  1. ^Thanks. I believe Plymouth Church (my mom's church) is right on the border and anything east of there is Cleveland. I remember that Mayor Campbell lived in one of the first houses over the border, which is why there was always a cop car parked on Drexmore right where it merges with Chadbourne.

Multiple sources (LA Times, ABJ and FanHouse) are reporting that the Cavs are working on finalizing a deal for Brian Shaw to become the next head coach. Rumors were that, if Phil Jackson decided to step down as Lakers' coach, Shaw would have been his preference as a successor. I slightly favored Byron Scott getting the gig, due to his head coaching experience. But Shaw is well-liked by many players and Scott has had his issues with past players he has coached. Shaq, for one, gave an endorsement for the Cavs to interview Shaw. I have a feeling that Scott wanted the Izzo money that many were saying the Cavs offered (even though no formal deal was ever offered to Izzo and the 'paramaters' of the deal that was discuss was less than the 5yrs/30mill many reported). Gilbert probably felt about even between Shaw/Scott, but thought he could get Shaw at less $ Shaw is a former player who has worked under Phil Jackson for several years. His familiarity with the triangle offense (which the 1990's Bulls and present day Lakers use) may have been appealing to the Cavs. Downside is that he has no 'head' coaching experience.

^^I don't agree with your assumptions. The Cavs have won more regular season games over the past two years than any other team since the Bulls' dynasty in the 1990's. Coaching was a big issue in this year's playoffs and last year's (hence, the firing), as were injuries to several key players (Lebron, Shaq, and Andy V.). Plan A is to sign and trade for a big-time free agent, with Chris Bosh probably at the top of their wish list. With all this talk about other teams, the Cavs really might be the ONLY team that can offer two real max deals. They can give LBJ the max and they can have Toronto sign Bosh for the max they can sign him for and trade him to us. Bosh has sent enough signals to know that, wherever he goes, he would prefer it to be in a sign and trade to maximum his salary levels. Chicago, Miami and NYK don't have the assets to make that happen. Plan B is to make some tweaks to the current roster, sign a decent player to the MLE (like LAL did with Artest last summer) and give it a go again with a team that has won more than 120 games over the past two seasons. Funny how I don't hear about anyone saying Orlando needs to get blown up and their roster completely re-made. Plan C would be where Lebron leaves. THEN... its is time to rebuild. This team was built with him as the centerpiece. Take him away and it is a puzzle that can't be completed.

Brian Shaw is in town interviewing for the coaching vacancy at this moment. Cavs have already interviewed Byron Scott and Kelvin Sampson. All signs point to it being a two horse race between Shaw and Scott. Also, contrary to popular belief, Scott said in a media interview that he will not wait to see whether Phil Jackson retires (assuming he can get the Lakers' gig) or whether LBJ will re-sign before making a decision on a Cavs' offer... if he gets one. Me thinks that Gilbert is going to have to convince these guys that he did NOT offer Izzo 5yrs/30mill as was widely reported. Although Scott may be worth that much at market value.
  5. That show is so dull. I don't know why some people love it so much. Totally not funny.

Black glass and steel is how it has been described. We had a very similar image posted about a year or so ago before the forumer who posted it removed the image.

The shift in Vegas is a reflection of too many people betting on Chicago. It has nothing to do with the past 48 hours and everything to do with the trade Chicago agreed to last Thursday and the "reporting" that followed that trade. The Bulls traded one of their starters and their 1st round draft pick to Washington for essentially nothing. A move to clear more salary cap space to spend in free agency. The reports were that this created enough room for Chicago to sign two maximum contract free agents. It was widely reported as such by practically every major media outlet and the NYT called Lebron to Chicago a "done deal." However, that assumption was incorrect. Chicago now has close to, but not quite, $30 million in cap space. Maximum contracts for players that are not on your team start at $16.5 million. If the player is on your team already, you can offer him over $17 mill to start and larger increases each year. I am not that great at math, but I do know that 16.5 + 16.5 = 33..... not 29 and some change. Short of essentially giving away Luol Deng, Chicago will not be able to quite reach the 2 max free agent plateau that the Knicks tanked for so many years to reach. After the trade went down, the NY Times reported that a "League Executive" had told them on the thought that Lebron and Bosh were going to sign wtih Chicago - ".... it's a done deal". Of course, the Times neglected to put in the full quote - "I think it's a done deal" - and failed to mention what many suspect - that it was Chicago's executive who told them that. So, the whole betting line shift is the result of, essentially, some shoddy reporting by the national media. From a pure INDIVIDUAL talent standpoint, Chicago seems like a no-brainer as the best choice. However, the Bulls have a stingy/frugal owner and I am not sure they have the right pieces to put it all together, even with James and Bosh. Don't forget that we spent YEARS trying to assemble the best TEAM around Lebron. After years of experimenting, it was obvious that he plays the best with outside shooters that he can drive and kick to.... and big men who can clean the glass but not clog the lane. IMO, Chicago does not fit that profile... especially after they just traded away their best (and, arguably, only) outside shooter and only have one, I repeat ONE, big man on their roster who is not a 3 trying to play the 4/5.
  8. Thats Shaker Square. Where I live. Agreed on the second paragraph. Drexmore (eat of Van Aiken) and Chadbourne are considered part of Shaker Sq? Looking at a map, I guess that makes sense.

