I thought I heard at one point that part of the inspiration for Star Wars was the Lord of the Rings books. I can see the parallels. Getting back to pet peeves, but on the same note, I really hate seeing old movies where the actors/actresses used more of a stage actor's technique in terms of over emphasizing body language and tone. Think Shirley Temple, James Stewart in It's a Wonderful Life, etc. It just comes accross as silly to me. Unless.... that is really the way people talked and acted back then, but I doubt it. I also hate seeing old flicks were the actresses have those deep, "dame" voices where it sounds like they have a stick up their you know what.
  2. From today's PD article posted above: Whitlow said the center is well-positioned to assume a significant role in the administration's plan. "We are an outstanding research center," Whitlow said. "I see Glenn's future as solid."
  3. Ummmm.... Euclid Sq. Maill is not close at all to the Euclid Creek reservation. And yes, people drive through it, but to imply that it is not used as a park is nonsense. Drive through there on any decent day and you will see hikers, joggers, bikers, cookouts, family reunions, pickup basketball games, pickup baseball games... anything you find in most every public park. I ride through there all the time on my bike. And I will take my dog off path through there. Sadly, the negative perception might be the result of.... well... anyone care to take a guess? Since I am there all the time, maybe I can clarify that I have never been mugged, raped, looked at funny or confronted in any way.... well, except for the time some old, grumpy W-H-I-T-E guy yelled at me for not giving him forewarning when passing him on the path. And all the same can be said about Forest Hills Park too. Undeserved negative perception.
  4. Did I accidentally log onto to Cleveland.com? What the hell is going on around here? In line with that tune though, I do have a complaint about L'albotros (sp?). I had some folks in from out of town. I called to make reservations for 8 on a Saturday and told them that we had a toddler in the crowd and asked if that would be OK. I haven't dined there since it changed ownership/name and I wasn't sure. They said it was fine and we made the reservation. A couple hours later, I got a call saying they were cancelling the reservation. About an hour after that, I got ANOTHER call to confirm that we were not going to show up. Now, I don't know the reason (whether it was the kid or if they simply overbooked), but that was very bad business IMO. Especiallly the "it's not just no... it's a HELL no" second call. Kind of insulting, especially since (and I realize these are different owners) we had a party of 50 there a few years back for a rehearsal dinner.

Moved from the pet peeve thread Quote from: rockandroller on Today at 09:58:24 AM LOVE Young Frankenstein. A masterpiece. Am obsessed with LOTR. Loved Star Trek TOS and TNG, never saw any of the movies. Loved cheesy clash of the titans, am looking forward to see what they do with the remake. If you do choose to watch the movies, there is a pretty simple forumula to follow. For the most part, the even number movies are good and the odd number movies are awful1 (The Motion Picture) - terrible 2 (The Wrath of Kahn) - above average IMO 3 (The Search for Spock) - meh 4 (The Voyage Home) - great.... "can you tell me vhere to find the nucwear whessels?" 5 (The Final Frontier) - the worst 6 (The Undiscovered Country) - the best IMO... great parallels with the Cold War 7 (Generations) - might be the worst (definitely Shatner at his worst and that is saying something) 8 (First Contact) - pretty good 9 (Insurrection) - not very good 10 (Nemesis) and 11 (Star Trek) - the two exceptions to the rule IMO.... maybe they are going to flip-flop for 10 through 20 and make the odd numbers actually watchable.
  6. ^I agree. Sunset Grille would be that much more popular if it wasn't so isolated. I would venture to guess that most clevelanders who are not part of the boating community don't even know it exists and/or don't know how the hell to get there.

My response moved to the Off Topic thread to avoid the b!tch's wrath
  8. Honestly, if we are going to have a mental hospital on Euclid... I don't care that much that it won't have interaction with the street. My first option, of course, would be to put it somewhere else.
  9. I thought the entire complex was referred to as "Public Hall", the main room being "Public Auditorium" with smaller venues in "Music Hall" and "the Little Theatre" I also thought the RRHOF concert was held in Music Hall. The Obama event (during the primaries) was definitely held in the Auditorium... or whatever it is formerly known as.
  10. Personally, I prefer Cleveland University to University of Cleveland. We already have a "UC" in Ohio. Just drop the "State" - there is a stigma that latches onto to any "city name" "state" university.
  11. I heard on the radio this morning that the CC/MM plan was getting federal stimulus money. Could have been a reporting mix-up with the Federal Bldg story. Anyone know if this is true and how much might be added to the $425 mill currently budgeted for the project?
  12. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtain_wall Sounds like what was done with the parking garage on Euclid Ave. I imagine it will be all glass. That will be nice. We don't really have that look in our skyline. I have imagine that there willl be substantial other renovations for $121 mill.
  13. A MONUMENT CONCEIVED AS A TRIBUTE TO THE IDEALS OF CLEVELAND BUILDED BY HER CITIZENS AND DEDICATED TO SOCIAL PROGRESS INDUSTRIAL ACHIEVEMENT AND CIVIC INTEREST PATRIOTISM PROGRESS CULTURE Personally, I never cared much for a re-purposing of our "monument" even if it is seldom used now.
  14. Are any other states skipping a step in the process? Meaning, are there any other states that are going straight from 79mph to 150mph or have planned to make the jump from 110mph to 220mph?

