I also agree that you should rent. The Cleveland area is so diverse (racially, economically, socially, etc.) that it probably would be best to familiarize yourself with the are before buying. On the other hand, it does seem like you have done your research. If you look at pre-war homes, I would try to find one with forced air so you don't have to worry about boilers and window units. JMO.
  2. I love everytime I hear about a new outdoor bar in downtown. The smoking ban is the gift that keeps on giving for C-town!
  3. And I would bet that a lot of those injuries occured because they were going half speed. I guess I just don't buy into the whole "we don't want to show them anything" method. That might have been their strategy, but I don't think it is effective in week 17 going into the playoffs. I wouldn't think that the Bengals have a fresh playbook they are going to unveil in the playoffs. They are going to dance with the girl that got them there and there is plenty of film for the Jets to review from the past 15 weeks. Resting your regular starters I can understand. Poking out your chin for a clean right cross I can not.
  4. Did they downsize the office building a couple floors? I seem to remember it being 20 or 21 (that Cleveland barrier) stories. I have tried to picture this building in the existing skyline for a while now and can't quite figure out if it will enhance or take away from our skyline. I suppose it will depend on what angle you are looking at downtown from. From Edgewater and the shoreway, I think it will enhance the skyline much like the CSU tower does from the east. But from the lake, I think it will look disjointed, like the CSU tower does from the south.
  5. Personally, I hate the Burj Dubai, or whatever they are calling it now. It looks like a giant drill bit and seriously diminishes the impressiveness of the otherwise impressive surrounding structures.
  6. The bottom line is that, to be successful, the 3-C train must be able to compete with the drive time from Cleveland to Columbus to Cincy. It doesn't have to be shorter, but it must be competitive. It's that simple IMHO.

Is Holmgren going to hire a GM? I thought he was going to be the GM, at least as it comes to player/personnel decisions. He might hire someone to head up the non-football operations part of the organization, but I doubt he is going to bring in another white collar to interact with whatever coach he decides to go with.
  8. Do we have any insight on what is going in with the building on Ontario immediately behind the Park Building? Looks like some interior renovation is occuring.
  9. I took a slight detour out of downtown this morning to take a good look at 668. Earlier posters are correct that the pictures, while greatly appreciated of course, don't do justice to the detail and craftsmanship the naked eye can see on the new/old facade. Even more than Reserve Square? I suppose RS may look bigger than it actually is. Is there any stats out there on # of units in the various downtown buildings for comparison's sake.

It will depend on whether him and Big Mike can come to an agreement on "schemes" Mangini is a ball control offense, 3-4 defense guy. Holmgrem is a west coast offense, 4-3 defense guy. You can't get much more conflicting than that. So.... the question is how far will Holmgrem's "final say" authority extend onto the actual playing field.

The high school in Shaker is clearly better than Cleveland Heights High... as much as it does pain me to say that (yes, I am still a bitter rival 15 years later). But don't underestimate the "excellence" of Heights High. Meaning, the arts, the AP programs and other qualities endure and can and do produce Ivy League students. And if your kids are young, the Roxboro School district in southern CH will hold its water with anywhere in Shaker K-8. Regarding the homes themselves, just make sure that your analysis focuses on the "bones" of the house, not cosmetic crap like paint, wallpaper, tile, window treatment, etc.
  12. It's hard to get back up after being punched in the mouth like that. Confidence is a huge factor in football and the Bengals gave the Jets loads of it. If it was part of some kind of plan, it was a really, really dumb idea. It is one thing to play conservative. It is another to bend over and get ramrodded. You better believe those Jets defenders are going to white up the knuckles and pin their ears back in the opening round thinking they are going to be able to intimidate the Bengals into curling up into the fetile position again. Not the way I would have wanted to end such a great season.

The score will vary depending on the exact address... but not much.