^That is the interview in the video I posted above. It is pretty funny actually. My favorite part is Jay-Z's response to how the new Nets' owner made his fortune. :) FWIW, in just the past week "sources"/"insiders"/"whatever a reporter wants to call them" has LBJ to Chicago as a "done deal" (NY Times).... no wait, it was "NYC all along" (F. Isola)..... errrrr, I mean LBJ to Miami is "locked up" (Steven A. Smith). Oh yeah, I forgot that if the Clippers ownership changes and Sterling no longer owns a majority stake, LBJ to LA is a "shoe-in"
  10. I believe there are some parts of Cleveland just southwest of Coventry/Shaker Blvd which are also in the Shaker School District. Right where Mayor Campbell lived. This is not uncommon in the area. There are small parts of Cleveland that are in the SE-Lyndhurst SD I believe. Parts of SE that are in the CH-UH SD. Parts of CH that are in the EC SD, and vice versa.

I have played in exactly one organized soccer match in my life and don't watch a whole lot of soccer, so take this analysis with that in mind. I watched the game today. ^Grit is good word for this US squad. Those boys have some heart and it showed throughout the entire run. However, watching some of the more elite teams in the world cup and watching the match today against this Ghana team, the disadvantage is obvious - their best athletes play soccer and ours don't. Not saying that Donavan, Dempsey, Howard, etc. are not good athletes, but they seemed slower, smaller and not as strong as Ghana on a whole. They had them beat in the heart department, but that was about it.

Two articles posted below that could, I suppose, also go in the "I Love Cleveland" thread. Mo Williams says that Cleveland has become his home and he does not want to leave. With trade rumors swirling around him over the last several weeks, the Cavaliers guard got proactive today via his Twitter feed by requesting not to be traded to his more than 54,000 followers. "I'm not ready to go," Williams wrote. "I'm begging. My work ain't done yet. I'm on both knees." * * * * * "I have my heart in the city and the organization and I don't want to leave," Williams said. "You can look at it from both sides. Other teams want you, so that is good, but I love Cleveland." http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index....view_with.html Most people around the league are viewing Shaquille O’Neal’s time with the Cavaliers as a one-year-and-out proposition. * * * * * There have been rumors this summer that New Jersey and Dallas have interest in signing him in free agency. Those rumors were news to O’Neal’s agent, Perry Rogers. “I know nothing about that,” he said. “Rumors are always floating around at this time of year. I haven’t talked to anybody yet.” If it was up to O’Neal, however, he’d come back for another year with the Cavs. “We’re hoping that’s the case,” Rogers said. “We love it there. It’s a great team. Cleveland is great. It was a great season. Everyone wanted it to end a little better. Let’s be clear: They were the top seed for a reason.” * * * * * The agent said he’s represented O’Neal since 2001 and he’s always played in warm-weather cities (Orlando, Los Angeles, Miami and Phoenix). “It was always, ‘Warm, warm, warm,’ “ Rogers said. “Shaquille is the one who suggested Cleveland. That surprised me. I thought, ‘Get to the winter and we’ll see.’ He loved it.” http://morningjournal.com/articles/2...5562656603.txt

