Pet Peeves!
I have never had anybody confuse Cleveland with any other Ohio city, but I do remember hearing this exact response more than once - Q: Where are you from? A: Cleveland. Q: Oh.... Ohio?

Happy Father's Day
A belated thank you MTS. My son's birthday is on the 18th (he was born on Father's Day), so I often get overshadowed this time of year. My thing with that holiday though is that it should be called "Dad's Day".... when my son was born, my wife got me an pillow which has the following statement stitched on: "anybody can be a Father, but it takes a real man to be a Dad". So true... Speaking of Dads, I heard this on the radio last week and it brought me back. Still f'in hilarious... I don't care how many times you hear it - Chocolate Cake for Breakfast

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
Where exactly on the street is this? The article says Euclid and 4th but that can't be correct with the dead people's show and corner alley occupying those two spaces. Other side of Euclid? Anyways, I actually don't care much for their soup, but the wraps are pretty good and are generally neat (meaning you might be able to eat one without having to use 10 napkins)

A Different Relocation Question
Hi minerva: Lakewood is actually on the west side of town, so I am not sure that was the area your friend took you through. Anyways, the area your friend lives in is not exactly the most walkable part of CH. In fact, it might be one of the least walkable parts of the city. Very large residential neighborhood with really nothing but single family homes... maybe a couple duplexes. Not a bad neighborhood, but probably not what you are looking for. The other areas mentioned above (Coventry, Cedar-Lee, and Cedar-Fairmount are much more walkable and much more renter friendly.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
^That is a new Y! Local feature (or whatever it is called). It is just picking up on your geographic location and placing local stories on your front page. Personally, although I did not fully comprehend the plans, I did not care much for the idea of changing Public Hall into "high-tech meeting rooms".... it is what it is and should stay that way forever. When (if ever) it has outlived its use, it should remain as a monument conceived as a tribute to the ideals of Cleveland, builded by her citizens and dedicated to social progress, industrial acheivements and civic interest. Not every historical structure needs to be torn down or fitted for 'adaptive re-use.'

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
If it was organized, in part, by WKYC, I'm sure there will be a video. BTW, keep an eye on what the Hornets do with Darren Collison. He may be available if Gilbert is willing to take on Okafor and his cap-killing contract.

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
Looks like Rhodes. Congrats Mayday! Humble suggestion here, but maybe you could find a nice day this summer and get them the same shot without the scaffolding covering up the TT. For a modest price of course ;)

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
My biggest pet peeve...no accountability on the criminals. It's always someone else's fault...the people who left, the jobs that left...never the person who commits the crime. Never the person who doesn't maintain their property. Never the person who doesn't watch after the kids. Never the person who doesn't educate themselves beyond "low skilled manufacturing job". Change starts within. Couldn't agree more! ... with the highlighted statement, yes (which is why I assume you highlighted it). But the rest of the post is a GROSS exaggeration. "no accountability"? none? really? Why do we have prisons, probation departments, ankle bracelots.... ummmm.... electric chairs? Try going into court and telling the sentencing judge that "I committed the crime because I lost my job"... or "my daddy left"... or "my wife beats me" and see if the "woe is me" argument leads to zero accountability for your criminal actions.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
According to some sources, Izzo izn't going to leave East Lansing. I'm happy for MSU fans and Cavs fans (because I think former NBA players generally make the best coaches)... sad for Dan Gilbert though.

I didn't ask him for statistical proof. I only asked him for what is "well-documented"... his words, not mine.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Please share these "well-documented" problems. I am sure the mods will not suspend you if you back up your allegations with actual proof and not just your own skewed perception. Sure, there was a cop (who probably should not have been medically cleared for duty in the first place) who died while chasing after some low-life who spit on a security guard at Marc's. I don't remember anyone being shot on Coventry or stabbed. I don't recall any gun play like we saw in your precious Beachwood this past weekend. So, go ahead, let's see those documents which back up what I suspect is nothing more than your assumption based on... what is the term you like to use.... oh yeah, "demographic changes"

I think it's a joke if someone feels they have to arm themselves to go to Tremont or Coventry. Sorry.... but I do. JMO.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I suspect, like everything else in The Summer of Lebron, the reporting/rumors on the "Izzo wants to call Lebron" thing is not all that accurate.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I'm very aware of the strong honors/advanced placement programs at Heights and the matriculation of some students to Ivy League (and Ivy League level) schools. Unfortunately the numbers of students who fit such profile are decreasing just about on a yearly basis. I think we're close to reaching a point where some will start questioning the idea of even offering such programs anymore, at least as broadly as the schools currently do. "Through the years" is an important disclaimer, because at one time, several decades ago, Heights was one of the best schools in the country. It started really going downhill in the 80s. I hesitate to talk about current status because, frankly, it is much different than when I was there. No, no, no... it's not the "demographics" that have changed. It is the fact that the entire structure of the school is different. I am not even sure how they run the AP program anymore, with the school split into four or five distinct sections, although I know they still offer AP courses.

^^She truly was. Changed my life for sure. One of the funny things I heard about her, is that getting a call from her was both a blessing and a curse in the Jewish community. She was so well respected that people viewed it as a badge of honor that she would reach out to them, but they knew that when she called they'd better be ready to cough up the $$$ for one of her projects. For instance, when I was there, she raised enough money from the community to take a group of students on an all-expense paid trip to Europe for a tour of holocaust sites.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
^It's not a surprise because CH never pushed the students to take the AP tests. However, you would be surprised if you were aware of the level of AP programs CH has offered throughout the years and the fabulous teachers (Dr. Rabinsky) who instructed those courses. Not sure of what it is like since the restructuring, but when I attended we had plenty of kids going through the AP programs and on to Ivy League (and other top academic) universities.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
You can't necessarily shoot someone (or cut his throat) because he approaches your car and is bigger than you. You can't shoot him even if he approaches your car and punches you in the face. 'Proportional force' is the key term, I believe, under a self-defense analysis.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
I don't understand why there has not been more talk of Kansas being of interest to the Big 10. KU would be a welcome addition to the basketball season and is no slouch in football... though would probably be towards the bottom of the conference in that sport (along with Minnesota, Northwestern and Indiana). Geographically, it is connected to the other B10 states and is not a "city-themed" school a la Pittsburgh, which would be unique to the B10.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
^^Criminals don't have to come from public housing or bad parts of town. My Dad's house in Charlotte (the Dilworth neighborhood) was robbed about 10 years ago and it turned out to be his neighbor's kid. The one who attended Charlotte Country Day school and found a liking for the nose candy his freshman year in college. Then think about the 'Uniontown thug' who shot the parking lot attendant downtown last month. I just think this whole gun-play wave is an epidemic of society in general, hardly limited to people of lower socio-economic status. We need much, much harsher penalties for those who improperly/illegally possess/use guns.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Standoff continues in Beachwood BEACHWOOD, Ohio -- Several SWAT teams from the eastern Cuyahoga County suburbs have surrounded a four-story office building in Beachwood as hostage negotiators try to bring peaceful ending to a standoff there, Mayor Merle Gorden said. * * * * * The standoff appears to have started within the last two hours on the first floor of the building, possibly at Alfredo's International Salon, Gorden said. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/06/standoff_in_beachwood.html

Cleveland: Keeping its entertainment districts safe & vibrant
^^ Public drunkeness, fighting and vomitting around an area saturated with bars and clubs frequented by '20 somethings'... that's a shocker. You certainly won't find any of that in the French Quarter, South Beach, etc.
