And yet cd-cleveland still managed to beat you by nearly a minute smart-alec ;) I was hoping the district extended north of Woodland. I suppose the location choice makes some sense considering the limitations.

You mean the one that pre-dates his birth by 20 years? Our sins pre-dated JC's birth by more than that.

2010 Gubernatorial Election
When debating high-tax or low-tax states, I think we need to stop comparing Ohio to states that have either the natural resources or level of tourism which generate revenue for the State's budget not seen here in Ohio. Alaska is allowed to have a negative income tax because of its natural resources. Texas can give its corporations tax breaks because its exports generate so much money. Florida is allowed to have no income tax, in part, because of tourism. Ohio does not have those advantages. What entitlement programs does Ohio offer to its citizens that these states do not? You also can't compare us to a state like Nebraska because our population is so much larger, requiring more roads, services, etc. We should follow the models (if any) which are comparable, such as Michigan, Illinois, etc., if there are any that actually work.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
If the traffic at the CH location keeps up and Lakewood's business is not dilluted, it wouldn't be a bad idea. Even though it is a really 'heavy' meal, which usually acts as a deterrent for me, I have to admit (after eating there) that its popularity is well deserved. I believe that CH does allow overnight parking in certain parts of the City but you may have to buy a permit to do so. I know in certain areas of the Coventry neighborhood you can park overnight. A buddy of mine rented a unit on Mayfield right near Coventry about 5 years back but did not purchase a space in the back of the building. He was able to park on Mayfield overnight free of charge but, if he was on the north side of the street, had to get up early enough to move the car to the other side of the street before rush hour hit. The cops arrive right when the rush hour parking prohibition starts. And just an FYI, but if you find yourself stuck in CH overnight and need to park on the street, call the non-emergency police dispatch line and they will grant you approval to leave the car out on the street.

PM me next time. I hate to see you waste long days on a multi-hundred dollar contract. I can pop one of those together on a napkin for ya in about 2 minutes ;)

Nobody is saying "tear the neighborhood down".... or the more extreme, drop a nuke. The neighborhood is not beyond hope. However, we always piss and moan about piss-poor 'planning' and this is an example of that IMO. If that neighborhood recovers it will be because of an outgrowth from any success Midtown has over the next 50-100 years. Putting this market at this location is like feeding a tic-tac to a whale. It's urban sprawl when we should be putting something like this in a neighborhood that has real momentum (i.e. UC) or at least the potential for real momentum and immediate spin-off development (i.e. Midtown, Waterloo, Asiatown). If I had any influence over this non-profit group, I would beg them to reconsider location because the concept is spot on for the eastside.

I don't know if it is broken, but if it is and based on past precent, I wouldn't hold onto any hope. The City does not have a good track record with bringing broken fountains back on line.

Honestly.... no. Not this neighborhood. Thanks for the photos though. I wish they wouldn't have torn all that history down.

Coming back to Cleveland - Advice on Neighborhoods
Good choice. Give 'Via Van Aiken' a try. Good little restaraunt. Fairly new. Reasonably priced and nice atmosphere (considering that it is in a strip mall). I also recommend Corky & Lenny's just down Chagrin past the I-271 entrance.... good place for breakfast/brunch/lunch. http://www.corkyandlennys.com/

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
I would have guessed some type of local souvenir shop (perhaps sports related) but Mr. Mayor makes a good point about WRL's involvement and what clues that offers. It's about 2,000 sq. ft. on each floor. Two floors, so a total of about 4,000 sq ft. So.... is it going to be one store or will it be a semi galleria or maybe a smaller version of La Plaz in Beachwood?

Cleveland: Maingate Market Place
It really has nothing to do with "succumbing to fear" for me. The location is wrong for so many reasons it is hard to list them all and it has nothing to do with the vagrants and what some percieve as thugs (=black youth in anything other than church clothes) we see in the WSM area or downtown. I am not against this project going in a "rough" area. But I would prefer a location with real potential, which I find completely and totally lacking in this area. This project really could be a catipult for the right neighborhood. However, 55th/Woodland/Kinsman is not the right fit. It is not a good walkable neighborhood and that intersection in particular is a pedestrian nightmare. There are no other attractions that people would be in the area for. There is no density in terms of residential or retail. It is a commute route and that's about it. Plus, I would bet that the local residents who do live there generally don't shop at places like WSM. So many, many other vacant lots littered throughout the east side and I'd be hard pressed to find a worse location. JMO.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
Nobody knows how big this space is? Very hard to tell on this strip due to its history as our original theatre district. Potentially, it could be very large or it could be a rather small space.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
^^Downtown needs maybe ONE large convention sized hotel. More than that would definitely be jumping the gun at this point. ^That garage is not a new build. The lot you are referring to is where the Hippodrome theatre was located (prior to demolition) and is privately and separately owned. No development plans currently.

I respect all those points MTS, but I still think this is a horrible location. Just horrible. It is not easily accessible for many east side folks. I could probably make it to the WSM in about the same time it would take for me to get to 55th/Woodland. If you think about it, you can get from this location to the WSM in about 10 minutes, so it is not that much more convenient for those who would live closer. It actually seems like it would serve/intrigue people driving from Hinckley to work in UC more than it would someone like me who just doesn't go into that part of town that often and, when I do, it takes me 20-25 minutes to get there. I also have no hope for that area becoming anything close to vibrant. Stable perhaps. But not vibrant. If a city has to have a ghetto, the south side is where ours should be. No more housing projects on the lake or Downtown or along the Euclid Corridor. This is where they should go and there is plenty of land for it. If this project does have potential to help facilitate revitilization of a neighborhood (which I believe it does if properly placed), I would much rather see it in Midtown or, better yet, incorporated into a project like Uptown or maybe even in the Lost Triangle just east of there.

Love the idea for something similar to WSM on the east side. Hate the location. Really hate the location.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
Yes. I have seen them out in the middle of the night. Although I don't recall ever seeing them on a side street during those hours and, admittedly, it is not a common sight (but street sweepers in general are not a common sight around here). Plows and salt trucks definitely do come in the middle of the night... at least around me they do. But, I'll agree that it is probably more blight than anything else I suppose.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
Yes, it is a revenue generator, but CH has an operating budget of over $50 mill. A couple thousand bucks is not going to make THAT big of a difference. I still think it is mainly a maintenance issue, but it also discourages blight as you noted. For example, people can't leave the cars they never drive out in front of their house (think how Nick Nolte stashed Eddie Murphy's Porsche in 'Another 48 Hours').

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
It's not just a Cleveland Heights thing. Shaker has the same laws too. So does South Euclid, Lyndhurst, Beachwood, etc. I'm not sure of that foreign land on the other side of the Cuyahoga, but I know of no east-side suburbs that DO allow parking on the streets after 2 a.m.? (except maybe EC). Regardless, I don't follow your logic. Why would Cleveland Hts. want the "crappy cars" on the street during the day, but not the night? And by that line of reasoning, wouldn't it stand to reason that Beachwood would allow their residents park on the street to show off the 'Beamers' and 'Benzes' and demonstrate what a nive community they have?

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
1. Other than the certain defined roads, you cannot park on the street anywhere in Cleveland Hts past 2 a.m., regardless of day of the week. 3 a.m. in a few circumstances. It allows the roads to be plowed, swept, etc. without worrying about parked cars. There is a noticeable difference in cleanliness for cities that don't have those rules IMO (e.g. Philly). 2. Don't know, but probably just a pay processing center. Cleveland Heights hands out too many tickets for the clerk of courts to process all the mail-ins :) I would guess that many municipalities probably use the same service to increase revenue by not having to have government employees perform those tasks.