  14. Thanks for the pics. Mr. Mayor, I do believe you captured oldmanladyluck in that second shot (based on his description from the previous page) :)
  15. I have always held out hope for that part of Collinwood north of the highway. It is somewhat incubated with the rail depot and the highway immediately to the south and Bratenahl immediately to the west. The new elementary school on 152nd is maybe the nicest school building in all of Cleveland. There is also a large park just east of 156th and just south of Lakeshore. The Grovewood is also a great asset. On of my best friends recently lived on Lucknow before moving over to 170th, just off Waterloo. Lucknow looked very rough but the neighbors were all cool. 170th was much nicer IMO. Although Lucknow and the street between it and Waterloo are both pretty beat up, there are some much more attractive streets to the north of there, between 152nd and 156th, before getting to Lakeshore.
  16. My brother-in-law works for one of the tenants committed to the new office building. He says the developers were sharing more detailed plans for interior spaces just last week.

    Sorry Minerva.... inside joke ;)
  18. And I'll leave you with this. Your arguments are almost always based on incorrect assumptions. I don't live in Cleveland Heights.
  19. I know that your perception of the City and reality are really far off. FWIW, I would say that Coventry's popularity and activity are at an all-time high. It wasn't too long ago that Coventry wasn't much more than a hang-out spot for teenage kids with green mohawks and empty wallets. It's transition over the past 10 years has maintained all of its best qualities, but increased foot traffic significantly.
  20. So the fight between 4 young teenage girls at a school at one end of the strip and the yelling, bumping, and "close to being out of hand" situation that escalated between the young men/boys from CH, Cleveland, and East Cleveland could have been an organized effort by a gang to spread mayhem in the Coventry neighborhood? And these "gangs" are doing this to intimidate local proprietors and, then, extort payments for protection? Dear God man.... somebody needs to warn Sunshine! ...Or maybe you are giving a little too much credit to some kids who got way out of hand on a hot day? Without knowing the exact story, let me throw out "scenario B" and you tell me which is more likely. A group of Cleveland and/or East Cleveland kids decided to go to the Fair. Maybe they parked on Coventry or one of those side streets north of Mayfield. Or maybe they just walked up the Superior Hill. As they were leaving, a group of Heights kids, who either live in that Mayfield/Superior/Coventry triangle or elsewhere in CH, crossed paths with them around Mayfield. Maybe they played football or b-ball against each other in the LEL. Maybe one of them screwed the others' girlfriend. Who knows. Words/looks/whatever were exchanged. Someone got offended or felt the need to run his mouth. The CH kids got on their phones and started making calls and "back-up" came pouring out of the triangle neighborhood. A melee was about to break loose and maybe some punches/objects were in fact thrown. If I was a betting man, I would assume that someone in that group had a weapon of some sort (similar to Clevelander17's constantly noted weapon). Pedestrians, residents and businesses all called the police. Police rushed to the scene and made arrests with a good amount of the suspects probably fleeing like roaches when the lights come on. As noted, no injuries. Charges issued for inciting a riot, which carries a heavy penalty. The fight at the school was probably about a Barbie. But, who knows, I suppose I can concede that it COULD have been part of the grander conspiracy you propose.
  21. ... ahem... :speech: I do believe that only the Administrators have the power of suspension, although I am sure they listen to the moderators' recommendation. Mayday, CDM and Rich are hardly anonymous and they certainly allow for more than enough individual discretion in posting (after all, I have never been suspended ). No need to accuse them of bias. I swear... it's always the conspiracy theorists on here who want to claim bias. I would bet MTS has been suspended more than you and you never hear him using such tacts... even though I suspect they don't like MTS because he is gay
  22. Sure, the fight at the intersection where the Coventry neighborhood and "the Jets" collide concerns me. That triangle neighborhood has always concerned me and I tell people to look elsewhere when searching for rentals. But this incident in particular concerns me no more or no less as when I hear about some drunken bafoon college kids starting fights on W. 6th (on any given night) or at the St. Patty Day Parade. There was a large fight at the Applebee's on Mayfield Rd in Lyndhurst the other week when my wife was there. There was also a near riot outside Bar Louie in Legacy Village just last month. In the Coventry/Mayfield Rd. incident, it's not like these youths were running up and down the Fair attacking random, innocent people, and contrary to what Clevelander17 might accuse our men in blue of, it seems the police response was swift and adequate to prevent anything worse. And, no, the 4 girls fighting at the school does not concern me at all. Not in the least bit. I don't get intimidated by that sort of thing. To each his own. And I am not sure where you get the idea that either incident was witnessed by hundreds of families. You do realize that the school is on the other side of Euclid Hts Blvd and was not part of the fair? The other fight also was at the extrem end of the strip, if not off it, and happened later at night when most families would be getting their kids to sleep I would hope. The Fair did not extend accross Mayfield Rd.
  23. I heard about that. 4 juvenille girls got into a fight at the elementary school on Euclid Hts Blvd and Coventry. All the girls were arrested. I will make sure to never go back there!!! I don't want to get beaten up by some 14 year old girls. Then, there was a larger fight among some males (mixture of youths and young adults) at the intersection of Mayfield and Coventry. Police put down their radar guns to respond to that incident as well. 5 people were arrested. No injuries were reported. Here, let me 'document' those facts for you - http://blog.cleveland.com/sunpress/2010/06/total_arrests_now_at_9_from_fi.html Look, I am not trying to start an argument. But we all know in a heavily populated area like Coventry which has an abundance of 'watering holes', there are going to be fights. Name me a similar area anywhere where you would not find these types of incidents, especially when large crowds gather. Kids are going to fight. I got into my fair share of fights growing up - including a huge riot at Shaker Hts HS that I could not be more ashamed of. As a citizen, I am much more concerned about random violence, such as muggings, car-jackings, etc. and I would challenge anyone to provide 'well-documented' proof of such incidents on Coventry. And I don't mean one incident. I mean 'well-documented'.... which would, ummmm, mean there are some documents you can share with us. Google is a lovely tool.

