Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I got the impression he was there at Shaq's invite. Although it might have been LBJ considering that he did do a guest spot on the season finale.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
How L.A. of them. We don't have enough businesses that allow you to bring a pet in (outside of pet stores) like what I saw in SoCal where the dogs went everywhere.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
I have to disagree. The train station would have been on a lower elevation. If you look at the picture, the concept was to extend the mall over the RR tracks... sort of like what some have envisioned for NCTC. So... the train station would have not blocked any view from Lakeside that CBS does now and old Municipal Stadium did back in the day (maybe even less)

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
That building depicted is not on Mall C (which is sandwiched between City Hall and the Courthouse). It appears to be on the land where the shoreway was constructed.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
Jeremy Piven was at the game last night. Front row seat right next to the Cavs' bench. Shaq threw him over his shoulder and carried him onto the court during warmups.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
That's my knee jerk reaction to this. Leverage is what they are looking for IMO. I just can't see the MM on Mall C. It seems like the most used Mall by downtown workers for lunch, etc. Can you imagine a modern glass structure crammed between City hall and the old courthouse? Isn't there some restriction on building on top of the downtown Malls anyway?

Cuyahoga County: County Government Reform News & Discussion
The way I viewed Issue 6 was a better system of checks and balances for the County. The 3 commissioners simply had too much unchecked power/discretion.

People your city loves to hate.
Art Modell and nobody is even close in second place. However, if the NY Media has its way in the summer of 2010 (highly doubt it)... Lebron could rival Modell's status 'round here.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
I walked by that party tonight. Lots of white collars and crowded. Melting ice sculpture of the "RJ" logo in the front window was a nice touch. Looks very upscale.

When it comes to lakefront development, I can't find them anywhere around these parts.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
That's my concern. The jagged/boxy townhome look is in style right now... but I don't see it as being timeless like a brownstone or victorian. That being said, I can understand if it is being done that way for efficiency/green purposes. And I am not against vibrant colors as I love the "loud" (some even call obnoxious) look in some of the more eclectic neighborhoods in THE Heights. It is not the colors that throw me off on these homes, it is the architectural design and material being used.

^Mapquest tells me that Cleveland to Akron is 39 miles and Cincy to Dayton is 49 miles.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
While I certainly agree with your general sentiments and "realty slap", I do think the 30 (more likely 50) year plan is TOO long. If I had my druthers, the port would move tomorrow and the land would be available to let the chips fall as they may. Who knows what kind of momentum would build up... plus, one thing I think people forget is that the port move is not only intended to allow lakefront development downtown but also make the port more efficient/useful/profitable/etc.

Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway: Battery Park
Sorry BP residents... but I throw up in my mouth a little bit everytime I see those townhomes. Granted, I bet they are bee-a-ute-iful on the inside.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Abington? Cornell is next to the cancer hospital. Anyways, it would go on the surface lot that is behind the University East building (quizno's, chopstick) OK. I was just going off McCleveland's post that it would go on the site of the old Hearing and Speech building - which is on Euclid and Abington on a parcel immediately to the west of and abutting the the new cancer hospital.

Euclid and Abington it is. Right next to the new cancer hospital. Nice.

Where in UC is the other hotel going to be built? Or is it another renovation?

I wonder why the top 100 list combines Cleveland with Akron for 3.2 mill, but not Cincy with Dayton which would have been 2.9 mill? I would think that Dayton is as connected to Cincy as Akron is to Cleveland... and both are about equidistant from their bigger counterparts, no?

Cleveland: Random Development and News
^^I would think that both Mall C and B will have to be "reconstructed" for the new CC. How else do they raise the ceilings?... especially once the old support pillars are removed. Good list freethink. One big development not on your list that I have hopes of being in full swing within that time frame is UpTown in UC. IMHO, UpTown has more "potential" for immediate success than any other large scale project being discussed.

^They are "apples to oranges" as much as the gender and racial equality movements were apples to oranges. The same considerations of equal protection and due process apply.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Or a few million instances, depending on your view of personal drug use. But anyway, I agree that this probably doesn't have much to do with prison overcrowding. I have no idea how this relates to hate crime legislation though. And I disagree this has to do with naive expectations for rehabilitation. This stuff is hard because, for pretty good reasons, we generally don't imprison people for crimes they haven't committed. There are exceptions, of course, and I'm guessing those exceptions will continue to expand in response to horrible cases like this. Agreed on the nonviolent drug crimes, certainly it's much more sensible to let those offenders out and keep the violent ones locked up. As for "hate crimes", it's true that topic relates to the Sowell case only indirectly (would he be treated differently as a white man killing black women?). It's a sore subject for those of us on the right because we think it allows the left to have their cake and eat it too. Considering the exact same crime to be worse for strictly political reasons is IMO dangerous. It contaminates the justice system. You do realize that hate crimes work both ways, right? You don't have to be white to be guilty of one. You also must realize that hate crimes have an intent element or mens rea not present in non-hate crimes. Let me try to explain. Beating someone up for their money or b/c you are an a&&hole is not the "exact same crime" as beating someone up because of their race/gender/religion/ethnicity/sex orientation/etc. The intent is different and the impact on the victim is totally different. Essentially what you are saying is that all homicides and other broad categories of crimes should be grouped together for purposes of sentencing (regardless of intent). In other words, a man who kills in the heat of passion is the same as a man who carefully plans and commits a murder. Thankfully, our laws are not so simple minded.