There is some website that grades the "walkability" of a neighborhood. Good tool to use when making a final decision. Just punch in the address and it will grade the "walkability" based on distance to grocery, other retail, etc.
  15. Do we really want to rename public square anyways? Think Progressive Field, Healthline, Parker Hannifin Hall, etc.

And I will venture a guess that MTS will not recommend "Shaker Heights".... but rather a certain neighborhood in Cleveland that happens to be in the SH school district. ;) Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with any area actually within Shaker Heights. There may be a few areas that fall within the school district that you may want to avoid, but anything within the municipal boundaries is fine. However, the areas north of Chagrin Blvd are preferrable IMHO if cost is not too much of an issue. Anywhere south of that you may have to worry about the neighborhoods which border those areas.

During this last 4 game run, the team looked more and more like the Browns I remember from my childhood. Hit you in your mouth defense and run down your throat offense. Here's hoping Mangini gets one more year.
  18. So... did they lay down last night because it was too cold and did not feel like being out there? Or did they lay down because it royally screwed the Steelers? Not a good way to end the season and head into the playoffs. Plus, there is not better way to get injured than to play football at half speed.
  19. Doesn't the HL "circle" the square. Does it even use Ontario or Superior. If Ontario and Superior must remain, what about narrowing both of them down to one lane in each direction? I don't think I have ever seen PS jammed up with traffic so that might be a realistic tweak that could afford more options. And just wondering, but how does PS compare size-wise with Fountain Square. Seems to me that FS is not that much bigger than any of the 4 individual quadrants of PS.

On the "chips" issue.... I do expect to see implants that can identify like we have for our pets. But I also expect that parents will elect to have those chips installed in their kids to track location. I really, REALLY do not understand the point of having a manual transmission without a clutch. It baffles me. The clutch action is the whole point of standard shifting, not the shifter. For that reason, I doubt manuals will go completely extinct. As a matter of fact, I think they have made a bit of a comeback as of late with this whole "Fast and the Furious" generation. Me, I will NEVER go back to automatic. NEVER. I owned one once and it really took all the joy out of driving for me. Well, my truck is automatic but I don't drive it enough to care and I still reach for the clutch whenever I get in it (kind of feels like expecting an extra step up a flight of stairs that is not there).
  21. These measures would all go a long way towards making the existing square better, that's for sure. But I disagree that it would be enough for the square to come anywhere near its potential as the city's signature space. I think a thoughtful redesign of the square would be one the best ways to encourage building up the areas surrounding it. I am not against "thoughtful redesign".... I just don't want to put the cart too far ahead of the horse.
  22. Seriously folks, the pedestrian traffic in and around PS is diverse. That's Cleveland. Yes there are panhandlers. And yes, there are "hoodlums" waiting for the bus. But it seems like that is all Joe and Mary Strongsville notice. I see plenty of suits in and around the square. I see skateboarders. I see clubbers and other partygoers going back and forth between the Caddy Ranch, E 4th and the WHD. I mean, really.... why do you think the panhandlers set up shop there... to beg for money from somebody purported "hoodlum" (which to Joe and Mary = black youth) getting on a bus? I am just not sure PS really needs a "major" redesign. Why not just fix and improve upon what is already there. Get the fountains working again. Set up some kiosks. Take some pride in keeping it clean and inviting. Hold more public events there. Add some beaconing lighting like Cincy did with Fountain Square. But we should focus on building up more around the square before investing a large chunk of cash in a total reconfiguration.
  23. I disagree, they should sell whatever their customers are requesting, which most likely will be the residents at 668, that can make a profit. If they want lottery tickets and booze then so be it, if they want tofu and organic milk so be it. The propritor should be able to choose his wares that will result in a profit for his venture. Leather seats and MP3 players will be added options for the handbasket we are all riding to hell in. Bubblewrap clothes so kids can play outside. All interscholastic sports will be played on xbox live. Gaydar

Cavs have jumped to the top of ESPN's power rankings. All of them (Stein, Hollinger, fans)