That's good to know. She said that there once was a grocery store withing walking distance from her house but it closed. You describe her neighborhood well. I don't think it's my kind of place actually. But I did like the three you mentioned. We went through them briefly but I could see they had more to offer. There did used to be a smaller grocery store on Noble just north of Monticello. It was nothing to write home about though and was likely put out of business by the modern day super markets. And while I always endorse Coventry as one of the more unique and walkable neighborhoods in the area, keep in mind that the grocery in that neighborhood is a Marc's discount store. Now, my wife shops at Marc's every week for cereal, juice, chips... the basics, if you know what I mean. The prices are outstanding. However, she goes to Trader Joe's, the West Side Market, or some other 'non-discount' store for meat and produce. I am not sure how the Dave's Supermarket in Cedar-Fairmount stacks up. The Zagara's on Lee Rd. is probably pretty good for all your needs though. There is a 24 hour CVS pharmacy right on the corner of Cedar-Lee if that makes a difference for you. Also, keep in mind that there is a Whole Foods within a few miles of all these neighborhoods (in University Heights - Cedar Rd and Warrensville Center Rd to be exact). Another mile east and there is a Heinen's. Not quite as expensive as Whole Foods, but still has a good selection of 'fresh' groceries. As far as Cleveland Heights on a whole, I would describe it as one of the most diverse cities you will find anywhere - racially, economically, religiously, etc. The racial diversity is evident just by driving around. Not much of a latino population, but I have noticed a recent growth in the south asian population (especially Indian) in the north part of town, right around where your friend lives. Then, you have the filthy rich (and I do mean 'filthy') all the way down to people on public assistance. You have large sects of Jews and Orthodox Jews, as well as Christians, Muslims and I'm sure many atheists and agnostics. It is a VERY socially liberal area. It was the first city in Ohio, and I think one of the first in the country, to have a gay partner registry. It can be a tad on the eccentric side with really 'loud' paint on some houses and artsy displays in the front yards. It has virtually zero industry, so taxes on the residents tend to be higher but, at the same time, it doesn't have those ugly zones some of its neighbors do. It has a great recreation center with ice skating and any form of exercise and/or activity you could imagine. Crime does happen of course, as it does in any urban area, but I would say that random violence is relatively low. Most crime I hear about consists of drug activity, domestic disputes, property crimes and fights among youths. Most crimes I actually witness (and I am ALL OVER that city on my bike 3-4 times per week) is drug trafficking. I also see some fights (usually alchohol related and occuring around closing time for the bars). It sounds like you have some good street-smarts and experience living in similar neighborhoods (love the point about Evanston!) so you should be fine. Rest assured that police presence is HEAVY. CH has one of the highest police per population ratios in the State, if not the country. Good luck with your search. If you do decide on Cleveland and you get to a point where you have narrowed your choices, come back and we can provide more specifics.
  25. Good find! Speaks volumes.
