Cleveland Cavs Discussion
BTW, I have been one of the biggest doubters of the whole Delonte/Gloria thing. While I still think there is some element of the "telephone game" to it, my wife met someone who works with the Cavs yesterday and he confirmed that something went down along the lines of the rumors. I won't say who it was who told her that, but I will say that it is someone whose name would be recognized by anyone who reads this thread.... not some ticket rep or dance team member. A very prominent figure in the Cavs family.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I am, but if someone doesn't want to be here, why keep putting them in the spotlight? The best bet is to ignore them. I told my folks over at the NBA "don't ask me anything" since his "decision". He doesn't exist in my world. I'm more concerned about the CLEVELAND CAVS and what's their rebuilding/developments are. Because many around here are trying to shine a negative spotlight on him. And it is working. His favorability rankings have tanked. He essentially went from untouchable golden boy to villian in one summer.

^^Are you suggesting that all of the establishments on West 6th have dress codes requiring men to wear slacks? Dress codes are not the answer IMO.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
^Not true re the immunity point. The union would have its grievance rights which are set forth in the CBA's. They also have administrative appeals to the Franklin County court if that is the proper route to take. They also may request that SERB file unfair labor practice charges if the City/Village/County/State unilaterally alters a contract or refuses to bargain in good faith. Sovereign immunity moreso protects the governments from actions of discretion. It is not discretionary for the agencies to collectively bargain. They have to per Ohio law. It is also not discretionary for the agencies to adhere to the provisions of the resulting CBA's. This is why we have SERB, SPBR, Civil Service Commissions, etc.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
The people of this state can pass any Constitutional Amendment that does not violate the Federal Constituiton or conflict with defined and exercised Federal powers. They could pass an amendment that forbids the legislature from compelling the state and the political subdivisions to collectively bargain with public employees if they want, although such conditions only exist in two other states. Forbiding the subdivisions from doing the same would be trickier because you have the Home Rule issue to deal with.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Look, you can't tell a private property owner that he can't have a hip-hop club in his building if the area is zoned for clubs. You just can't. You can seek to declare it a public nuisance and shut it down if you PROVE it to be one, but you can't just rule that hip-hop is not allowed on West 6th. A private owner can have a dress code in their particular establishment if it is evenly applied, but you can't have a dress code for West 6th. There are possible solutions, but you have to be reasonable and not damn a whole community for the actions of a segment of that community. Now, I have said that I am not familiar with what is going on in the WHD this summer, but I know it was never peachy and a big lovefest ever since the flats closed down. It seems, judging from the comments here and on cleveland.com that we are dealing with a trend that is plauging society right now. It is the mass congregration of kids (teenagers) who shouldn't be there in the first place. A negative consequence in the age of social media. It is akin to the flash mob thing that CH experienced at Severance Circle a month or so ago. Never underestimate the stupidity of people in large numbers.

^^Interesting, I have heard quite the opposite about the French Quarter during closing hours. I know they step up their presence during Mardi Gras, but there still certainly are fights and other disturbances. They have had to shut down the street during that event sometimes when the crowd gets out of hand. I have seen the same type of behavoir at the Mayday even in Akron for sure. Only time in my life I have been maced and all I was doing was trying to get off the street and back to the house we had set up as 'base camp' for the night. The cops just sprayed it to disburse the crowd. On another note, feeling unsafe and being unsafe are not always the same thing. There are more angles to this than just unruly blacks, which there certainly are. I just hope the neighborhood does not go down the drain due to unwarranted fears. Does anyone deny that MANY whites are, justifiably or not, intimidated by black youths? People have to realize that fear shows on the outside and bullies, regardless of race, identify and capitalize on that fear. They can smell the fear in a a sense just like a predator can. Most (but not all) bullies are not actually looking for a fight. They are looking for the guy that sucks in his chest, slumps his shoulders, and looks down to the ground while passing. They want to embarrass you and who off in front of their friends, not fight you and risk getting arrested. If they do insist on fighting, all I can say is I hope (win or lose) you make sure they KNOW they were just in a fight.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
^^Yes, CBA's expire, but then the duty to negotiate arises. Good faith negotiation is the key term here. Sovereign immunity does not protect the state or any of its agencies from unfair labor practice charges. And with safety forces, they can't strike and the government can't lock them out, so once impasse is reached in negotiations it goes to SERB's conciliation process, each party makes one last, best and final offer, and the conciliator picks one or the other on each issue at impasse. It's a complicated process and is a legislative issue a governor can not realistically campaign on.

I know nothing, but I would be shocked if it was a grocery. Mark my words, it is going to be a "...hey, while I'm here..." type of store... if you know what I mean.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
^^Right. It is a douchebag issue and, to an extent, it comes with the territory of this type of scene. It just sounds to me like, contrary to what Forbes is saying, the police aren't being aggressive enough. On the other hand, I don't know what you mean by "some are exempt from the laws/rules"..... are you saying the opposite of what Forbes is saying - That the authorities are not enforcing the rules/laws against Blacks, but are against other races? Or are you just saying that is what Forbes desires (but is not reality)?

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
To be clear, there are white douchebags in the WHD. When the WHD first really came about, it was more of a sophisticated, lounge crowd. Now, it is a nightclub scene. If you go there, you should expect to encounter drunks, witness fights, see drug use, etc. just like you would see on any district in America that has this type of club scene. The more popular it gets, and the more crowded it gets, the more we will see this type of behavior. Its something the City will never be able to totally rid itself of no matter what the crowd. But I am in favor of an extremely heavy police presence during peak hours. That is the best they can do. And given the NAACP's approach, I would recommend that the City put cameras up covering all angles of the neighborhood so they have some kind of documentation of the behavior justifying any arrests made.