When a non-southernor pronounces the word measure as "MAY-sure" or someone who is not from GB prounounces schedule as "shedule"
  16. Seems like the winning design would eliminate the parking behind City Hall and the old County Courthouse.... unless that parking is buried in there somehow. I wouldn't like that angle because it would make the surface lots in the WHD that much more valuable just at the status quo.
  17. I would be very weary of owning a house with wood siding here in Cleveland, not that I don't like the look. But you have to paint it every 5 or so years to keep it looking nice due to weather conditions.
  18. I just think Greenhouse Tavern is a little too eclectic for my taste, but I think it adds that uniqueness to the dining experience downtown so I am glad it is there. I liked the rosemary touch on the fries and the burger was not bad. The rest of the stuff I tried I did not care for. I really did not like that soda and green tea mixture they serve there.
  19. The cost of brick is suprisingly high when you price it out. That said, if I ever built my own home, it would be out of brick or stone regardless of the substantial increase in cost.
  20. As long as you restrict your search to Cleveland Hts, South Euclid, Lyndhurst and beyond... you will be in a "reasonably safe area". You will be fine going to your car at 2 a.m. and you will be fine jogging around the neighborhood. My wife rides her bike around our neighborhood all the time without incident, harassment or anything like that.... well, maybe the occasional old pervert. Overall, it is a good family area with good values and a very neighborly atmosphere regardless of skin colorm religion, whatever. That is why my parents picked it 30 some years ago, why my mom still lives here, and why I ultimately ended up back here to raise a family of my own. But it is your home, so I would do your own research. Just keep in my what the source of the information is or you may end up spending $50,000-$100,000 more on the same house based upon unfounded and prejudicial concerns. Bottom line though is you have to find something that you are comfortable and happy with. Good luck. You can PM me if you want some advice on any particular addresses or have other questions/concerns about the neighborhood.

The problem with Charlotte is, as mentioned above, their pop has loyalties to other teams. You have the locals who root for the Braves and you have the transplants who hold on to their hometown clubs. With the Panthers and Bobcats/Hornets, Charlotte fans have proven to be front-runners and luke-warm fans at best. When things went well for the Hornets with Zo, LJ and Mugsy, they had an impressive string of sellouts. Then, the team had to rebuild and the fans dissappeared, forcing the move to NO. The Panthers were smart to identify their team as "Carolina", not "Charlotte" or "North Carolina". It really expands their fanbase but you still have to deal with fans that just aren't used to professional sports. In some ways, I think a pro baseball team would be better off in Raleigh than Charlotte.
  22. I don't know what the stats are but don't let others confuse you on the difference between increasing crime and increasing diversity. It was not long ago that South Euclid and Lyndhurst were mostly white. Lyndhurst has become somewhat diverse, South Euclid much more so. Some long-time residents automatically equate that with increased crime. I live near the South Euclid / CH border and never lock my car and no one on my block has EVER had a break in. Check out the neighborhood I directed you to. It is about half Lyndhurst and half S Euclid. Let me know if you can tell when you cross the border into South Euclid (Professor Rd). My point is the neighborhoods are nearly identical. There are certain parts of South Euclid that might not be your cup of tea, but those would be more towards the Cleveland border going north on Green or Belvoir. So just stay south of Monticello and you have nothing to worry about. In terms of city services, I mean that Lyndhurst plows the sidewalks on major street, tends to get to road repairs faster and other little stuff like supplies you with a trash can. With respect to heating a bigger place, it all depends on the efficiency of the house. A radiator heated home with poor insulation and windows can cost a fortune to heat. On the other hand, a bigger but more modern home would not be nearly as much if it is insulated well. Ask to see the utility bills over the past few years and judge for yourself... of course, asking the previous owner what his/her heating habits were (some like it hot while others freeze their arses off to pinch a penny). The other thing about the neighborhood I pointed you to is the creeks that join up to make the Euclid Creek. Make sure you get a full and accurate disclosure on water damage because flooding can be hit or miss. Speaking of creeks, have you checked out Cutter's Creek development on Green and Anderson? Not really my style but they are brand new homes and right on the tip of the metroparks.
  23. I know nothing about this woman, but I don't see how her individual stances on abortion and the 2nd Amendment significantly impacts her qualifications as Secretary of State.
  24. agent99, As you can tell by my handle (or whatever you call it) I live nearby to that area, a little closer to the City though. From Hawken, it is about 20 minutes to downtown without traffic. You would just take Richmond to Highland and Highland to 185. 185 has an entrance on to the shoreway. The more scenic route, through UC and Midtown is more like 25 minutes. It would be about 35 mins to the airport, and you would probably go 271 to 480 to get there. If you are looking at Lyndhurst, you might consider crossing the border into South Euclid. You will get more bang for the buck and pay less taxes, but be in the same school district. City services are better in Lyndhurst though. You get what you pay for. Take a look at the neighborhood boxed in by Richmond on the east, Belvoir on the west, Mayfield on the south and Monticello on the north. You can get 3-4 bdrm, 2-2 1/2 bath homes for under $200,000 and under $5000 in yearly property taxes. At a decent interest rate and, not including any PMI, that would be about $1000 in mortgage payments with the insurance prorated in. My point is the houses in South Euclid are about 75% the cost of the Lyndhurst homes and just as nice neighborhoods IMO. There is also a swath of Euclid that is south of Euclid Ave. on the east end of town that is suprisingly charming. You could get about the same house by 1/2 the property taxes. However, I hear that Euclid makes up for some of that tax loss by having a higher income tax, so check that out too.
