because we haven't talked about something in a bit, doesn't mean it isn't still going on. Check out the Restaurant, Local Events, and Entertainment forum just above and you will find helpful threads like this - http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,22979.0.html
  17. Is WT Grant above Jimmy John's on Euclid?

5 in a row! Pass coverage looked suspect, but then again... GB does have one of the best passing games in the league with plenty of options for Rogers to utilize. Every other asset looked pretty good. Run defense was impressive. I love how the 1's marched right down the field on offense and scored. Evan Moore is going to really come on this year, I feel. TJ Ward is a player. We haven't had a safety like that in a while. Alex Mack continues to get better and is destined to be one of the best centers in the league IMHO. Vickers is still doing his thing. We're fine with either Delhomme or Wallace. Both can play much better than anyone we had back there last season. The negatives were the corner play and Colt McCoy's passes beyond 10 yards. The running game didn't blow me away either but GB is tough on D in their front 7. I'm ready. Football every weekend from now until the week before the Super Bowl!
  20. I am in 100% agreement with the Gerson quote, Jskinner. And great question too.
  21. Yes, he calls Ground Zero "hallowed ground" as it is. No, he never even came close to saying "we must build a mosque there" That's your ears playing tricks on you again and/or you relying on other people's misinformation. He never even says that he is in favor of a mosque at ground zero. All he said was he was in favor of the right/freedom/liberty (remember those words?) to build a mosque at ground zero. He is in favor of the right to freely practice one's religion within the bounds of the law. BIG difference than him saying "we".... "must".... build a mosque there. I guess you disagree with him.
  22. So..... is the issue the fact that there will be a mosque put into a community center at ground zero? Or is the issue with who exactly is funding the project? I think people have every right to frown upon it, but the simple fact is that freedom and liberty must prevail over others' feelings. If you can burn an American Flag and if you can carry around racist signs at large political rallies, you can build a mosque wherever you can build a church or synagogue. BTW, I think this pretty much closes the book on Scrabble's claims to be in favor of "liberty for all!" Like I said before, as long as the end result is the same, the far right doesn't care what rationale you use to get there. The most offensive thing about this whole debate is an attempt to frame it as an "us vs. them" issue. This isn't the muslim world building a mosque.... it is private developers who hold the legal right to develop that land. If the zoning laws stated that ground zero was to remain as is as a memorial to those lost, no mosque. The PA or whoever has authority over the land has chosen to develop it and there is nothing that would stop a private developer from putting any kind of reigious institution they choose.

Maybe you can get an answer out of him on this one - Boehner refuses to pay for tax cuts

  25. Obama throws support behind controversial Islamic center ........................... "Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country." "That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances," Obama said ........................... Bloomberg compared Obama's speech to a letter President George Washington wrote in support of a Jewish congregation in Newport, Rhode Island. "President Obama's words tonight evoked President Washington's own August reminder that 'all possess alike liberty,' " Bloomberg said in a statement. ........................... "This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable," Obama said. "The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are. The writ of our Founders must endure." http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/08/13/obama.islamic.center.support/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_cnn