^Judging from the comments following the article (and I usually don't put a whole lot of stock in Cleveland.com forum comments, especially when the issue of race is involved), it seems that your opinion of how things have gone this summer is pretty much the way everyone sees it. I have not been to the WHD at night this summer, so I can't speak to it. I seriously hope this great entertainment district does not go the way of the east bank. Have some balls Mayor Jackson and tell Forbes to piss off.

I second the thought that you should enjoy the time when they are not mobile. While it is fun to run around and play with them, or ride bikes, or go to the park, or whatever, it is not fun to do so for hours upon hours with little to no rest. I look at infants now and think back to the good ole days when they would sleep half the day and eat and poop the other half.

Moving downtown next year
I like Statler Arms, but I hear the quality of the units can vary. No opinion on the other two you mentioned. As for other suggestions, 1900 Euclid Avenue (right across from Cleveland-Marshall) might fit your price range. They have one bedrooms and some good amenities, like underground parking, in-unit washer/dryer and high ceilings. I know people who really like living in Crittenden as well and I believe you can get a 1 bdrm in that price range. Actually, I think there are a few members of UO that live there.

Ahhhh.... the old Spy Bar / Lust issue rears its head again. Forbes is drawing some connections that are not there however. He says his grandchildren were denied entrance to a WHD bar for wearing shoes that other white patrons were wearing. WTF does that have to do with the police and crowd control? That is a matter which he needs to bring up with the owners, whether privately or through legal action.

Survey: Most Ohio college students plan to leave
The recession has definitely affected the availability of entry level positions, and not just in Ohio. Qualified candidates who were hired prior to the recession lost their jobs and the new college grads have to compete with those individuals and their accompanying experience for those entry level positions. Once again, this is hardly unique to Ohio. I am more than 5 years out of school and have no interest in switching jobs at the moment. However, I have been offered two positions this past year. My wife is almost 10 years out of school and she does want to switch jobs. She has been offered 4 jobs in the past few months but none have been the right fit. On the other hand, my brother is about to graduate from college and it is not looking too good for him. He will probably have to take something outside of his field for the time being.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
So... we cut money out of all those programs? How much? What prisoners do you release since we are already over capacity? Personally, I would be all for releasing drug users and not spending anymore money on them. But we already have programs such as IPP which is intended for early release and the judges (who have the final say) are frustrating that goal to some extent. To really cut prison costs, you'd probably have to re-write a lot of the Revised Code to take away certain discretion of judges who like to campaign on the "tough on criminals" mantra. How much do you cut WC benefits and what conditions do you disallow? If you have any experience with this, you know it is a mess that has no easy solution. I still say we should root out the fraud before we re-write the system. If you cut local government subsidies, won't that result in an increase in local tax collections to maintain local services? Or are you proposing that local governments start to cut back on their safety forces and other services to compensate for the decreased revenue? Lower levels of services surely is not going to attract more residents... especially in urban settings where its not a "burn your leaves in your backyard" type atmosphere. You do realize that a lot of pay scales of state workers are set by contract and not at the discretion of the Governor? You can't just arbitrarily cut pay scale... it has to be done through collective bargaining in many circumstances. You would open the floodgates for litigation and bring down the quality of applicants for employment at the same time. Just a few thoughts, for starters.

Generally, I agree. My son was two days late and, even then, the labor pains came out of nowhere. My wife was just fine until I had a big whole in the front of my house replacing my door (yeah, I know, I know) and she told me she felt contractions. Then, it was 22 hours of labor and a sunction cup before he eventually made his way into the world. My sister just gave birth a few weeks ago and things went different. Her water broke and she had to go to the hospital well before she was actually in labor. Once the doctor said to start pushing, it was 7 minutes before my new little niece showed up. The nurses at UH said it was the fastest first time birth they had ever had.

BTW, I don't know if anyone picked this up, but James Gammon, who played Lou Brown on Major League died a few days ago "You may run like Mayes, but you hit like sh!t." http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/James-Gammon-played-Lou-Brown-in-Major-League-?urn=mlb,256597 I just was about to post it. So what's the solution for Ohio. What government services can/should we cut in order to lower the tax rate or eliminate income tax altogether and yet balance the budget at the same time? Not looking for generalizations. Be specific.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
My expectations are tempered, but expecting more than 7 wins is not "insane" IMO. It is optimistic for sure, but hardly out of the realm of possibility. They certainly have momentum going into the season. Now, they do have to play a rather tough schedule. Our Division will be as tough as ever. We also have to play the teams from the NFC South (Saints, Falcons, Panthers, Bucs) and the AFC East (Pats, Jets, Dolphins, Bills). Our schedule is rounded out by playing the last place teams from the other two AFC divisions (Chiefs and Jags). In order to finish .500 or above, I would say we have to win AT LEAST two division games, but more likely three. I think we are going to see gigantic leaps in our secondary. The safeties will be much better against the run and never were great against the pass anyways. The corners should be greatly improved in both areas though. If Brown or Haden can take on the other teams' #1 recievers that will allow Wright to be the #2 cornerback and take a lot of pressure off him. Getting McDonald off the field for running plays is an improvement by leaps and bounds all by itself.
