  1. You won't see the racism northerners tend to expect down south if you are just visiting the bigger cities. It is still there for sure... just not to the extent us northerners assume. Florida is a good example. Go anywhere on the coasts and you won't know you are in the south aside from the weather. But if you travel through swampland or the panhandle, you might be convinced the south will rise again!... and you might even hear that phrase used or stuck to the back of a 1979 ford pickup.

This is a battle between the unions and the administration, not the unions and the citizens. There are plenty of citizens who would favor the unions' stance and there are plenty that will side with the administration. But it is not like cutting the safety forces is the only way to balance the budget. The police and fire personnel already make less than similarly situated employees in comparable cities. Yet, the administration has told them to accept a pay cut or face significant layoffs. Has Frank Jackson announced his pay cut yet? How about Martin Flask? Sweeney? I don't know personally... just asking. This is a mess and there is no easy solution.
  3. I thought we had a safety force thread, but couldn't find it. Anyway, discuss... because this issue is about to get a whole lot nastier and the legal wrangling is well underway. The unions are not going to agree to the proposed paycuts or the furlough days. Police, Fire and EMS are all going to face layoffs if the City has its way. Where is the TARP money for the police? I thought part of the stimulus plan was supposed to prevent police layoffs in cities like Cleveland.
  4. And I believe the planned route will indeed add "a couple of minutes" to the drive time. I doubt a 79 mph train with 5 or more stops could get to Cincy faster than I could in my car if I planned it to miss rush hour through C-bus. Those couple of minutes would be well worth it. But going through Akron and Canton would add AT LEAST an hour, maybe two, IMO and that would be if everything went smoothly with no delays. Might still be worth it for you and me, but the 3-C has to attract Mr. I-am-indifferent-towards-rail-travel Guy and the added time, IMO, would discourage him from using the 3-C.
  5. Hollywood really needs to remake "White Man's Burden" - the movie that starred John Travolta and flipped society as we see it. It was such a great concept but so poorly executed.

The "Man in White" episode (not sure if that was the actual title) made me a Stewie fan for life.

I don't care much for the tactics either, but $1.4 million is a bit insulting to the heart and soul of our team. And I would say "tough luck" to him since he signed a contract, but the NFL works differently than other sports. JC is locked into that contract, but the Browns are not. They could cut him anytime before the June deadline and not pay him a dime. If he gets hurt this offseason, they can cut him. So I don't blame since the guaranteed nature of his contract is not a two way street.
  8. Well... on that block there is the County Admin building, the County annex building, the Sportsman, 113 St. Clair and the parking garage. Isn't the parking garage part of the 113 property or at least owned by the same company?
  9. You're missing my point MTS. I never said that racism towards blacks does not exist. I spent 7 years in NC and know all about it cupcake. All I meant to get accross was that is not the only form of racism that needs to end and that, at present, Blacks are just as racist towards whites, if not more.... and definitely much more overt in my experiences. And I would bet you that if a white guy was going around in public referring to blacks as "boy"... someone would say something to him.... at least it would be heavily frowned upon by most of the population. Whereas the reverse scenario would barely get a second glance because it is not percieved as being racist... just common terminology.
  10. That discussion also cannot begin until black folks stop referring to GROWN men as "white boys"... but that is a discussion probably more appropriate for the pet peeve thread. Isn't that how white folks refer to GROWN black men as "boy"? It's a two way street. Nobody that I know and if such a comment was made in public in this day and age, society would throw a fit. The other way down that street seems to be socially acceptable for whatever reason and that is what ticks me off. Regardless, you are making my point. It IS a two way street. That was all I was trying to say. I grew up as a minority in both school and even moreso in my neighborhood. Trust me when I say I have witnessed and, to some extent, experienced reverse racism at its worst. Ignoring it or justifying it on past experience is not the answer.
  11. Wouldn't it be annoying to have your ears "pop" everytime you took the elevator up to your apartment?

  13. I won't watch MLB until they put in some kind of hard salary cap. Otherwise, it is just the Yankees and a bunch of farm teams.

Sometimes when I am 'posseing' up and heading out to a nasty street brawl, I do a perfectedly formed, toes pointed handspring over my chain linked fence... all with a pack of cigarettes rolled up in my sleeve. .... too soon?
  15. Zoup = the only reason for me to go to Solon.
  16. I think that's the whole point. People aren't overtly racist anymore because that's just not considered OK these days. Instead, some people do things motivated by race but claim ulterior motives. In the example, if Christine was overtly racist, she would have claimed she moved to Utah "to get away from the [insert word of choice for AA's here]". Instead, she claims other reasons for the move. Now we won't know if she's racist or not, even if she truly is. Maybe she isn't, but surely others who are racist could make the same move and use the same reasons, and we wouldn't know which of them individually are racists and which are not. This is all part of the "euphimism game" mentioned by 327, for which I feel he is spot on. The overtly racist have diminshed in number, but the covertly racist have filled [some or much, depending on how cynical you are] of that void. Yup. Spot on.
  17. Parking garages also cost much, much more to operate and maintain than surface lots. But I don't think buying the lots is an issue, is it? I thought Weston/Gilbane/Whatever either owned that land or had an option to buy.

Has Joe C commented on this yet? He's got to be pissed unless there is some other rationale we are not aware of.
  19. My hopes would be for a Roly Poly or Atlanta Bread Company (is that chain still even in existence).
  20. ^In the 10 drafts prior to the 2005 when they selected Deron Williams, the Utah Jazz had selected 7 white b-ball players and scooped up every Matt Harpring and Jeff Hornacek on the FA market. Coincidence?
  21. The underdog. Nothing like a good upset.
  22. I thought it was funny. But I just read the cartoon.

Not any of the ones I have personally lived in, but I have been inside some. Whether they were converted that way or part of the original build, I do not know. Probably much more common in the higher priced homes. I grew up in a tudor with radiators and we definitely had some issues over the years. My sister just bought a beautiful home in CH on Monmouth and it has a boiler. Come to find out upon inspection that it was leaking carbon monoxide and that resulted in her almost walking away until the owners knocked the repair cost off of the sale price. Another issue with those older homes can be the roofs as well. My sister's home has a slate roof and it is in dire need of repair. Just repairing that roof cost more than I spent replacing my entire roof.
  24. Thad is leaving. Cam and Chekwa are staying for their senior seasons. Nate Williams should sufficiently replace Thad, plus there are some very talented pass rushers who have not found their way on the field yet - Melvin Fowler, Keith Wells and Solomon Thomas. Spitler leaving will result in an upgrade IMO. Ettiene Sabino has been groomed and is much more athletic. We will also get Tyler Moeller back next season, although it is possible that he will be moved to safety. There is also a kid who redshirted this past year, Dorian Bell I think is his name, from Pa. and he was VERY highly rated coming out of HS... something like the 11th best player overall in the country. Same goes for Cordle leaving. Hopefully Mike Adams' light will finally turn on. He can be 10x the LT that Cordle was this past season if he is motivated. Marcus Hall from Glenville will jump over him in the depth chart if he is not, but that will probably result in Shugarts moving to the left side and Hall taking over at RT. The guards and center will be back and will make up one of the best interior lines in recent Buckeye memory. To me, the most interesting position next year will be running back. We have quite a stable - Boom, Saine, Jordan Hall, Jamal Berry, Carlos Hyde and Roderick Smith. Smith will probably redshirt, but the other five, while maybe not heisman contenders, could start on a lot of Div 1 teams and their skill sets are rather diverse.

Ughhh.... I was at that game.
