  1. One of my favorite recent renovation projects in the Cleveland area lulu. Welcome and good luck.
  2. If that is the old board of education building, I have a friend that lives there. It is a really nive conversion and an interesting crowd of artists, carpenters, young professionals, etc. It is gated in and is not in a neighborhood you would really want to explore. Probably popular due to quick access to 490. But also very close to the projects and some real seedy parts of town. Doesn't seem to be a good fit for you.
  3. Like I said upthread, in that little swath of CH, stay either on Mayfield Rd or south of it.

He's going to resign. I feel confident in that and am going to renew myself. If I had to guess, it will be another 3 yr contract with a player option for a 4th yr. He will be 28 when it expires and still have all the options he could want.
  5. Welcome! As far as Cleveland Heights goes, stay south of Mayfield Rd. I take offense to that ;) The 44121 is not unsafe! Seriously though, the "south of mayfield" rule, in my mind, really only applies in the very small portion of CH known by locals as "the Jets" which would be anything south of Mayfield and west of Superior. But, it should not include "on" mayfield road even if that means the south side of the street. There are other little pockets of Heights that you may want to stay away from, but they are few and far between. The only one I could specifically identify for you would be going too far past Monticello on Noble and approaching the East Cleveland border, but you would realize that just by driving through. Also, if school districts are important to you, be careful as some areas of Cleveland Heights are in the East Cleveland school district and you don't want to buy there. Based on your post, I would say look at the Coventry and Cedar-Fairmount neighborhoods in Cleveland Heights. On the east side of the City, I would generally limit your search to specific neighborhoods like Downtown, University Circle, Little Italy, Asiatown, Shaker Square, and North Collinwood. It all depends on what you consider "safe". Personally, I would walk around any of those areas without much fear. Someone else will provide better advice for west side neighborhoods. Welcome to Cleveland.
  6. Smartest career move I have ever seen someone make was Sharon's "show all" piece :)

The Cavs have not lost by more than 3 points in over a month and went 15-3 during that streak They have not lost by more than 10 points since 11/18 and that was the only time they lost by more than 10 points all season They are also 26-1 on the season when scoring 100 or more points Good job Danny

Screw a "resort". Go on a cruise ship if you want that type atmosphere. Although it is not in the "caribbean" I would take a look at Hamilton in Bermuda. You can find everything you would find at a resort and still be in a safe area. The whole island is nothing but about 10 miles wide. Great beaches. Great activities - golf, jetskis, horseback riding, etc. Good food selection too. The downer is that it is expensive so make sure it fits within your budget. Sorry for the non-responsive post ;)

It's not an official nickname but I have heard it before. I think it is a thing in the local print media - free times, scene, etc. Not sure of the origin... if there is one. The article itself is not that bad in terms of putting Cleveland in a negative light... save for that one line. I thought it was actually somewhat complimentary to our fans and general attitude and a slight at Miami/NYC/etc fair weather fans who have a sense of entitlement when it comes to Lebron.

Why is this the case? Also, are there are other cases of this where parts of the city are not served by CMSD, rather by a suburban district? I don't want to steal MTS's thunder, but I believe that a deal was struck to prevent that neighborhood from breaking off from Cleveland and being annexed into Shaker Hts. The deal was that the Shaker Sqaure neighborhood would remain in Cleveland, but fall within the Shaker Heights School District. School districting maps not mirroring municipal boundaries is not that uncommon... in NEO at least. For example, parts of East Cleveland fall within the Cleveland Hts school district and parts of Cleveland Hts (Forrest Hills) fall withing the East Cleveland school district.

^ Thanks for posting that. "the Paris of the Rust Belt" - Haven't heard that one in a while! "Impoverished, corrupt, hemorrhaging population, and cursed with six months of gray winter" - booooo! "Ashtabula -- a tiny coal town an hour north of Cleveland" - I think that might be the first time I have heard of any town being described as "north" of Cleveland.

Does anybody else get dizzy when walking up/down an escalator that is not moving?

IIRC, the issue I had with the ruling is that it nullified well-reasoned "regulations" on firearms. It did not ban them in your own home, like DC tried to do. It did not ban them in your car (so I don't get the travel argument). IIRC, the issue involved a Cleveland law which banned guns in public parks. My viewpoint is that guns should not be in public parks and if you feel the need to bring one, you probably shouldn't be in that park in the first place.

Drivers who refuse to wait in exit lines, bypassing the other social rule abiding citizens and cutting into the exit lane at the last minute. This also applies to all you a-holes who stay in the Route 2 lanes approaching downtown CLE from the east and then cut into the dead man's curve lanes when they split with Route 2. FYI pricks... by doing that, it causes the 200 cars in front of me to engage in a chain reaction of brake application which slows the whole process down. Same effect occurs when you constantly try to get in the "moving" lane in stop and go traffic.

