  1. I think those who opposed and are critical of the addition of a downtown casino greatly underestimate the amount of NEO surbaban residents who will be making their first trip downtown in years after this casino is built and at full operation.

Anyone have any stats on the typical construction costs for non-Vegas casinos? E.g., the casinos in Detroit, Niagra, NoLa, etc.
  3. I too had hopes of the front entrance of the casino directly to the south of The Avenue at TC. However, the more and more I think about the wedge at the southern corner of Huron/Ontario, the more I like that concept.
  4. Is that 1030 Euclid Ave.? If so, check page 91 of the Random Cleveland Developments Thread.

It is insulting that you would not equate the two.... especially since you were alive when Loving v. Virginia was hanging in the balance. Like it or not, the Gay Rights movement is THE civil rights movement of our time. And, like it or not, it WILL eventually succeed.

Jeez, you guys in Cleveland LOVE the hell out of Dan Gilbert. "Dan Gilbert cares about Cleveland!" "He's going to save our city!" "Oh, and he died for our sins!". Alright I'm exaggerating but I still stand by my assertion that you guys just like him a little too much. He's just in it for the money. His rock star status is kind of weird to me. Trust me, Dan Gilbert is not a 'rock star' to everyone in Cleveland. I heard quite a few 'snake in the grass' comments the past couple days. He certainly caught a lot of flack from this board when he backed the Tower City location for the Medical Mart. But in this instance, he said all the right things. Seriously, an UrbanOhio appointed committee probably would have reached the exact same conclusions he did on the overall vision for the Casino. He is obligated to invest $250-300 million on the new casino development.... he has promised to invest double that amount. He is working with local businesses to bring a model that works/flows with, not against, the rest of downtown. I don't know how many times I heard the phrase "woven into the urban fabric of the City's core" when he was talking about his vision... You can add all that to the fact that he is the very popular owner of our only 'functional' pro sports team and that he has already brought new jobs to the City through his other endeavors. The money he has invested in the Cavs' roster and in improvements at the Q is quite impressive in this economy... regardless of locale. All in all, I would say his popularity, if not rock star status, is well deserved.

Well.... gay marriage opponents won again at the ballot box. This time in Maine. I believe that brings the streak to 31. The loss has to be disheartening for proponents of gay marriage who were looking for their first election day victory and were cautiously optimistic for a favorable vote in the very liberal Northeast. As someone who recognizes the true purpose of having a constitution, I find the successes of these social conservative groups very upsetting. The Maine legislator passed a statute through our representative form of government... the mob struck it down. The California Supreme Court interpreted the state's constitution to guarantee a right to marry... the mob changed the constitution. In Ohio, the mob preempted any court or legislative action by amending our constitution to create a negative right in that document of freedom. If anybody ever is wondering why we need a strong Federal Government and Judiciary, these exercises of 'true democracy' trumping our notion of a 'constitutional republic' couldn't spell it out much better. Question - what would have happened in the 1950's if the masses were given the chance to vote on the issues at the center of the Civil Rights Movement?

I voted for Issue 3 and am onboard with Gilbert's plans. Hearing him speak about his vision for the Cleveland casino was like music to my ears. It was almost like he was reading the Magna Carta of UrbanOhio everytime he campaigned. I really hope that he keeps all of his campaign promises because I probably would have voted against Issue 3 without them. The thing that swayed me the most is when I heard him acknowledge that a vibrant downtown is key to the casino's success, not vice-versa. Thus, as he promised, every decision he makes relative to siting, design, concept, etc. will take into account what is best for the city's core first, way before immediate return on investment.

Jail time unlikely. Precedent points to a 7 game suspension from the league though if convicted.
  12. Not at the very top of my list, but I am surprised no one has nominated Magnolia in UC. South Park Blvd in THE Hts and the bit of Lakeshore Blvd running through Bratenahl deserve some praise as well for their glamour. While maybe deserving of a new thread, I will also like to nominate Chagrin Blvd as the absolute WORST street in Ohio. If you made an entire City out of Chagrin Blvd, you would have Charlotte.
  13. To my understanding and while the Fed gov't does pay the vets, it is common practice for the states to supplement the $ to their vets and Ohio is near the bottom (I think 2nd worst) in terms of financial support.
  14. ^There is no need for 14th to be 4 lanes wide. I assume they will knock it down to 2.

That might be my problem. Most of the time, I am within the sphere they give me, but not everytime. For instance, I was in Collinwood this weekend and it was telling me that I was somewhere between ChinaTown and Ohio City. How do I change it so it isn't just looking for the nearest tower.

That is what my G1 operates on. I have no complaints, but have never owned an iphone so I can't compare. But it seems like there are more free apps and, unlike the iphone, you can change your screen saver. the Iphones app store is hard to beat at the moment. You can change you screen on an iphone or do you mean change it to a personalized screen saver and not the pre loaded items. Personalized is what I meant. I thought you couldn't do that on the iPhone. As for the apps, the Android Marketplace can hold its own from what I have seen. The one thing that dissappoints me with the G! is its "my location" feature on GoogleMaps. Its accuracy leaves something to be desired.
  19. AKA Superior! LOL ...AKA Euclid, AKA Cleveland Memorial Shoreway, AKA Clifton Blvd, AKA Lake Road. I chose it for its versatility :)

Home rule only applies when dealing with a conflicting statute. Issue 3 is a constitutional amendment. The home rule municipalities do not have the ability/power/authority to trump the state constitution.

I have T-Mobile service so iphone is not possible for me. For the past couple years, I have been a faithful Blackberry guy. But my wife just recently got me a G1 and I really like it. I still have my bb, but the G1 is definitely better for entertainment/media/sharing/etc. It is T-Mobile's (with a little help from Google) response to the iphone. Edit: I know I am a year late on this breakthrough, but then again, I have never been on the cutting edge of technology.