I don't want to take this too far off-topic, but your home rule analysis is a little off. You are not apply the "Canton test" correctly. Under a proper analysis, the local law is examined to determine if it is one of local self government or local police power. If the law is one of local self government, the analysis stops and the local law prevails over conflicting state law. If the local law is an exercise of the police power, then you conduct the "general law" test and bring in the statewide concern compenent. Self rule is autonomous. Police power is concurrent. You were close though. And you are right that the Ohio Supreme Court has probably weakened home rule beyond its intended limits. I certainly disagreed with the gun possession ruling. I think cities should be able to regulate the possession of guns in their parks, schools, etc.

That is not true... in Ohio at least. The Home Rule Amendment to the constitution grants local, chartered governments autonomy in the realm of local self government, such as qualifications of elected officials, number of members of council, legislative procedures, etc. State laws are trumped by local charters on ALL issues of self government. What constitutes local self government is the topic of litigation quite frequently. On point here, we saw a case in Ohio just a year or two ago over whether the regulation of guns was a matter of local self-government. The Ohio Supreme Court held that it was not, but many municipal law experts strongly disagreed with that ruling just as they disagreed with the ruling which held that residency requirements were not an issue of local self-government.

I see two big undecided issues with the Second Amendment that need to be addressed: 1) Can the government restrict the types of "arms" the individual may "bear"? 2) Does the Second Amendment apply to the States? In other words - does the Second Amendment limit the State (not Federal) Governments' ability to regulate "arms" within its boundaries? The latter question is probably going to be addressed by the Supreme Court within the year and, in the process, may dispose of the first question. The pro-gun crowd will argue that the Second Amendment is incorporated through the 14th Amendment and applies to the States. It might be the first time in the history of the judicial process that conservatives are actually arguing FOR 14th Amendment incorporation. The States will, of course, argue that they have sovereign powers within their borders and may "regulate" arms as they see fit. Liberals will back this argument and it may be the first time in the history of the judicial process that group would actually argue AGAINT 14th Amendment incorporation. Just goes to show you that nobody really stands by their self-proclaimed constitutional principals if such a stance does not fit within their party platform on any given issue.
  18. Welcome Cleverland! Your handle is... well... very clever! Thanks for posting that. I had never seen that image before either.
  19. Yeah... the science wing on the front of CHHS is ugly as sh!te and really hides the beautiful courtyard in front of the old main entrance. While the space was necessary, I really wish they would have thought of a better way to do it. If for no other reason, you'd think they would have wanted to maintain the "H" shape of the school.
  20. I'd hate to be the guy that had to mow that thing. Very neat concept though. Practically speaking I like the Russel Colin design. I think that one is actually do-able. The Caceres and Canonico design seems to take away quite a bit of parking behind City Hall and the Old County Courthouse. I like the innovation and all but, practically speaking, I would just prefer the old idea of building a Mall D which would act as a roof to the station and extend pedestrian access to the lakefront without having to worry about getting clipped crossing Route 2.

I'd rather have Cleveland's 30 degrees with windchill than DC's 95 degrees with high humidity.

I haven't seen attendance numbers lately, but that does not make much sense to me. LA has already lost 2 teams due to lackluster support in such a mega market. SA is a smaller media market than the twin cities and the MSA is about 1/2 the size. Not to mention that probably 1/2 of SA's pop. are die-hard Cowboys fans. I could see Jax going to either of those cities, but not Minny. Plus, it would be such a shame to break up the rivalries in the NFC North with Chicago, Minny, and GB all playing each other twice a year.

It always seemed weird that Cleveland, of all places given the weather, does not have an NHL team. I suppose the reasoning might be that we could not support both an NBA and NHL team (like Pittsburgh and Buffalo only have one)... and I would MUCH rather have an NBA team. But I think it could work if they played their games more in the middle of the MSA... like the Cavs used to. Was Richfield Coliseum demo'ed?

It will certainly reduce his production, but in Delonte's case, the best thing for him is to continue playing and being around his teammates. I would have hated to see him out of action for any extended period of time. About last night's game, there was A LOT of purple and gold in the stands. And nothing gave me more pleasure than watching the Lakers' fan in full Lakers'/Kobe gear sitting in front of me storm off in a fit after the game was over. Poor guy probably waited a better part of a decade waiting to see Kobe and the Lakers play.

Sorry RR, I must have misread. I thought you were saying that the winter on the east side of town gets worse as you get closer to the lake. I never said that you said downtown was the "snowbelt" The east side of Cuyahoga County varies in terms of snowfall. At lake level (Cleveland, East Cleveland, Bratenahl, Euclid) you will get less snow than when you go up the hill to the inner ring (Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, South Euclid). Snow will noticeably increase as you leave the inner ring and head towards Mayfield. But the snowbelt does not begin, in my mind at least, until you are either as south as Bedford or Solon or heading east out of Cuyahoga County into the Chagrin River Valley. Once you get out to Chardon... well, you might as well live in Syracuse.
